Roman Catholic Bishop Ad van Luyn of Rotterdam has said that Pope Benedict's decision to rehabilitate renegade British Bishop Richard Williamson is "disastrous". Speaking on public television, Bishop Van Luyn said that Williamson's denial of the Holocaust and its gas chambers are "shocking, totally ahistoric, and at odds with the second Vatican Council [the 1962-65 church reform]".

A professor of theology and ethics at the Roman Catholic Radboud University in Nijmegen is leaving the church over the issue. Professor Jean-Pierre Wils told Radio Netherlands Worldwide

What totally amazes me is the fact that the very same people who are beating up on Benedict for this, have NO PROBLEM whatsoever with Obama attempting to “rehabilitate” The President of Iran - also an admitted Holocaust denier.

That is an excellent, excellent point! You're the first person I've heard point that out, and you're absolutely right.

I agree with you. By the way, may God bless you on your journey home. If you do decide to join, I am quite sure you will never regret it.

I hope that you, too, will soon return to full communion with The Church.

The mass media tends to overlook important developing stories in culture and religion. This is FR’s job to bring the news that matter from overlooked sources.

Looks like you were right. It still might not be news in Chicago but it's now on Drudge Report:

Call for pope to step down over Holocaust denier with the article linked here.

I have always been so. Sad that you would claim some power to decide otherwise.

I saw that headline and decided, it is too over the top to even post.

"If the pope wants to do some good for the Church, he should leave his job," eminent liberal Catholic theologian Hermann Haering told the German daily Tageszeitung.

The Holocaust has crossed over into theology.

The Pope is being attacked from the left (Many categories, including leftist Catholic theologians in Germany, Holland, and elsewhere)

From some of the SSPX (Well, Ok, but we won’t accept Vatican II)

From leftist Jews (Abe Foxman et al.)

From the Gays (article title, just 19 hours ago: Gays outraged by pope’s ‘homophobic attack’)

From his own curia (Article title: Rare public criticism heard at Vatican)

From his own people (Article title: Papal pride turns to shame in Germany)

From the U.S. (Article title: Democrats demand response from Pope Benedict)

Indeed. Right between
a groundhog day story and
a thing on Red Bull!

(Doesn't that tell you
how the mainstream media
thinks of this story?!)

You're more the welcome to believe this story appeared on the Drudge Report because "there's no buzz to pump" out in the real world.

Persnonally, I think it is disastrous—for the leftist bishops within the Church who have been destroying her from within over the past 50 years.

OK..... what I meant there was that the Pope has no POLITICAL power. Religious power yes, but in this day and age not that many people are religious anyway, so what difference does it make? Look, no disrespect to the Pope was meant here. I am a Catholic myself and admire the man tremendously. But my point still stands: he does not have political power, and he cannot - unlike the President of Iran - initiate a nuclear war. The Iran guy has some REAL power in the temporal world, and to “rehabilitate” him without taking extreme precautions about his intentions, is not a good idea.

Neither did Jesus have political power, and see what happened.

fear ye not them that kill the body, and are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him that can destroy both soul and body in hell
Ideas is what has power. The Pope has them. Achmadinejad (sp) -- not so much.

Was Russia not highly cultured? Was it not, after the abdication of the Tsar, democratic?

1. No. It was, with some justification, regarded as having only a fairly thin veneer of Western civilization.
2. No. The Kerensky government was never in effective control of large parts of the country.

Next questions?

The thin veneer included Tchaikovsky, Tolstoy and Mendeleev.

Which Americans of the time stand comparison?

The same people who regarded Russia’s civilisation as fairly thin would have been scarcely more—or even less—charitable towards the U.S. of the same era.
