Are You on the Verge of Wrecking Your Life?
Westside Christian Fellowshihp ^ | May 21st, 2015 | Shane Idleman

n Russell Moore’s compelling book, Tempted & Tried, a chapter entitled, Why You’re on the Verge of Wrecking Your Life (Especially If You Don’t Know It), caught my attention. Moore writes quoting a scientist who studied cattle behavior, “A slaughterhouse, in order to keep the cattle relaxed, should remove anything from the sight of the animals that isn’t completely familiar. The real problem is novelty…Workers shouldn’t yell at the cows, she said, and they should never ever use cattle prods, because they are counterproductive and unneeded. If you just keep the cows contented and comfortable, they’ll go wherever they’re led. Don’t surprise them, don’t unnerve them, and above all, don’t hurt them….”

Apparently, scientists devised new technology that revolutionized death in the large slaughter-houses. Moore continues, “The cows aren’t prodded off the truck but are led, in silence, onto a ramp. They go through a ‘squeeze chute’, a gentle pressure device that mimics a mother’s nuzzling touch. The cattle continue down the ramp onto a smoothly curving path. There are no sudden turns. The cows experience the sensation of going home, the same kind of way they’ve traveled so many times before. As they mosey along the path, they don’t even notice when their hooves are no longer touching the ground. A conveyor belt slowly lifts them gently upward, and then, in the twinkling of an eye, a blunt instrument levels a surgical strike right between their eyes. They’re transitioned from livestock to meat, and they’re never aware enough to be alarmed by any of it.”

This is difficult to read but necessary. It is a vivid visual for spiritual warfare. Succumbing to temptation is often gradual, easy, and effortless until the enemy levels a surgical strike right to the heart.

FWIW, Temple Grandin is the ‘scientist’ that came up with all of that. She is Autistic and is a master at understanding animals. She’s done a LOT to make our slaughterhouses more humane and more efficient. Read her book! See her movie! Visit her website!

The scientist mentioned here who wrote about animal husbandry is named Temple Grandin.

I recommend her books.

I have been on programs with her in the past. One time, a colleague and I drove her from western Kansas to Manhattan (Kansas). She is a very interesting person.

Great article. Along the lines of “how to boil a frog”.

As long as we remain fat, dumb and happy - we really don’t notice the impending doom. Before it’s too late.

A bit off topic, but they need to come up with a technique to humanely slaughter horses. They sense danger at every turn and there’s really no calming them down.

The cows experience the sensation of going home,

They are going home.

Their home is my belly. Welcome home, girls.

Thank you for sharing this. It’s an excellent reminder of how sliding into sin always starts with one small step.

I scanned the article, but didn’t see a credit to Temple’s research or quote. She is one of the most fascinating people about whom I’ve ever read. Watch the movie about her life, “Temple Grandin”, the mental health challenges (autism) she still lives with, and her accomplishments, in regard to the cattle industry, and in inspiring and teaching the respectful handling of these remarkable animals, which nourish us in so many ways.

I was going to ping you to this thread. But I see you’re already here!

I also see the thread veering away from the sin-convicting point of the thread right off the bat...

Revelation 3:14-22 “And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: ‘The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God's creation.

“‘I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself and the shame of your nakedness may not be seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, so that you may see. Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent. Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. The one who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’”

At least ONE of those cows knows what’s going on.

They better hope none ever escape and warn the rest out there :)

There in lies the problem. Horses are prey animals. They don’t lead very well in a herd. They keep their heads up high with their nostrils flared, eyes moving and ears perked looking for any sign of danger or threat. They will try to climb the pens and walls looking to escape.

Even the best trained horse will have its moments of fear when being led.
