It is just ridiculous.

We must encourage modern hymn writers, like the Gettys.

:: grace is a necessary component to lead others to salvation in Christ. But it alone it is not enough. Grace without substance is pity and nothing more. ::

And, Chrysostom spins in his grave!

Taylor swift also said same sex marriage is ok, so I would not look to her as a role model for Christian singers. Amy Grant also has also joined the world we are to come out of. I’m sure there’s others who’s fame and money means more than following Gods word.

Good for children under 7, like “Jesus Loves Me.” IMHO. I personally would like an indepth hymn about the Return and the annihilation of all those who are against Him. Peace on Earth promise fulfilled.

Any way that does not bring discredit upon God seems fine to me. Although I take my own sacred music usually in a more classical vein.

The first example is something that goes way beyond just contemporary music, which I have no problem with in general - but that is this phony notion that “love” and “grace” means never disagreeing or expressing an opposing opinion.

My wife is on some “Christian women” forums, and a lot of them have bought into the liberal talking points of “love” and even “social Justice” and so on.

So many Christians are so deceived.

I find that when Christian Pop comes on, there is way too much “Hallelujah don’t we all love Jesus so much” and too little “Life sucks for me this way, and my evil gets me punished” like Johnny Cash.

Johnny was far more effective for Christ than all the pablum dished out on Christian Pop.

I’ll take the classical hymns any day. Forget the contemporary!

Somebody is straining to find problems. What I like about modern Christian music is it addresses real life issues and turns them over to God - like the Psalms. Much of old hymndom is one dimensional lyrically and cumbersome musically.

Hymns were new in their day. Every generation thinks modern music is somehow bad.

Christian Contemporary is just fine and it is very effective in bringing people to Christ. I am one of them and we know of many others.

I do not listen to many current songs. They just do not do anything for me. Give me the old quartet style singing. Back in the 80’s and early 90’s, I listened to a Christian station here but there are none here that play real songs anymore. Have you listened to Dave’s Highway from MS? If not look them up. A brother and 2 sisters who have been singing for years.

The problem with any modern music is that if you listen real close you might be able to understand the words they are saying. No rhythm, just a bunch of banging and plucking.

And they sound like a bunch of stuck pigs.

I don`t listen to much music of any kind for that reason, if I do listen to music I will pick Autry or hank sr. or one who does not sound like a cut hog.

God’s Own Child, I Gladly Say It
lyrics by Edmann Neumeister, published 1718
tune by Johann Caspar Bachofen, published 1727

Stanza 1

God’s own child, I gladly say it: I am baptized into Christ!
He, because I could not pay it, gave my full redemption price.
Do I need earth’s treasures many? I have one worth more than any
That brought me salvation free, Lasting to eternity!

Stanza 2

Sin, disturb my soul no longer: I am baptized into Christ!
I have comfort even stronger: Jesus’ cleansing sacrifice.
Should a guilty conscience seize me, since my baptism did release me
In a dear forgiving flood, sprinkling me with Jesus’ blood?

Stanza 3

Satan, hear this proclamation: I am baptized into Christ!
Drop your ugly accusation; I am not so soon enticed.
Now that to the font I’ve traveled, all your might has come unraveled,
And, against your tyranny, God, my Lord, unites with me!

Stanza 4

Death, you cannot end my gladness: I am baptized into Christ!
When I die, I leave all sadness to inherit paradise!
Though I lie in dust and ashes faith’s assurance brightly flashes:
Baptism has the strength divine to make life immortal mine.

Stanza 5

There is nothing worth comparing to this lifelong comfort sure!
Open-eyed my grave is staring: Even there I’ll sleep secure.
Though my flesh awaits its raising, still my soul continues praising:
I am baptized into Christ; I’m a child of paradise!

My favorite Contemporary Christian Artist (Been around for a while and definitely different from everybody else) is Michael Card. Great Musician, and powerful lyrics!

I saw a an evaluation of the top 100 modern Christian songs vs the top 100 Hymns. Not surprising but words that were very common of the hymns included: “sin, transgressions, forgive, blood, we, church” The old hymn songs on average contained more than 2 and a half words than modern songs (not counting the repeats).

The more common words for the modern songs included “I, me, love, praise”
The word “sin” was very uncommon”

Interesting article. Not quite sure what to make of it. I think Christian music has vastly improved over the shallow, sound-a-like versions of contemporary music that it used to try to emulate pop trends. Artists like Natalie Grant, Jeremy Camp, and Chris Tomlin bring a fresh and original take on the genre in addition to much needed production values. After not listening to much out there for a long time, they have me paying attention again,

We have a contemporary band at our church with some good singers but after years of listening to it I just can’t get into it. Sometimes I drive to church late just so I can miss the opening songs.
