Where does a pastor get his authority?
Running Away From My Church Blog ^ | 1/7/2018 | Robert Messner

But that chain of authority is often not so clear in the church world, especially amongst non-denominational evangelicals. If a man or woman steps up behind a pulpit and speaks to us authoritatively on matters of theology, why do we automatically accept this authority? Is it because we like what we hear? Or do we validate the authority because the pastor’s interpretation of the Bible jives with our own understanding? But who are we to even make that judgement? Why is our interpretation of the Bible any better than the person sitting next to us on the pew? And if we disagree with an aspect of the pastor’s views, do we have a right to question him? Or do we have to accept what he says because we have already consented to his authority?

Well, lets start with the meaning of the word 'is'. This 'is' my Body. Where in Scripture does the word 'is' means represents?

When it's a metaphor, which Christ used a lot.

Like when He said He was the bread, the vine, the shepherd, the door.

Like *I am the vine*, *I am the door* etc.

Do that mean Jesus was green and leafy or that He was made out of wood or flour?

Get serious. ‘Am’ is not ‘is’. ‘Is like’ is not ‘is’

*am* certainly is the same as *is*.

It is a state of being verb, and used with the appropriate pronoun.

I am

He/she/it is

You are

We are

They are

You are

Are Catholics really that grammar challenged, too?

Again, are you saying that Jesus commanded the apostles to break the law and eat blood, thereby sinning?

Do you really think that Jesus would command people to sin?

And yet here, at the end of the John 6 discourse, Jesus Himself tells the disciples that He was speaking metaphorically.

John 6:63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

Get serious. ‘Am’ is not ‘is’. ‘Is like’ is not ‘is’ When God said, " and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Mat 3:17, it is the same ‘is’. The same in Greek. Is means is, except to those who have non-scriptural beliefs. Why does the ‘is’ in Mat3:17 not mean the same as the ‘is’ in “Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” Mat 26:26 And use Scripture to support your belief.

You want "serious"??? Okay, Jesus said his body was made out of bread and his blood was really wine? What part of "do this in remembrance of me" do you not understand?

There is basic structure in all churches, if only Pastor, Elders, ushers etd, and of course in Spirit filled churches...the Holy Spirit is welcome to change the course of worship whenever he desires...being open to a move of God.

Is this what you mean ?

I have some insights about how and why I've come to feel about God, never being good enough no matter how hard I try, and being scared by the way some Catholics still really believe.

You never have been, never can be, never will be good enough

It doesn't matter if you were to live an otherwise perfect life from here on out.

It cannot make up for all the sin you have committed in the past.

They are still on your record and must be accounted unless they are forgiven by God.

The Law drives us to Christ as it shows us that we cannot meet God's holy standard.

So we go to Christ and throw ourselves on the mercy of the court, as it were, like the tax collector and ask Him to forgive us and give us new life.

Luke 18:9-14 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’

But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Then God gives us a judicial pardon and cancels the record of sin debt that stands against us.

Colossians 2:13-14 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.

And He transfers us into Christ's kingdom.

Colossians 1:13-14 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

THAT is being saved. We go to heaven because our sin is paid for, in full, and not counted against us any more when we accept what Jesus has done for us on the cross.

Then there's no more worry about not being good enough, which is impossilbe anyways.

That’s how God gets the glory for saving us.

He does it in spite of the fact that we don’t deserve it.

Matter of fact, if we deserved it, WE’D get the glory for our being in heaven.

I think you are right, the only thing I would disagreement on
from what you said is the church. any church.

Thank You

That is quite a bit and after all brothers and sisters must have something to argue and tease each other about but when faced with an external threat they unite and act as one.

God Bless

The actual words of the New Testament gives us the answer. Everything changed with Christ. This is My Body means this IS MY Body

Not true.

The Law didn't change with Christ.

Jesus said that He didn't come to abolish the Law but to fulfill it.

Matthew 5:17-20 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.

Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

And the Law prohibits the eating of blood.

Don't eat the blood, the life is in the blood

Genesis 9:4 But you shall not eat flesh with its life , that is, its blood.

Leviticus 3:17 It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations, in all your dwelling places, that you eat neither fat nor blood.”

Leviticus 7:26-27 Moreover, you shall eat no blood whatever, whether of fowl or of animal, in any of your dwelling places. Whoever eats any blood, that person shall be cut off from his people.”

Leviticus 17:10-14 “If any one of the house of Israel or of the strangers who sojourn among them eats any blood, I will set my face against that person who eats blood and will cut him off from among his people. For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life. Therefore I have said to the people of Israel, No person among you shall eat blood, neither shall any stranger who sojourns among you eat blood.

“Any one also of the people of Israel, or of the strangers who sojourn among them, who takes in hunting any beast or bird that may be eaten shall pour out its blood and cover it with earth. For the life of every creature is its blood: its blood is its life. Therefore I have said to the people of Israel, You shall not eat the blood of any creature, for the life of every creature is its blood. Whoever eats it shall be cut off.

Leviticus 19:26 “You shall not eat any flesh with the blood in it. You shall not interpret omens or tell fortunes.

Deuteronomy 12:16 Only you shall not eat the blood ; you shall pour it out on the earth like water.

Deuteronomy 12:23 Only be sure that you do not eat the blood, for the blood is the life , and you shall not eat the life with the flesh.

Deuteronomy 15:23 Only you shall not eat its blood; you shall pour it out on the ground like water.

Acts 15:12-29 And all the assembly fell silent, and they listened to Barnabas and Paul as they related what signs and wonders God had done through them among the Gentiles. After they finished speaking, James replied, “Brothers, listen to me. Simeon has related how God first visited the Gentiles, to take from them a people for his name. And with this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is written,

“‘After this I will return, and I will rebuild the tent of David that has fallen; I will rebuild its ruins, and I will restore it, that the remnant of mankind may seek the Lord, and all the Gentiles who are called by my name, says the Lord, who makes these things known from of old.’

Therefore my judgment is that we should not trouble those of the Gentiles who turn to God, but should write to them to abstain from the things polluted by idols, and from sexual immorality, and from what has been strangled, and from blood. For from ancient generations Moses has had in every city those who proclaim him, for he is read every Sabbath in the synagogues.”

Then it seemed good to the apostles and the elders, with the whole church, to choose men from among them and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They sent Judas called Barsabbas, and Silas, leading men among the brothers, with the following letter:

“The brothers, both the apostles and the elders, to the brothers who are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia, greetings. Since we have heard that some persons have gone out from us and troubled you with words, unsettling your minds, although we gave them no instructions, it has seemed good to us, having come to one accord, to choose men and send them to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. We have therefore sent Judas and Silas, who themselves will tell you the same things by word of mouth. For it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay on you no greater burden than these requirements: that you abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from what has been strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well. Farewell.”

Here Jesus identifies what's in the cup as wine *the fruit of the vine*.

He TELLS us it's not His blood.

Matthew 26:29 I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

Mark 14:25 Truly, I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

Luke 22:18 For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

And here Jesus tells us that He was giving spiritual truths, not literal ones.

The flesh is no help at all.

HIS words.

John 6:63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

Thank you. I'm glad I'm not good enough on my own and that God gets the glory. Nope I'm not going to blame someone or something else. It is the way it is.

I've learned to be thankful for the least little things, can't say I was always that way. I do remember being thankful as a kid for some of my privileges but maybe some I took for granted.

Reading this list reminded me of these passages for some reason:

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them. (Matt. 23:1-4)

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matt. 11:28-30)

Bethel Church, a controversial megachurch in Redding, California, is now under fire in Christian circles for allegedly promoting New Age occultism in the use of "Destiny Cards," which critics have likened to tarot cards.

Damn!

You'd think they were publishing novenas or something!!
