Of course it is about politics. One side has a view. The Pope has another. And they are going to jockey around their particular view and power struggles will ensue

Technically the Vatican is not really involved here. Note: None of the statements is from the Vatican staff. You have the pope and you have four of the cardinals (none of whom were made cardinal by him if I am not mistaken). You can’t pretend it’s the “Vatican” here to fit your apparently preconceived idea that religion is really just politics. It isn’t.

That is not a definition of politics. If two people are arguing over football, that is not politics. If two people are arguing over car repair, that is not politics. If two people are arguing over religion - and specifically a theological question about marriage, that is not politics. It might resonate with certain political views or lines of thought, but it isn’t politics.
Only Leftists assume everything is politics and therefore politicize everything as such. We don’t do that.
So I guess that the St. Paul’s correction of St. Peter was also just about politics.
