Lawsuit Calls for POW Bible to be Removed from VA Hospital Display

Manchester, N.H., May 8, 2019 / 08:00 pm (CNA).- A Bible once carried by a World War II prisoner of war is the center of a legal fight at a veterans’ medical center in New Hampshire.

The Bible was part of a “Missing Man” table display, honoring prisoners of war and missing soldiers, placed at the entrance of the Manchester Veterans’ Administration Medical Center. The bible was donated to the medical center by a 95 year old veteran and former POW to whom it belonged. The veteran had the Bible while he was a prisoner of war.

A federal lawsuit now argues that the Bible should be removed from display, because it violates the First Amendment by appearing to favor one religion over another.

The suit was filed by U.S. Air Force veteran James Chamberlain, a Christian, after months of back and forth between a group of veterans and the staff of the Manchester Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center over the Bible. According to the New Hampshire Union Leader, 14 veterans and patients of the medical center filed complaints against the Bible with the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) in January of this year. These veterans were of varying religions; they were Protestant, Catholic, atheist, agnostic and of other religions, the Union Leader reported.

That is my view as well.

It (the veteran’s Bible) has a provenance and that history ties it explicitly to the POW experience being addressed in the display. The “cure” for this lawsuit is not it’s removal but rather in obtaining and incorporating items from other religions that were actually used by POWs - with a preference being shown toward WW II items.

Somehow, I suspect even a multi-religious display would still be offensive. The real objective is removing all mention of religion and fomenting the pretense that religious faith plays no significant role in sustaining many POWs during their captivity and (usual) mistreatment.

Honoring a US soldier who was a prisoner of war in one of the most despotic military prison systems in modern history is not controversial. Nor is acknowledging his personal struggle and the source of strength he derived from is faith. Is Disney the only reality we can permit?

Military Religious Freedom Foundation? Correction: Military Religious Hatred Foundation. And those trying to get rid of the bible who are conveniently called protestants and Catholics are liars. BTW, atheism and agnosticism are not religions.

James Chamberlain is about as much a Christian as that tree in my back yard.

This kind of behavior is so hateful and nasty. How could people who do this be at all happy on life?

LIB losers GONE WILD! What worthless, self-loathing nitwits. They can’t help but project their unhappiness, uselessness, and anger. It would be good for society if LIBs suicided.

It’s not just you.

FWIW, islam contains the OT and NT as well as so the argument about favoring one religion over another doesn’t hold water.

That Bible is part of history and should not be removed. it has NOTHING to do with the government endorsing religion, which is not what the Second Amendment states anyways.

"A tree that looks at God all day, And lifts her leafy arms to pray".

From "Trees" a poem by Joyce Kilmer.

Kilmer died on the battlefield near Muercy Farm, beside the Ourcq River near the village of Seringes-et-Nesles, in France, on July 30, 1918 at the age of 32. For his valor, Kilmer was posthumously awarded the Croix de Guerre (War Cross) by the French Republic.

Demonrats are just doing what demonrats do.

Just ask yourself, “What would Satan do?” And then look to the demonrats for his answer.

No God allowed! (But allah is). Abortion is a blessing. Gay marriage is LAW. Legal slavery until the mid 19th century, followed by mental/emotional slavery ever since. The destruction of the family with the father replaced by GovCo. And on and on and on, etc., etc., etc.

Nothing new. Same today as yesterday. You can check it out for yourself.

For example, the same techniques “they” used to rid themselves of Jesus and His disciples are the same used now against President Trump and his people.

“Here’s your sign...” “Sign, sign, everywhere a sign...”

This can only happen when the average American has no clue what the First Amendment actually says.

In my town the usual polling place for elections is a small room by the downtown registrar of voters’ office, with parking at the curb.

That was deemed inadequate in Nov. 2016, when a huge turnout was anticipated.

So, a local Baptist church offered its cafeteria/social hall building, with its parking lot (biggest in town) free of charge.

So of course the idiots were screaming about “violation of separation of church & state.”

I suppose there are different ways to look at it, religion comes
from the word ritual, James said true religion was to care for the
widows and orphans, in other words live like Jesus told us to.

The only ones Jesus had any problems with were the religious
leaders and he called them sons of their father the devil I do not
see that it is any different today, true there are a few men of
God out there but there were also a few in Christ’s time.

Satan is the ruler of this world because we gave him the power and
he is the author of religion and anti religion, everything is
religion.

Satan has been turned loose for a spell and he is raising hell.

Just my take.
