Another large-scale mosaic of a seraphim has been uncovered on the ceiling of Agia Sophia in Istanbul.
The 6-winged angel of God was revealed when scaffolding set up 7 years ago to assist in restoration was finally dismantled, reports the Orthodoxia News Agency.
Another of the four mosaics was uncovered in 2009. It had been hidden under plaster and metal for 160 years. The last person to see the mosaic was Ottoman Sultan Abdülmecid and Swiss architects Guiseppe and Gaspare Fossati, who directed renovations at Agia Sophia from 1847 to 1849.

Ping
Erdogan is ordering the painters in . . .
Actually it’s pretty easy to see why it was covered up in the first place.
It looks....furry...
If you had six wings you’d look furry too!.............
Ping!
Not long ago, I saw the weirdest sight I’d ever seen in the sky: a headless creature with six undulating limbs slowly floated across my field of vision. As it started to wheel and turn towards me, it began to break apart! Once the mass separated, it became obvious: three turkey vultures with their heads down and flying close together were riding the thermals over a big parking lot. When I first saw them, my view was side-on to them.
There are four of these on the dome of Hagia Sophia. Most of them were visible when I was there in 2013. Maybe one was hidden by the scaffolding.
These are not new!
It’s a fine line between furry and fluffy. I’m thinking feathers/wings gets you fluffy. But I’m no theologian.

Thx, will ping later.
Thanks a fool in paradise.
I guess you've yet to stumble across one of these...
Birds everywhere, racing for guns and ammo...
That’s hilarious! No, not yet! Now that I know ond exists, I’ll be on the lookout!
I remember Hagia Sophia from 1954. I was a tad but I remember it. There was some scaffolding and restoration work then, too.Istanbul was a much friendlier place for Americans then.
A piece of classical era western art showing human like forms is likely to be destroyed by the growing conservative Mulim sentiment in Turkey.
Remberber the Bhuddas of Bamiyan!
