Bowing at the mention of Jesus name is an old practice that has since fallen into wide disuse
Msgr. Charles Pope June 10, 2018
Question: I was taught to nod my head when the name of Jesus was spoken. I see some priests and congregants do it, but not most. What is the current practice? — Diane Garrett, via email
Answer: Liturgically it is not required. This is a pious custom that, while less common today, is still observed by many. This is not only in the liturgy, but at any time the name of Jesus is uttered, and also, quite commonly, the name of Mary. In the traditional Latin Mass, where clergy wear birettas (a kind of square hat with a pom), there is the additional tipping (lifting off) of the biretta at the names of Jesus, Mary and the saint of the day. This external and very visible action also helped the faithful remember to bow their heads.
This laudable custom has sadly declined. Some clergy and others still observe it, and, while it is not required, it is worthy of being encouraged. Other customs too should not be forgotten, such as making the Sign of the Cross when passing a Catholic Church, praying the Angelus at noon and 6 p.m., and so forth. The generations raised in the 1960s and ’70s largely abandoned such practices. However, many of their children have rediscovered some of these lost customs like a precious heirloom brought down from the attic. Thus, while being careful not to harshly judge those who do not follow this non-required custom, many can joyfully take it up again and encourage others to do so.
How the commandments are numbered is not the issue.
The issue is that part is left out by Catholicism.
Nobody focuses on the minors like Catholicism.
Roman Catholics like to point to the seraphim and cherubim as examples of "ok graven images".
However, what they fail to notice is no one kneelt before, prayed to, or relied upon them for their salvation.
The bronze serpent was destroyed by King Hezekiah as the people had grown to worship the thing in particular by burning incense before it.....just as Rome allows for Mary.
There are myriads of writings by Roman Catholics who note they serve Mary and that one has to serve Mary. The apparitions claiming to be Mary tell Roman Catholics they must serve her.
Rome has departed from the Scriptures over this issue and has allowed this apostasy to occur.
Sure seems like that's what is being suggested as the 10.
Rome has to adjust those, in error, to remove any mention of the prohibition against idols as a separate commandment.
The Ten Commandments are not that hard to deal with.
Leaving out part of them and then claiming they are Gods word is dishonest and deceitful, especially when the only part left out (conveniently) would be the part that indicts Catholics for disobeying it.
Our alleged tradition has nothing to do with it.
We are posting the FULL Scripture passage, not just part of it to enable ourselves to justify disobeying it.
Im surprised you waited this long to switch the topic off of what we were discussing. Good job.
No switch needed...it goes to the heart of the topic.
Rome has modified the Ten Commandments for a reason.
Youre only fooling yourself. Both versions of the abbreviated Ten Commandments use only partial recitation of the Scripture. Both versions, including the one you insist is correct, are by tradition.
Call no man father.
He (?) should have italicized it.
It came from ME in #333
The version you use is modified. And you use graven images.
Yup; but I did NOT 'make it up'.
It is something that most EVERYONE has observed by watching the ACTIONS of the followers of Rome.
The post where metmom listed the 10 was from the Douay Rheims. She even linked to it.
We just REALLY like Mary!

What about it?
Thanks for adding this.
I have NO picture of how it all is supposed to work. If I tried to visualize it; I'd probably have it wrong.
I wonder...
...what ever happened to these 'saints' spoken of here?
22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
23 It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
24 For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:
Hey, ealgeone, do you use graven images?
I dont.
And Al, how do you KNOW what ealgeone does?
Did he tell you?
Or are you reading him mind and presuming to know what he does?
No it isn't. I'm using what is from Exodus or Deuteronomy.
And you use graven images.
Nope. No bowing down before an idol of Mary, praying to her, burning incense before the idol, reliance upon Mary for anything as witnessed in Roman Catholicism.
And please don't use Hahn's failed apologetical argument of having pictures of your mom and dad as graven images.
Please try to follow along. The First Commandment:
I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them. It is written: "You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve."
