Her religion prevents her from shaking his hand. I didn't know the Cross was like garlic to a vampire when it comes to religious Jews but there you go. In no way should he have covered the Cross. Is there any protocol among people any more? Shouldn't all this be worked out in advance so that people don't embarrass or humiliate each other?

It is a Jewish custom called shomer negiah. Basically, Jewish men do not touch women; Jewish women do not touch men. Different Jews have different customs concerning handshakes.

Looking at the past 2000 years of Jewish-Christian relations and Judaism's relations with pre-Christian relations?

Shouldn't all this be worked out in advance so that people don't embarrass or humiliate each other?

I am lost as to how either side was embarrassed or humiliated.
