Psalm: Wednesday 44 Reading I Responsorial Psalm Gospel

Reading I
Gal 5:18-25

Brothers and sisters:
If you are guided by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
Now the works of the flesh are obvious:
immorality, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry,
sorcery, hatreds, rivalry, jealousy,
outbursts of fury, acts of selfishness,
dissensions, factions, occasions of envy,
drinking bouts, orgies, and the like.
I warn you, as I warned you before,
that those who do such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God.
In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness, generosity,
faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.
Against such there is no law.
Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their flesh
with its passions and desires.
If we live in the Spirit, let us also follow the Spirit.

Responsorial Psalm
Ps 1:1-2, 3, 4 and 6

R (see Jn 8:12) Those who follow you, Lord, will have the light of life.
Blessed the man who follows not
the counsel of the wicked
Nor walks in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the company of the insolent,
But delights in the law of the LORD
and meditates on his law day and night.
R Those who follow you, Lord, will have the light of life.
He is like a tree
planted near running water,
That yields its fruit in due season,
and whose leaves never fade.
Whatever he does, prospers.
R Those who follow you, Lord, will have the light of life.
Not so the wicked, not so;
they are like chaff which the wind drives away.
For the LORD watches over the way of the just,
but the way of the wicked vanishes.
R Those who follow you, Lord, will have the light of life.

Gospel
Lk 11:42-46

The Lord said:
"Woe to you Pharisees!
You pay tithes of mint and of rue and of every garden herb,
but you pay no attention to judgment and to love for God.
These you should have done, without overlooking the others.
Woe to you Pharisees!
You love the seat of honor in synagogues
and greetings in marketplaces.
Woe to you!
You are like unseen graves over which people unknowingly walk."

Then one of the scholars of the law said to him in reply,
"Teacher, by saying this you are insulting us too."
And he said, "Woe also to you scholars of the law!
You impose on people burdens hard to carry,
but you yourselves do not lift one finger to touch them."

From: Galatians 5:18-25

The Fruits of the Spirit and the Works of the Flesh (Continuation)

[16] But I say, walk by the Spirit, and do not gratify the desires of
the flesh. [17] For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit,
and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh; for these are
opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you would.
[18] But if you are led by the Spirit you are not under the law.
[19] Now the works of the flesh are plain: immorality, impurity,
licentiousness, [20] idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy,
anger, selfishness, dissension, party spirit, [21] envy, drunkenness,
carousing, and the like. I warn you, as I warned you before, that
those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
[22] But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness, [23] gentleness, self-control;
against such there is no law. [24] And those who belong to Christ
Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
[25] If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.

Commentary:

17-21. The fall of Adam and Eve left us with a tendency to seek created
things for our own pleasure, instead of using them to lead us to God.
The desires of the flesh make their appearance, urges which are at odds
with God and with all that is noble in our personality. But when grace
enters our soul and justifies us, we share in the fruits of the
Redemption wrought by Christ and we are enabled to conquer our
concupiscence and life according to the flesh.

The vices referred to in vv. 19-21 have their roots in something much
deeper--life "of the flesh". And, St Augustine asserts, "it is said
that someone lives according to the flesh when he lives for himself.
Therefore, in this case, by 'flesh' is meant the whole person. For
everything which stems from a disordered love of oneself is called work
of the flesh" ("The City of God", 14, 2).

This is why we find included in the "works of the flesh" not only sins
of impurity (v. 19) and faults of temperance (v. 21 ) but also sins
against the virtues of religion and fraternal charity (v. 20).

"Significantly, when speaking of 'the works of the flesh' Paul mentions
not only 'immorality [fornication], impurity, licentiousness [...],
drunkenness, carousing'--all of which objectively speaking are
connected with the flesh; he also names other sins which we do not
usually put in the 'carnal' or 'sexual' category --'idolatry, sorcery,
enmity, strife, jealousy, anger, envy' [...]. All these sins are the
outcome of 'life according to the flesh', which is the opposite
to 'life according to the spirit"' (John Paul 11, "Address", 7 January
1981).

Therefore, as the Apostle says, anyone who in one way or other
obstinately persists in his sin will not be able to enter the Kingdom
of heaven (cf. 1 Cor 6:9-10; Eph 5:5)

22-25. When someone lets himself be led by his instincts he is said to
be leading an "animal life"; whereas, if he acts as his reason advises,
he is leading a rational, human, life. Similarly, when one allows the
Holy Spirit to act, one's life becomes life according to the Spirit--a
supernatural life, a life which is no longer simply human but divine.
This is what happens when a person is in the state of grace and is
mindful of the treasure he bears within.

"Alone! You are not alone. We are keeping you close company from afar.
Besides..., the Holy Spirit, living in your soul in grace--God with
you--is giving a supernatural tone to all your thoughts, desires and
actions" ([St] J. Escriva, "The Way", 273).

The soul then becomes a good tree which is known by its fruits. Its
actions reveal the presence of the Paraclete, and because of the
spiritual delight they give the soul, these actions are called fruits
of the Holy Spirit (cf. St Thomas Aquinas, Summa theologiae, I-II, q.
70, a. 1).

"Those blessed fruits enumerated by the Apostle (Gal 5:22) the Spirit
produces and shows forth in the just, even in this mortal life--fruits
replete with all sweetness and joy. Such must, indeed, be from the
Spirit 'who in the Trinity is the love of the Father and the Son,
filling all creatures with immeasurable sweetness' (St Augustine, "De
Trinitate", 6, 9)" (Leo XIII, "Divinum illud munus", 12).

The Hypocrisy of the Scribes and Pharisees (Continuation)

(Jesus said to the Pharisees,) [42] "But woe to you Pharisees! for you
tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of
God; these you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.
[43] Woe to you Pharisees! for you love the best seat in the synagogues
and salutations in the market places. [44] Woe to you! for you are like
graves which are not seen, and men walk over them without knowing it."

[45] One of the lawyers answered Him, "Teacher, in saying this You
reproach us also." [46] And He said, "Woe to you lawyers also! for you
load men with burdens hard to bear and you yourselves do not touch the
burdens with one of your fingers."

Commentary:

42. The Law of Moses laid down that the harvest had to be tithed (cf.
Leviticus 27:30-33; Deuteronomy 12:22ff; etc.) to provide for the
worship offered in the temple. Insignificant products were not subject
to this Law.

Rue is a bitter medicinal plant used by the Jews in ancient times. Did
it have to be tithed?: the Pharisees, who were so nit-picking, said
that it did.

44. According to the Old Law, anyone who touched a grave became unclean
for seven days (Num 19:16), but with the passage of time a grave could
become so overgrown that a person could walk on it without noticing.
Our Lord uses this comparison to unmask the hypocrisy of these people
He is talking to: they are very exact about very small details but they
forget their basic duty--justice and the love of God (verse 42). On
the outside they are clean but their hearts are full of malice and
rottenness (verse 39); they pretend to be just, appearances are all
that matters to them; they know that virtue is held in high regard,
therefore they strive to appear highly virtuous (verse 43). Duplicity
and deceit mark their lives.

FEAST OF THE DAY

King Edward the Confessor was son of King Ethelred II. His father
was unseated by a Danish invasion and Edward and his brother
were sent to Denmark to be quietly killed. The officer in charge of
carrying out the order felt mercy and took the two boys to Sweden,
from where they were sent to the King of Hungary to be raised and
educated. After their education was completed, Edward and his
brother moved to Normandy to wait for their chance to return home
to England.

Edward began to gain a reputation as being just and worthy of the
kingship and the people of England gave him their support. After a
long wait, Edward was restored to the throne of his father, crowned
on Easter day 1042 and at the age of 40 began a reign governed
with justice and peace. During his reign, Edward repulsed invasion,
helped restore the King of Scotland to his throne, and was generous
in the distribution of the royal treasury. He remitted many unjust
taxes and was well known for his piety and love of God. Edward died
around the year 1066.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

God is so good and merciful, that to obtain Heaven it is sufficient to
ask it of Him from our hearts. - St. Benedict Joseph Labre

Witnesses reported -

"I looked at the sun and saw it spinning like a disc, rolling on itself. I saw people changing colour. They were stained with the colours of the rainbow. The sun seemed to fall down from the sky . . . The people said that the world was going to end . . . They were afraid and screaming." Antonio de Oliveiro, Farmer.

"Suddenly the rain stopped and a great splendour appeared and the children cried: 'Look at the sun!' I saw the sun coming down, feeling that it was falling to the ground. At that moment, I collapsed." Maria Candida da Silva.

"I looked and saw that the people were in various colours - yellow, white, blue. At the same time, I beheld the sun spinning at great speed and very near me. I at once thought: I am going to die." Rev. Joao Menitra.

"Before the astonished eyes of the crowd, whose aspect was biblical as they stood bareheaded, pale with fright, eagerly searching the sky, the sun trembled, made sudden incredible movements outside all cosmic laws - the sun 'danced' according to the typical expression of the people. Standing at the step of the Torres Novas bus was an old man, whose appearance in face and figure reminded one of Paul Deroulede. With his face turned towards the sun he recited the Creed in a loud voice . . . Afterwards, I saw him going up to those around him who still had their hats on, and vehemently imploring them to uncover their heads before such an extraordinary demonstration of the existence of God. Identical scenes were repeated elsewhere, and in one place, a woman cried out in a gasp of surprise: 'How dreadful that there are some men who do not even bare their heads before such a stupendous miracle!' People then began to ask each other what they had seen. The great majority admitted to having seen the trembling and the dancing of the sun. Others affirmed that they saw the face of the Blessed Virgin, while others swore that the sun whirled on itself to the earth as if to burn it with its rays. Some said they saw it change colours successively."

"It was almost three o'clock in the afternoon. The sky was swept clear of clouds and the sun followed its course in its usual splendour, so that no one ventured to gaze at it directly. What about the little shepherds? Lucia, who had spoken to Our Lady, was announcing with expressive gestures, as she was carried along shoulder-high by a man and passed from group to group, that the war would end and that the soldiers would return . . . But news like that, however, did nothing to increase the jubilation of those who heard it. The heavenly sign was sufficient for them: it was everything.

"Intense curiosity prevailed to see the two little girls in their wreaths of roses, and to kiss the hands of these 'little saints', one of whom, Jacinta, seemed nearer to fainting than dancing. They had so longed to see the sign from Heaven: they had seen and were satisfied and radiated burning faith . . . The crowd dispersed rapidly, without any difficulty, without any sign of disorder, without any need for policemen to regulate them. Those who were the first to arrive were also the first to depart, running out on the roadway, travelling on foot with their footwear in a bundle on their heads or strung from their staffs. They went, with hearts overflowing with joy, to bring the good news to their hamlets that had not been wholly depopulated for the time being.

"And what of the priests? Some turned up at the place, mingling more among the curious spectators rather than among the pilgrims avid for heavenly signs and favours. Perhaps neither one nor the other succeeded in concealing their happiness, which so often transpired in triumphant guise . . . It only remains for those competent to do justice to the bewildering dance of the sun which, on this day in Fatima, caused Hosannas to resound from the hearts of all the faithful present, and naturally made a great impression, as people worthy of belief assured me, on the freethinkers and others without any religious conviction who had come to this now famous spot located on the poor pastureland high up on the serra. Avelino de Almeida."

"The sun started to roll from one place to another and changed to blue, yellow - all colours. Then we see the sun coming towards the children. Everyone was crying out. Some started to confess their sins because there was no priest around there . . . My mother grabbed me to her and started to cry, saying 'It is the end of the world!' And then we see the sun come right into the trees . . ." Dominic Reis, in an American TV interview, 1960.

This sounds much like a UFO / ET experience - holographic projections for many to see. It included spiritual messages to be read at the appropriate times. Two of the messages have come to pass. The third is known by certain members of the clergy.

After reading some particularly hatefilled articles this morning, I would like to offer up this prayer:

O Lord,
infinite Ocean of Mercy,
our source,
our hope,
our truth,
help us this day to be your hands here
on this world
where the unmerciful nature
of the dark confronts us daily.

Help us this day to be lanterns of your light
and show those around us
that the dark
is not the truth
no matter how common
or prevalent.

Help us this day
to be beacons of your hope,
and by our love for your,
by our actions,
by our words
by the choices we make
may we show others the way
home to you.

ROMAN MISSAL | DOUAY TEXTS

.......................... †JMJ† ..........................
-- Wednesday, 28th Week in Ordinary Time --
....................... † AMDG † .......................

FIRST READINGGal 5:18-25
Those who belong to Christ Jesus
have crucified their flesh with its passions and desires

But if you are led by the spirit,
you are not under the law.
Now the works of the flesh are manifest,
which are fornication, uncleanness, immodesty, luxury,
Idolatry, witchcrafts, enmities, contentions,
emulations, wraths, quarrels, dissensions, sects,

Envies, murders, drunkenness, revellings,
and such like. Of the which I foretell you,
as I have foretold to you, that they who do such things
shall not obtain the kingdom of God.

But the fruit of the Spirit is, charity, joy,
peace, patience, benignity, goodness, longanimity,
Mildness, faith, modesty, continency, chastity.

Against such there is no law.
And they that are Christ's, have crucified their flesh,
with the vices and concupiscences.
If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

26 Let us not be made desirous of vain glory,
provoking one another, envying on another.

RESPONSORIAL PSALMPs 1:1-4, 6
R (Jn 8:12): Qui séquitur te, Dómine, bebébit lucem vitæ.
I am the light of the world:
he that followeth me, walketh not in darkness,
but shall have the light of life.

Blessed is the man
who hath not walked in the counsel of the ungodly,
nor stood in the way of sinners,
nor sat in the chair of pestilence.

But his will is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he shall meditate day and night.
And he shall be like a tree
which is planted near the running waters,
which shall bring forth its fruit, in due season.
And his leaf shall not fall off:
and all whosoever he shall do shall prosper.

Not so the wicked, not so:
but like the dust, which the wind driveth
from the face of the earth.

5 Therefore the wicked shall not rise again in judgment:
nor sinners in the council of the just.

For the Lord knoweth the way of the just:
and the way of the wicked shall perish.

GOSPELLuke 11:42-46
Woe to you Pharisees! Woe to you also, scholars of the law!

But woe to you, Pharisees,
because you tithe mint and rue and every herb;
and pass over judgment, and the charity of God.

Now these things you ought to have done,
and not to leave the other undone.

Woe to you, Pharisees,
because you love the uppermost seats in the synagogues,
and salutations in the marketplace.

Woe to you,
because you are as sepulchres that appear not,
and men that walk over are not aware.

And one of the lawyers answering, saith to him:
Master, in saying these things, thou reproachest us also.
But he said:

Woe to you lawyers also,
because you load men with burdens which they cannot bear,
and you yourselves touch not the packs with one of your fingers.

46 "Woe to you lawyers"... He speaks of the doctors of the law of Moses, commonly called the scribes.

37 And as he was speaking, a certain Pharisee prayed him that he would dine with him. And he going in, sat down to eat. et cum loqueretur rogavit illum quidam Pharisaeus ut pranderet apud se et ingressus recubuit
38 And the Pharisee began to say, thinking within himself, why he was not washed before dinner. Pharisaeus autem coepit intra se reputans dicere quare non baptizatus esset ante prandium
39 And the Lord said to him: Now you, Pharisees, make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter: but your inside is full of rapine and iniquity. et ait Dominus ad illum nunc vos Pharisaei quod de foris est calicis et catini mundatis quod autem intus est vestrum plenum est rapina et iniquitate
40 Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make also that which is within? stulti nonne qui fecit quod de foris est etiam id quod de intus est fecit
41 But yet that which remaineth, give alms: and behold, all things are clean unto you. verumtamen quod superest date elemosynam et ecce omnia munda sunt vobis

NAME and ORIGIN
(p. 9 of the Handbook)

The Legion of Mary is an Association of Catholics who, with the sanction of the Church and under the powerful leadership of Mary Immaculate, Mediatrix of all Graces (who is fair as the moon, bright as the sun and -- to satan and his legionaries -- terrible as an army set in battle array), have formed themselves into a Legion for service in the warfare which is perpetually waged by teh Church against the world and its evil powers.
Quote:
The whole life of men, both individual and social, shows itself to be a struggle, and a dramatic one, between good and evil, between light and darkness.
The lgeionaries hope to render themselves worhty of their great heavenly Queen by their loyality, their virtues, and their courage. The Legion of Mary is therefore organized on the model of an army, principally on that of the army of ancient Rome, the terminology of which is adopted also. But the army and the arms of legionaries of Mary are not of this world.

St. Annes from Scranton PA had all internet Daily Mass posters in their intentions today on TV Catholic Mass.

Bump for Catholic Mass for the homebound.

I usaully don't donate 'cept as a FR Monthly donor but I felt it was important to support the ability to keep Mass on tv via St. Anne.

King Vanity has a need being homebound for daily mass via the tv.

I don't feel like reading out loud all the time but Salvation your morning Daily thread is my alarm clock to set reminder for KV to watch 12:30 Mass which I often share and pray along with them.
