As David Bernstein points out today in this post on The Volokh Conspiracy, the confirmation of Judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court will result in a Catholic majority on that bench. It seems timely, therefore, to speculate on the potential changes in store for that august institution:
10) Meat-less Fridays all year round in the Supreme Court cafeteria;
9) Oral arguments in Latin;
8) The bones of Chief Justice Marshall will be disinterred and placed in a glass coffin in the center of the Supreme Court bench;
7) Collections between each session of oral argument;
6) Supreme Court windows replaced with stained glass;
5) On close votes, the Justices will consult a statue of St. Thomas More. If the statue weeps, they affirm; if no tears, then they reverse.
4) Incense at the start of each session;
3) Supreme Court opinions will be deemed infallible and unreviewable by any earthly authority [Ed. - Sorry - that does not appear to be a change at all]
2) Catechism of the Catholic Church will now be "persuasive authority";
And, the number one change which a Catholic majority would make to the Supreme Court . . .
1) Wednesday night bingo!
And here I thought we were just letting them do our accounting. I didn't know it was a joint venture.... :^)
There's always Mac & Cheese or pizza with peppers and or mushrooms.
"...there were only two classes of people with respect to God: those of Israel (the Jews) and those NOT of Israel (gentiles)..."
Now you've got it! There were just Jews and Gentiles before Christ. It was those converted (Gentiles) followers of Christ that called themselves 'Christians'.
Same here. I find it reminds me to start thinking of what I need to confess on Saturday.
The nuns with guns picture makes me want to make things up to confess just so I am sure I get it all covered sufficiently! Eeek!! They offered me the opportunity, I could have stayed, it's those orders that live with the "vow of silence" that really frighten me! May the Lord forgive me, I do not think I have the strength to work with Lepers, I don't think I am cruel enough to be a "teaching nun" (only the cruelest may apply). Just joking Sister Mary Catherine, I STILL need BOTH of my ears, even now!
Parochial school did give me some measure of assurance when I became a parent, I knew if my boy had misbehaved, he had already been punished when he was "caught in the act". I was never disappointed by the fact that I/we learned when we went to school!
I have never had students that attended parochial schools that had to be tutored in literacy. I have been a Laubach Certified Literacy Tutor for more than 10 years. Except when it is a matter of teaching English as a second language, I have NEVER tutored a child who was educated in a Catholic Parochial Academy. The students that I have taught that were learning to read and write English, always had their home study work done and were ready for their next lesson with me too. I never hurt them, I never got "my ruler" out or did the eye brow thing at them, I just never had to. You never quite get over that fear.
I make a mean salmon cake for Fridays when I do not feel like having fish sticks. I will share my recipe if anyone would like it. I find it goes best with the Orange Kool-Aid (and if you really want to get wild, you can mix that with some pineapple juice! (A tupperware cup enhances the flavor, I think), and REAL baked macaroni and sharp cheddar cheese. It does not all have to be boring! :-D
Are those some of the 72 virgins waiting in heaven to greet the souls of Islamic terrorists? /evil grin>
Are French-Canadian Catholics the only ones who eat baked beans and fried dough on Fridays?
Actually they can be revoked by a Constitutional Amendment or by overthrowing the government.
Catechism of the Catholic Church will now be "persuasive authority"
Hey, if the liberals on the court can consult foreign law for guidance, so can the conservatives. What's good for the goose is good for the gander.
Touché. LOL!!
You had me thinking in terms of Catholic/Protestant/unsaved from the get-go, so I totally didn't see your conclusion coming at all.
This is really funny and everyone has a good sense of humor about it here on this forum. But I get a feeling that the dems are probably not amused about this little fact, at all. And I would imagine it to be a little more than that. If they don't start talking about that fact, I would be greatly surprised since a few of those a-wipes actually brought up the faith of JR at his hearings, and many here were outraged
Isn't that the game where one person yells BINGO! and everyone else mutters "Oh sh*t!"?
:)
Tough love before it became pop. Every moment is a 'teaching' moment.
No, Sister, I didn't know that.
Sorry, your desire to say that, for some strange reason, rankles me.
Are you equally interested to know that, having three children of my own, I was given a fourth child whom I reared from his birth when I was 44? I refer to my first grandson. I only mention this to show that many, many people put others ahead of themselves to give them what they deserve, and the possible sacrifice is set aside.
I use just one example that I've experienced to make the point. Other than saying it here to make that point, no one has ever heard me mention what I, just to use one case, have done. If the subject is brought up, it is others who acknowledge and give praise. I appreciate their recognition of some good thing I've done, but I look upon this as a special blessing from God. My "last baby" (in a way, because he is his mother's son and always has been) is a joy to me. He is not the little boy anymore and I will love him deeply forever. To assure him a secure background beats eating fish or meat on Fridays, though I have no problem doing that either.
I don't care if someone chooses to eat cheese sandwiches or macaroni and cheese, or any other meatless meal on Fridays. With all the needs this world has, it strikes me that some attention to others' needs to have a higher priority. Maybe our Lord disagrees with me. And, on the other hand, we can do both.
*13 You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing anymore but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men.
14 You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid.
15 Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house.
16 So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
Little known fact about this picture of Nuns with Guns. Taken back I think in the 50's these Nuns ran a summer camp and the guns were for the shooting range.
I figured they were either students or teachers on a shooting range of some sort. Since they're all wearing pretty severe habits, it has to be be pre-1965. They might be Sisters of St. Joseph from the cut of their habits.
