I know they have Maundy Thursday. I have heard of some people whipping themselves, but I have never actually physically seen anyone doing it. I know they crucify 3 guys every year. I think that is in Manila.
On the surface, the Philippines is a Catholic country, but below the surface, they are generally animist. They worship spirits, and have some superstitions. The strangest one, is the one where they tell you to be careful, or you will get pinched by a dwarf.

Not a Catholic here but flagellation has its Christian roots in Europe without regard for where it may be practiced today.
