The disdain isn’t for her not bowing. I wouldn’t have bowed either. The disdain is that HE bowed to her. I’d have been horrified had he bowed to me instead. WTH is wrong with him?

Perhaps he was showing humility - a desirable trait in a leader, especially a religious leader. Jesus washed the feet of the apostles - why do you think the pope is above showing courtesy to a visitor?
