What was the role of the Catholic Church in building Western Civilization? While the typical mainstream narrative depicts the church as hostile to science and philosophy, it appears that once again the truth about history has been stolen from us. Dr. Duke Pesta joins Stefan Molyneux to discuss the unspoken truth about the impact of the Catholic church on scientific inquiry, philosophy and Western Civilization overall.

“And murdered Bruno.”

No, he got a trial and was guilty. There was no murder.

“Bzyantium created Western Civilzation”

Nope. Was “Western” enough, spoke too much Greek to be latinate, and didn’t have enough Germans and Celts to get the right flavor.

“And virtually every single predominantly Catholic country in this world is a third world hell hole.”

Ireland?

Italy?

France?

Croatia?

You don’t travel much do you?

“Look at their economies and standard of living. And the superstition and syncretism rife in their religious practices.”

Yeah, gee, there’s no syncretism or superstition among Protestants - except for the prosperity gospel, biblolatry, televangelists, etc.

“The Protestant work ethic got it’s name from somewhere. There was never anything called the *Catholic work ethic*.”

Yeah, it got its name from Max Weber - that’s not a good thing. You might want to look into that. And you apparently read as much as you travel:

“I’m sure Galileo as impressed with Catholicism’s contribution to science.”

He was. After all many of his heroes were Catholic scientists like himself.

I would say that France is still a Catholic country in many, many ways despite the secularism imposed on the country. Also, for 3rd world hellholes, I’d say the problem is that they are not Catholic enough and the paganism, animism, etc. still holds sway in many of these countries including Africa and South America.

“The Catholic Church invented marriage. Before it, men owned women as they did cattle and goats.”

No Catholic should believe the Church invented marriage. God invented marriage. The Church just teaches that it is a sacrament (instituted by Christ - a sort of re-invention of marriage in grace when you think about it), and that it should be filled with the love of Christ.

If it weren't for the solidly anti-Catholic British Empire half those hell holes wouldn't be hell holes just like half of South America wouldn't be in horrible shape if it weren't for solidly Protestant America constantly meddling in them.

The Catholic Church made plenty of mistakes over a thousand years ago but there's no way the British Empire and the US have made fewer in their brief tenure in leadership roles, Libya, Iraq, and Yemen, being only a few of the recent examples..

As for the science issue, the current global warming "science" along with clinging to totally discredited Darwinian theory of evolution are enough evidence that the Western World without the influence of the Catholic Church is doing far worse than it did when the Catholic Church sponsored scientists and didn't bother them a bit unless they tinkered in theology.

Your information about the ‘pagan rituals’ is based on what?

Thanks for posting this. And this video is hugely complementary to the series that Dr. Thomas Woods did, which is still posted over at EWTN - Builder of Civilization.

Roman Catholicism in the US, which is much like plain vanilla ice cream, it totally different that the pagan version found in 3rd world countries. The deeper you go into the 3rd world, the more pagan it becomes.

There is truth in that. Because unfortunately, while the truth of Roman Catholicism is invariable, many who claim to be Catholic have an imperfect understanding which leads to myriad imperfect practices.
