Israeli President Reuven Rivlin paid a visit to Pope Francis in Rome, accompanied by his personal secretary Rivkah an Orthodox-Jewish woman. When a person usually greets the pope, they shake his hand and bow down. But when Rivkahs turn came to greet the pope, she explained to him that for religious reasons she could not shake his hand, nor could she bow down since he was wearing a cross. The pope then covered his cross with his hand, and bowed down to her!
Catholics genuflect, but not to people on this earth
Others? Meh
Senator Susan Collins curtsied to Qadaffi when he refused to shake her hand ( on YouTube video of Qadaffi meeting with her McCain Lieberman and Graham)
Stupid is as Stupid does
Huh? Since when?
Except Francis thinks he's doing God's Will.
This does a pretty good job speaking of papal etiquette:

The anti-Catholic bigotry is really getting out of hand here on FR, despite Jim Robinson’s recent dictate.
For the ignorant, the Pope was merely holding his cross so it wouldn’t swing when he bowed - very commonly done by bishops and cardinals as well. He was not covering the cross, silly bigoted people.
Hate him, beautiful Christians if you have to for some of his position - Jesus would be proud of you - but not for this act. Shame.
The circular firing squad doesn’t just apply to the Republican nomination...it’s for religion too, sadly.
I wouldn’t bow down to the pope either. He’s just a man like any other.
That’s what I’m talking about.

He didn’t hide it here either, right?
Considering the source, and the subject matter, and the fact it is a caption of dubious objectivity about a somewhat ambiguous photo, I reserve judgement about the event itself... About the captions, I disapprove, as I have great respect for both faiths.
What people on this thread who are criticizing Rivkah don’t understand is that a Jew is not permitted to bow to any human, no matter their position or religion. There are examples of this in the Bible. Frankly, she was polite for explaining this to the Pope.
Wow, he has a neat little pocket to hide away his crucifix!
Oy.
This was a calculated insult to the Pope by Israeli President. He knew that an orthodox woman would not shake hands with the Pope. He should have brought another aide, but chose not to.
The disdain isn’t for her not bowing. I wouldn’t have bowed either. The disdain is that HE bowed to her. I’d have been horrified had he bowed to me instead. WTH is wrong with him?
I’m willing to bet that Francis was not insulted.
I am Protestant married to an eastern orthodox Christian. Interesting to see a debate between Jews and Roman Catholics over protocol.
There are loads of examples of people in Scripture bowing to kings and other people as a gesture of respect. Nothing wrong with it; it’s only idols that are not to be bowed to. (Ms. Rivkin obviously regards the crucifix as an idol, as she indicated.)
Thank you!
