Grudging Admission: „Many African Bishops Want To Restore Mass In Latin”

Some Africans are being kept in the "old form of Catholicism", Father Stan Chu Ilo, associate professor at Depaul University in Chicago, told AlJazeera.com (1 February).

The "old form of Catholicism" includes Scripture, Christ and the apostles, but not Luther, Calvin and Vatican II.

"There are many African bishops who are very comfortable celebrating Mass in Latin. They want to restore some imaginary past glory of Catholicism in Africa," laments Chu Ilo.

He admits, however, that many young people are leaving the Novus Ordo churches and joining Protestant sects - because Protestantism in its original form tastes better than the Protestant imitation that the pastoral council has concocted.

Why would I want to go to church and learn a lesson in some language I don’t speak?

It’s one of the three languages seen in written form on the cross of Christ.

imaginary past glory of Catholicism in Africa

??!!

There is nothing "imaginary" about the greatness of Catholicism in Africa. From the Scillitan Martyrs (180 AD) through St. Charles Lwanga (1886) to the martyrs today in Nigeria and Sudan, there was a past glory that still continues to this day despite the desolation created by Islam and others.

How about worship God in a way that is evidentally geared to the transcendent first, and then with a heart well disposed, open one’s mind to what He wants to say?

some worship in Latin because it removes oneself from the world of men and opens the mind to the Divine...people have done so for at least 1500 years

Why wouldn't you? Too lazy to pick up a Latin-English missal, perhaps?

The left frantically strives to erase the past in the hope that none will (be permitted to) remember a time better than the dismal hell they intend to create.

You might not get it, but it’s simple enough that even Carl Spackler understands.

Bill Murray Misses the Latin Mass...

“I think we lost something by losing the Latin. Now if you go to a Catholic mass even just in Harlem it can be in Spanish, it can be in Ethiopian, it can be in any number of languages. The shape of it, the pictures, are the same but the words aren’t the same.”
Isn’t it good for people to understand it? “I guess,” he says, shaking his head. “But there’s a vibration to those words. If you’ve been in the business long enough you know what they mean anyway. And I really miss the music – the power of it, y’know? Yikes! Sacred music has an affect on your brain.” Instead, he says, we get “folk songs … top 40 stuff … oh, brother….”

Latin mass is speaking in tongues.

Why would anyone give a sermon in a language that almost everybody hearing can’t understand the language?

That’s exactly what the bible says about preaching in tongues.

I’m not Catholic but watch Father Brown and like to hear him occasionally speak in Latin.

Smart Bishops.

Vatican II did so much to harm the Church. And getting rid of the Latin Rite was one of the most damaging. IMHO.

The sermons are always in the vernacular.

Any other stupid questions?

The Bible gives rules for speaking in tongues.

Check 1 Corinthians 14:27-28. There must be an interpreter present “If anyone speaks in a tongue let there be two or three at the most, each in turn and let one interpret, if there is no interpreter let him keep silent in the Church and let him speak to himself and to God,” as verse 4 states “one who speaks in a tongue edifies himself.”

Notice, there is order as each speaks in turn. There must be a known interpreter present if you are to speak it out loud. If no interpreter is present then you are to speak to yourself and keep silent in the Church or pray that you may interpret.

“Why would I want to go to church and learn a lesson in some language I don’t speak?”

The lesson would be in humility, beauty and tradition - not in language in itself.
