Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. - John Adams |
I have been drawn, somehow, into thinking perhaps that the unidentified other disciple in John. Whom Jesus loved, who leaned against his breast at the Last Seder, who ran faster than Peter to get to the empty tomb, of whom Jesus said " If I will that he tarry till I come, what [is that] to thee?" was You. Or me. Or any disciple of the word. The nameless disciple is an invitation to step into the Gospel, to be there.
If you could be anyone, wouldn't you want to be him?
And it is interesting to me that the very last earthly accomplishment of Jesus was to say to that very disciple "Behold thy mother!"
I think that it's pretty clear that the unamed disciple John is speaking of is himself, ... John.
"I would tend to think that ... yes, JESUS wouldn't want to do anything to encourage this."
Scripture?Luke 11:27 And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed [is] the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked.
Luke 11:28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed [are] they that hear the word of God, and keep it.
Matthew 12:46 While he yet talked to the people, behold, [his] mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him.
Matthew 12:47 Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee.
Matthew 12:48 But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren?
Matthew 12:49 And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!
Matthew 12:50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.
I won't be around to see it. :-)
Could that explain why there doesn't seem to be even one time that Jesus demands a book be written?
Not that he holds any animosity toward the Bible, because it certainly doesn't demand the position it was put in, but it seems Jesus went out of his way not to encourage it, and that there would be nothing that could be pointed to later, saying He promoted it?
So do you believe Jesus already knew the future, and how many of the Protestants would put a book on the same level as Him, and some would prefer simply reading about Him over actually worshiping Him, and their leaders would be petitioned to equate reading about Him to actually knowing Him?

10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,
11 Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.
John 1 verse 1. He is the book
There you go again with this "any" business. With certain of you guys, it's all or none. Everything's digital, on or off. Either He elevates her above all mankind, or he shows no affection for her. Either she's to be venerated, or we loathe her.
"Who is my mother and who are my brothers" ought to put a damper on any thought of exalting His blood relatives over, say, the apostles for instance. That is, of course, unless one has the RCC Magic Decoder Ring to put that stuff in the "proper" perspective.
You might consider that some of us differentiate between "unscriptural" and "anti-scriptural."
That's cute AlguyA, and good to see your reading the post.
While finishing up Ephesians this morning, and reading about the full armor of God, that Christians need to put on, I hadn't noticed 6:17 before, or at least in the same light as today.
Eph 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
The word of God is only found in the word of God, and the sword (weapon)of the Holy Spirit, is the word, and with out that word, we have no defense, and no full suit of armor.

Please note the Scripture you cite pertains only to the vision in Revelation and is directed only to the specified seven churchs. Certainly, nowhere does He demand the Gospels be written nor does He suggest the letters from Paul, Peter, etc. be gathered into a book.
Yes ... but it does present an example of JESUS commanding such a methodology.
When looked at, in light of God commands to write in the Old Testament, plus a few others I neglected to mentioned from the New Testament, a very compelling case can be made for the written Word of God.God commands to write ...Frankly, the argument God favors Mary receives far greater Scriptural support(see Luke) than does your cite from Revelations provide support for the creation of the canon.
