Where does any lay Catholic get the right to pass judgment on the duly elected leadership of their church?

Your college of cardinals elected him according to standard protocol. He’s your pope, like it or not.

And as such, must be obeyed by the faithful.

Conservatives and traditionalists have been wary of Francis ever since he emerged on the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica after his 2013 election without the red velvet cape of his predecessors.

I guess you missed all the early FR threads where non-Catholic FReepers were warning the Catholic nones about him and all we got was castigated for it.

We were labeled as anti-Catholics, haters, bigots, whatever. FRomans defended him claiming that he was misquoted, mistranslated, misunderstood, taken out of context, or any other excuse they could find to defend him.

It took a couple years for them to see the light, but they finally did and now have turned on him, although under what authority they are permitted to do this is still unclear.

That would make him, at the moment, the best candidate for the False Prophet.

“..That would make him, at the moment, the best candidate for the False Prophet....’

Whatever it is, it’s of the devil.
There is NOTHING of Christ in this creature.

Catholic church history tells a different story.

Unum Sanctum
https://www.papalencyclicals.net/bon08/b8unam.htm

“ This authority, however, (though it has been given to man and is exercised by man), is not human but rather divine, granted to Peter by a divine word and reaffirmed to him (Peter) and his successors by the One Whom Peter confessed, the Lord saying to Peter himself, ‘Whatsoever you shall bind on earth, shall be bound also in Heaven‘ etc., [Mt 16:19]. Therefore whoever resists this power thus ordained by God, resists the ordinance of God [Rom 13:2], unless he invent like Manicheus two beginnings, which is false and judged by us heretical, since according to the testimony of Moses, it is not in the beginnings but in the beginning that God created heaven and earth [Gen 1:1]. Furthermore, we declare, we proclaim, we define that it is absolutely necessary for salvation that every human creature be subject to the Roman Pontiff.”

Your church.

Your duly elected pope to submit to like it or not.

No, he’s not “my” pope.

And as for “must be obeyed”, that’s not going to happen either.

This isn’t the Middle Ages.

“..we define that it is absolutely necessary for salvation that every human creature be subject to the Roman Pontiff...”

They (human men) can “define” all they want.
I’ll take Acts 2:37-38 for $500, Alex.

Is there somewhere in Catholic teaching where the laity is given the option of sitting in judgment of their church leadership and deciding for themselves whether it’s of God or not and if they have to obey it or not?

Catholics are obliged to follow only on matters of Faith and Christ’s teachings that have been passed down to us by the apostles and their successors.

Obviously, we do not control the thoughts or actions of individuals that stray from Christ like Luther, Calvin, German Bishops (Cardinal Marx), Fr Martin (Jesuit) et al.

CCC 2470 The disciple of Christ consents to “live in the truth,” that is the simplicity of a life inconformity with the Lord’s example, abiding in His Truth. “if we say we have fellowship with Him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not live according to the truth.”

We respect the office of the Pope and understand that Francis may be holy and a sinner and we pray that our Pope will lead all to Christ and eternal life with God.

Non-Catholics are often castigated for YOPIOS- You Own Personal Interpretation of Scripture.

But Catholics allow themselves their own personal interpretation of the catechism of the Catholic church. We can label it as YOPIOCCC.

1.2 billion different interpretations of Catholic teaching. Each on his own little pope deciding for himself what he wants to accept and follow and what he doesn’t.

I guess the absolute authority, or any authority for that matter, of the Vatican doesn’t mean much any more.

Your comments indicate a lack of knowledge about the Catholic Faith. Perhaps one should study and understand the teachings of the Catholic Faith before posting false personal opinions.

Obviously, any interpretation we arrive at must not contradict what has already been defined as Catholic truth. That is why God gave the Church the power of defining things; to keep us from going wrong. We must be willing to submit our interpretations to the judgment of the magisterium.

There is no conflict between the work of exegetes, scholars, and believers in exploring the meaning of Scripture on the one hand, and the work of the magisterium in authentically defining the meaning of Scripture on the other hand.

Exegetes and believers must not pit their private judgment against the mind of the Church, or treat their methods as the ultimate arbiters of what Scripture can or cannot mean (this is what is meant by “private interpretation“). But that doesn’t mean that ordinary Catholics and Scripture scholars cannot use their intellects to probe the meaning of Scripture.
