Relic claimed to be bone from St Clement rescued from the bin

A small leather case containing a fragment of bone claimed to be a relic of St Clement, a pope who was martyred almost 2,000 years ago, has been found in rubbish collected from central London.

The waste disposal firm is now appealing for suggestions from the public for a more suitable final resting place for a saint than a bin.

The box, originally sealed with red wax and tied with crimson cords, contained a scrap of bone under a glass dome, with a faded strip of paper labelling it “Oss. S Clementis” – bone of St Clement.

St Clement is a somewhat obscure figure, and details of his life are hazy and contradictory. However, he is said to have been martyred around the year 100 – just short of his own centenary – by the Roman emperor Trajan, by being tied to an anchor and thrown into the sea off the Crimea: his fate made him a patron saint of mariners.

He was an early Roman convert to Christianity, said to have been made a bishop by St Paul himself and in time became bishop of Rome, which made him the third pope after the martyrdom of the saints Peter and Linus. He is said to have written important letters of spiritual guidance to the Corinthians who gave St Paul so much trouble.

The little box ended up in the hands of the Enviro Waste firm, which collects both commercial and domestic waste. The case was found after a run that included several different sites in central London, and so the firm cannot pinpoint where the relic came from. It was spotted when employees were sorting through the load to separate out anything that could be recycled.

At that time there was a pretty lucrative trade in buying and selling body parts of "saints" in order to achieve a "blessing".

Even more, churches were displaying these relics - for a fee, an indulgence - that if paid and viewed, would get you or a loved one out of purgatory faster.

There have probably been enough pieces of the ‘true cross’ to build a full size replica of Noah’s Ark.

So I guess you don't believe in the miracle of the fish and loaves either?

Father Guido Sarducci once had a chance to buy the skull of Saint James but turned it down because of a chip in the part usually connected to the neck.

Both examples at that first link had nothing to do with someone taking remains away from the person’s burial site for the purpose of veneration. I’ve never read anything in the Scripture that tells us to do deal in relics. It was not the hem of Jesus’ garment that healed the woman, it was her faith and Jesus’ mercy.

That’s a lot of conjecture in the article.

I would ask you to re-read the first link article. You missed some of the message.

No where in the NT are we ever told to keep and collect these things. Doing so shows a lack of faith in Christ on the part of the Roman Catholic.

When i am having a bad day I turn on CNN for the comic relief. I just start laughing, I can’t help myself, they the most idiotic people in the whole world, better than a clown show. I always feel better after watching them for about 5 minutes, no matter who is on. And they take themselves so seriously, OMG it’s hilarious!

Nowhere in Scripture are the remains of the dead collected, prayed to, fondled, kissed, etc.

It is not taught.
It is not commanded.
No Apostle is recorded as doing such a thing.
It is not seen before 100 AD

It is not an Apostolic practice, but a pagan one.

“Little children, keep yourselves from idols.”

I John 5:21

“There have probably been enough pieces of the ‘true cross’ to build a full size replica of Noah’s Ark.”

There was a 19th C Frenchman who decided to check out that old assumption. He went around to every sincle place he could find that had a relic of the cross and took measurements. It took years. When he was done, he found that all the relic material, combined together, was about enough for one cross.

Perhaps fake “true cross relics” are not nearly as ubiquitous as some might cynically assume.

Clement was an Orthodox Bishop of Rome (we once had them, as you well know) and an Orthodox Martyr:

The small relic, if authenticated, might be deposited in a new Altar at the Consecration of a new Orthodox Temple!!!!

Oh, sure.

Elsewhere, you can find the foreskin of Jesus and other purported items.

It is bogus, of course.

I believe in the miracle of the fish and loaves BUT IF the Catholic Church said they had some remnants of the miracle fish and loaves then THAT is what I would not believe. One is from God and recorded and the other is man made and fabricated.
