Here is a follow-up piece to the article that generated quite a bit of discussion over the last few days. Bishop Loverde has proceeded to suspend Fr. Haley, the priest who had uncovered sexual and financial corruption in 3 consecutive parishes to which he was assigned.

It is noteworthy that Loverde took this action "to remove Father Haley permanently without any judicial proceeding within the church." Being heterosexual and honest is now such a crime that the accused are not even allowed normal procedures.

On the same day that the bishops are voting down the "one strike" policy, Loverde is instituting a "one strike" policy of his own for any priests who dare to speak out against the corruption in his diocese, even when they are obeying a court-ordered subpoena.

The head guy in Rome can't bring himself to do anything against any bishop who obstructs justice, covers up crimes, intimidates victims and transfers pederasts, the conservative RCs on this board whimper and wring their hands for relief and divine guidance from the same hierarchy which they are cowed by and submissive to, the hierarchs whimper that they have to safeguard the "rights" of priests, complete with due process and statutes of limitation, and some dioceses pay hundreds of thousands to priests who are relieved from their duties because of molestation. Meanwhile, they can hammer a guy who dares to speak the truth in very short order.

Y'all have been sold a bill of goods.

Here's an article from the Washington Post which tells the whole story of the situation in Manassas, where Fr. Haley was Asst Pastor and was called to testify in the trial:

A smart detective would begin to inpect the past of a "child molester protector" very closely.

He is not acting to "avoid scandal, to maintain ecclesiastical discipline and to protect the reputation and privacy of both the faithful and priests of this diocese." What he is doing will not achieve those goals.

What he is really doing is protecting criminals. BETTER CHECK THIS GUY OUT REAL CLOSELY.

The priest/penitent does not apply to the bishop's relation to the priests under his jurisdiction. I say investigate this guy for obstruction of justice AT LEAST.

Bishop Paul S. Loverde informed the Rev. James R. Haley in an Oct. 28 formal notice that he is being removed for violating a gag order a year ago, which barred him from disclosing wrongdoing by priests in order "to avoid scandal, to maintain ecclesiastical discipline and to protect the reputation and privacy of both the faithful and priests of this diocese." The action prompted a national Catholic watchdog group to call for a local investigation of the bishop for intimidation of a witness in a civil proceeding.

If he's really being removed because he testified against an abusive priest, Bishop Loverde may require a Freeping.

"[The] public availability of extremely scandalous and defamatory material in his deposition warrants immediate action."

If only they were as tough on abusive and homosexual priests as they are on whistle-blowers...

The bishop said he had consulted with experts in canon law and "the field of psychology, and have also sought fraternal advice from other diocesan bishops" before taking the step to remove Father Haley permanently without any judicial proceeding within the church.

Uh oh. "Psychologists"? There's a giant red flag... I wonder what other diocesan bishops he consulted? Mahoney? Law? McCormick? Hubbard? Clark?

This stinks to high heaven. I hope Catholics in the Arlington diocese are ready to put some heat on Bishop Loverde. Sounds like he needs it.

I read the whole thing - it's pretty sickening.

What a pathetic bunch of goons are our bishops! Have they totally forgotten about their roles as successors of the apostles? They do anything to cover up clerical child abuse and sexual misconduct and breach of vows by priests, and then this bishop throws the book at a good faith whistleblower on clerical misconduct. Holy Spirit, please come quickly! We need you!

Here are a few rhetorical questions and comments presented only to let me vent.

Why didn't they tell me in RCIA that the U.S. Roman Catholic Bishops are mostly a bunch of miscreant jackals?

Why do the jackals (Bishops) insist on hiding their actions from the light of day? What are they hiding? They must be hiding something.

What's wrong with the Roman Catholic culture that it spews forth such arrogant, un-Godly sissy-boy "leaders"? There don't appear to be more than a handful of real men in the U.S. bishoprics. I thought only men could be Priest's and Bishops.

99%+ of Catholic theology is beautiful and sound, but it sure looks to me that over the last 2,000 years there has been more than a little injection of "doctrine" designed solely to protect the power of the old-boys network also know as the "Catholic hierarchy". To think otherwise, one would have to be incredibly naive. I believe that the Holy Spirit does guide the Roman Catholic Church, but I now also believe that Satan guides many of the "men" who are supposed to lead it.

Did the bishop expect him to disobey a legal subpeona? This is hardly the confidentiality of the confessional here. Very odd, this.

This is truly sad. Is there some way we can show support for Father Haley?

Another update from RCF:

Webservant’s Note: This announcement will also be sent to the RCF General Email List. Please accept our apologies if you receive a duplicate]

Dear Supporters of Father Haley,

We’d like to thank all of the folks who have signed up since our last email. Our list is growing quickly, and we ask that you get as many people as possible to join in this effort.

As a priest-advisor to RCF mentioned recently, the action that Bishop Loverde is attempting to take on Father Haley is probably one of the most pivotal decisions coming up in the American Catholic Hierarchy. He said this because if Bishop Loverde is successful in removing Fr. Haley’s faculties, ANY bishop could do take similar unwarranted actions against other faithful priests. And, in all likelihood, he will get away with it.

The faithful must take a stand and support this good and holy priest. Even if you do not know Fr. Haley, perhaps you know another good priest. If you don’t take a stand for what is right, his head may be on the next chopping block.

On Monday, December 2, at 10:00 a.m., Fr. Haley has been ordered to appear in the chancery offices of the Arlington Diocese "to inspect the acts of the case" against him for providing evidence in the adultery case of the Rev. James A. Verrecchia and Nancy Lambert. The bishop decreed in an Oct. 28 notice that Father Haley was to be permanently suspended.

The bishop plans to remove Father Haley permanently without any judicial proceeding within the church.

When Fr. Haley arrives, he needs to see a sea of supporting faces and hear their voices. RCF is organizing a strong, vocal appearance in support of Fr. Haley. Even if the Bishop finds out about our plans and changes the location or time of the meeting, we will be present at 9 a.m. on December 2 to make our statement.

I will personally travel to Arlington on Sunday, December 1, to show RCF’s support and to lead a number of activities aimed at solidifying the support base in the Arlington area.

We need assistance from you and from any folks in the area who may be able to help with the following:

- recommend a good nearby site for a meeting. We may conduct a pre-protest organizational meeting on Sunday evening and perhaps a larger one Monday evening.
- How many of you can attend either or both meetings? How many people can you contact who will be able to attend? We need a rough head count.
- We will need help with making arrangements.
- We need a general outlay description of the chancery offices. In what kind of area are they located? Are they on a busy street, major highway, a quiet street, how far back from the main road is the office? Etc. We need a good description of the lay of the land. Where is the Bishop’s office located in the complex? We want our voices to be heard loud and clear when the meeting is taking place.
- We need folks who can help to arrange advance advertising for our activities. We need financial assistance to cover the cost of the ads, and we need local folks who can interface with the local media to follow up on the ads and related details.
- We need each and every one of you to get the word out and get warm bodies to be present and vocal. We need to let Fr. Haley know that he is not suffering alone. We need to let Bishop Loverde know that he is being watched and that he will not be able to hide.

Please respond with any ideas and specific activities you can help with by emailing Arlington@rcf.org as soon as possible. We will continue to keep you apprised as plans develop.

If Bishop Loverde is successful in his efforts, Father Haley will lose his home and will have no income as of December 2. If you would like to donate funds to assist him, you may do so through RCF. ALL PROCEEDS WILL GO DIRECTLY TO FATHER HALEY. Unless you request to the contrary, your name and the amount you donated will be included with your donation. (If you wish to remain anonymous, please note that in the "comments" section of your checkout form). You can find a donation box on RCF’s home page, www.rcf.org.

Thank you for your help and support.

Stephen G. Brady

President
Roman Catholic Faithful, Inc.
