Cardinal Burke: We Will Make ‘Formal Act of Correction’ if Pope Doesn’t Issue Amoris Clarification
The Catholic Herald (UK) ^ | 11/16/18 | Dan Hitchens

The cardinal said there was a tradition of issuing a formal correction if a Pope is in error

Cardinal Raymond Burke has said it may be necessary to make a “formal act of correction” if Pope Francis doesn’t answer a letter from four cardinals asking him to clarify aspects of Amoris Laetitia.

In an interview with Edward Pentin of National Catholic Register, Cardinal Burke said that if the Pope were to teach error or heresy, “It is the duty in such cases, and historically it has happened, of cardinals and bishops to make clear that the Pope is teaching error and to ask him to correct it.”

Cardinal Burke is one of four cardinals who have written to the Pope asking for a clarification of Amoris Laetitia. They say that the document could be read as contradicting Church teaching on the moral law and on the question of Communion for the remarried. The Pope has declined to reply to the letter.

Asked what would happen if the Pope remained silent, Cardinal Burke replied: “Then we would have to address that situation. There is, in the tradition of the Church, the practice of correction of the Roman Pontiff. It is something that is clearly quite rare. But if there is no response to these questions, then I would say that it would be a question of taking a formal act of correction of a serious error.”

That faction of our Protestant brethren who think Catholics will blindly follow an antiChrist in the See of Peter ought to pay careful attention to this. The four Cardinals are giving a clinic in exactly how to handle a Pope who errs.

Ideally, it should be difficult to detect the Pope’s political views. With Pope Francis it is hard to detect his religious views. His politics are in plain sight.

This is not about politics...the issue is the unclear theological statements he made regarding divorce and communion.

Catholics understand that God made the Holy sacrament of marriage to last forever...that a husband and wife becomes as one. When that is destroyed by divorce an investigation is conducted to determine if the marriage was or was not a holy marriage. This is done by Catholics who wish to partake in communion and or remarry ingredients in the Catholic Church.

The Pope made some statements which could be interpreted as varying from that. The fact that he is not answering suggests that he understands he made an error...he is just a man after all...and rather than say “I made an error” prefers to be corrected as this article talks about. I think it shows how on target the Catholic Church is to the biblical and traditional teachings of Christ.

I used to think like that but, after really paying attention to what he says...I am not so sure. He appears to be a man of great love who understands the unique circumstances of this time period. His messages are more about how he perceives God’s love and his attempts to follow with unconditional love. I do not agree with everything he says...including the loose statements he has made in this case. But, I have confidence in his love for all. That is exactly what a Pope should exemplify in this time of hatred and focus on the world.

The Vatican is just as political as any other country.

Of course it is about politics. One side has a view. The Pope has another. And they are going to jockey around their particular view and power struggles will ensue

While I am inclined to think that the observations of Wpin are right at the core, it seems to me that the Holy Father ought to be aware that his remarks are transmitted through the filter of the media, which makes the Honourable Senator’s observations essentially accurate.

Apparently there is a large “Swamp” problem somewhere in the heart of Rome that needs to be addressed too.

“The Vatican is just as political as any other country.”

Technically the Vatican is not really involved here. Note: None of the statements is from the Vatican staff. You have the pope and you have four of the cardinals (none of whom were made cardinal by him if I am not mistaken). You can’t pretend it’s the “Vatican” here to fit your apparently preconceived idea that religion is really just politics. It isn’t.

“Of course it is about politics. One side has a view. The Pope has another. And they are going to jockey around their particular view and power struggles will ensue”

That is not a definition of politics. If two people are arguing over football, that is not politics. If two people are arguing over car repair, that is not politics. If two people are arguing over religion - and specifically a theological question about marriage, that is not politics. It might resonate with certain political views or lines of thought, but it isn’t politics.

Only Leftists assume everything is politics and therefore politicize everything as such. We don’t do that.

What if he answers them and sticks to their guns?
Do they have enough support amongst the Cardinals to force him out?

I tend to doubt it.
This is a very high-stakes game of chicken they are playing.

The Pope IS the Vatican to the world.

And The Vatican has a long history of being political. This is no different. You can bet there is a lot of jockeying going on behind the scenes.

Btw, I think it is absolutely ludicrous to say the Pope and the Vatican aren’t mired in politics.

So I guess that the St. Paul’s correction of St. Peter was also just about politics.

there is a battle being fought in the Catholic Church. It is idiotic to say that there are not politics involved in the Church and the Cardinals and all the rest of the heirarchy.

You are probably accurate in his motivations, however, I think that idea is fatally misplaced.

The job description of the See of St. Peter is first and foremost to confirm the true doctrine of the universal Church. He needs to attend to spiritual works of mercy that are higher than the corporal works of mercy.

We have hundreds of wonderful religious orders to do acts of corporal charity...we do not expect them to expound on doctrine. We do expect it from him, but he is not doing it well.
