Breastfeeding pods now trending at sports stadiums

A new trend is giving a break to breastfeeding sports fans. Lactation stations have started popping up in sports spaces: basketball arenas and baseball and football stadiums. Unlike bathroom stalls, lactation stations give moms a quiet and sanitary place to nurse their children—which most moms didn’t have just two decades ago. In 1999, Americans were almost evenly divided on whether they felt breastfeeding mothers should do so in public or private, with nearly a third neither agreeing nor disagreeing. Today, over half of Americans say they feel comfortable with mothers breastfeeding near them—yet many public places aren’t the most sanitary....

That Time When Teens Eating Tide Pods Didn’t Seem Like Such a Bad Idea After All

Today’s Campaign Update (Because The Campaign Never Ends) Oh, darn. And he’s such a nice, nice man. – Bloomberg reports that poor, poor Mark Zuckerberg is feeling “isolated” these days. He’s feeling under siege, you know, because those mean ol’ people in the fake news media are mounting the fakest of all fake scandals against his company, all because he shared 50 million customers’ data – you know, the Facebook business model – with a company that did work for the (gasp!) evil Donald Trump campaign! Hey, everybody, let’s all take a moment to feel so, so sorry for Mark...

The last joke is Tide Pods

The idea of ingesting a Tide Pod used to be a little bit funny. For example, when The New York Daily News printed a comment from Senator Chuck Schumer under a rudely ageist headline in September 2012. He had recently been informed that 40 children in New York City had eaten Tide Pods and received medical attention for eating Tide Pods in the preceding five months. And he said, mostly unprovoked, “I saw one on my staffer’s desk and I wanted to eat it.” It’s good in print and it’s better out loud. “I saw one on my staffer’s desk...

'Hot coil challenge' newest, dangerous fad (like Tide Pods were not bad enough)

It's dangerous and downright dumb. Social media’s latest online challenge is heating up in what’s being called The Hot Coil Challenge. Those foolish enough to participate press their bare skin to the red hot coils on a stovetop, suffering severe burns as a result. And then, of course, they post the proof to YouTube. “I hope that my kids are smart enough to know that that’s not a great choice. Even if someone dared them I would hope that they would choose not to do that,” mom Jennifer Harding said.

N.Y. Lawmakers Want to Make Tide Pods Look Less Edible

New York state lawmakers want Tide to stop making its pods look so appealing. Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas and Sen. Brad Hoylman proposed a bill Tuesday that would require Proctor & Gamble to individually wrap each pod and add warning labels to them, reports NBC New York. The lawmakers also want the pods to be made less colorful, claiming that their bright colors “can make them appealing to young children, adults with dementia, and those looking to take part in the internet trend known as ‘Tide Pod Challenge.’ That said, don’t expect a change anytime soon. Proctor & Gamble responded to...

Two state lawmakers this week wrote to the CEO of Proctor & Gamble urging the company to repackage their Tide Pods product to be child resistant and have clear warning labels about ingesting the detergent. “While our legislation would only protect New Yorkers, we urge Procter & Gamble and all manufacturers of colorful detergent pods to offer the same protections to the nation and immediately commit to the precautions set forth in our legislation,” wrote the lawmakers, Sen. Brad Hoylman and Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas. “It’s time that you recognized the danger to those least able to protect themselves from a...

There were 10,570 injuries related to the consumption of laundry packs in 2017.Tide Pods have been making a lot of headlines lately—but not for their stain-cleaning power. Instead, the product has gained notoriety for the so-called “Tide Pod Challenge,” a disturbing phenomenon in which people film themselves eating the laundry detergent-filled packets. Needless to say, consuming the pods is not recommended, and eating them can cause a variety of health problems. Some companies, including several bakeries, have had fun with the strange fad, making donuts that resemble the colorful detergent pods. But not everyone thinks a lighthearted approach to the...

Climate change is a sprawling, complex problem. But there is an astonishingly simple way to make a difference: plant more trees. Trees scrub pollution from the air, reduce erosion, improve water quality, provide homes for animals and insects, and enhance our lives in countless other ways. It turns out that ecosystem restoration is also an emerging business opportunity. A new report from the World Resources Institute and the Nature Conservancy says governments around the world have committed to reviving nearly 400 million acres of wilderness — an area larger than South Africa. As countries push to regrow forests, startups are dreaming up...

A Wichita donut chain used the latest social media stunt, called the Tide Pod challenge, to promote a new kind of donut Wednesday. Hurts Donut joined in on the craze by selling the donut version of the laundry capsule. news-app-download-apple-350x50news-app-d “We just kind of put out the post as just a funny alternative to a more serious topic,” said Trista Patterson, owner of Hurts Donut. “We see so much heavy stuff every day that we’re just putting a little lighter approach...

If you've ever shopped with a significant other, you know the feeling of so-not-wanting-to-be-there that can be equated with some sort of legal torture. And let's be honest, it goes both ways — sometimes there's nothing worse than a partner nagging about how tired, hungry or bored they are when you're trying to get your retail therapy on. It's not an uncommon desire to wish your beau could just be temporarily locked in a box somewhere while you do your thing, as long as they're entertained with something. Looks like China's way ahead of us on this one.....

Photo credit: US Army via Military Times The Pentagon is realizing that fighting in the frigid north may be more of a possibility than ever as Russia prepares its forces for sustained arctic operations. Now a handful of the US Army’s attack helicopters are getting optimized for this scenario, receiving skis, a pilot survival pod and being tested to see how they adapt to the extreme environment. The Apache’s permanent presence in Alaska is still a relatively new development. It came about as the result of the Army’s aviation reorganization plan that saw the sudden (and some would say boneheaded)...

Nap Pods to the People!

DozeSF, the San Francisco nap pod startup, is moving one step closer to bringing pod napping to the people. In case you missed it, a few weeks ago, SF Weekly took a field trip to this tiny new business that aims to offer a tech company amenity — to wit, 25 minute naps in $11,000 napping pods — to the masses. We enjoyed our sojourns in the vibrating Metropods, but we worried that, at $20 a visit, DozeSF would be out of the price range of the average working schmoes that owner Brandon Smith says he wants to help with...

In 2012 and 2013, researchers conducted a two-year nationwide study that reviewed more than 17,000 incidents, all involving a children exposed to the colorful capsules that resulted in harm. In 2015, a little over 6,000 cases were reported and the year isn’t over yet. In many of the reports, children thought they were unwrapping a piece of candy. Local pediatrician...
