Life Flight was called to help the man neighbors identified as Edward Vega, of 121 Italy St., after he was shot in the chest around 6 p.m. But the Life Flight doctor declared him dead, and the helicopter took off without him You know you're having a bad day when Life Flight comes to pick you up and then leaves without you...

There are many conflicting statements in this report. He was a great guy - his girlfriend - with 4 kids and one on the way called the cops and said the man was violating an order to stay away - ran to the dying man and kissed him.
Am I missing something in this whole story?

No seems to be denying he was swinging a weapon at the cops. That is enough to shoot him right there.
Too Bad. He dead. sounds like he lived as a fool, and he died as a fool. One less piece of trash.
Moral of the story? Don't go after the cops with a weapon. You will get shot. Only stupid people get themselves shot dead like this.

Where does a cop draw the line? They could have just shot the guy in the leg, or used mace. He AND the rake would have gone down.
On the other hand, maybe the guy was just a real scumbag and deserved to die. I sometimes wonder if cops, in certain situations, simply become judge jury& executioner....and nobody knows the difference.

Good point. I never quite understand situations like this where the officer clearly has the firepower advantage yet shoots to kill. But then again, I've never been there. But it just doesn't seem right in a situation where a guy is swinging a rake to shoot to kill.

No seems to be denying he was swinging a weapon at the cops. That is enough to shoot him right there. Really??? So if your neighbor comes over and 'threatens you with a rake' you can just blow 'em away?
You'd be brought up on charges in a heartbeat.
To: Victor
yeah, your inclination is to wonder why they didn't just shoot him in the arm or leg....but, there is not enough real info in the story to assess completely. If the girl had a protection order...we don't know why. Cops used to be hammered for ignoring protection orders, letting the guy go ahead and beat or kill the wife or girlfriend. They are damned if they do and damned if they don't stop these nuts.

Totally unrealistic. You can't plan to shoot to wound. That's for Hollywood. Think about trying to hit a moving arm or leg.
I don't know all the facts, so I can't say that the LEO's weren't a little hasty. But if it gets to that point - for police or private citizen - center mass is your friend....

If I were to kill someone in a similar situation I would go to jail. The cop is almost certainly a coward or a vicious thug or both.

In my military career I have known about men shot in the leg who died within minutes due to cutting the femoral artery. It's not uncommon. This can happen to a arm shot, too (but rarer). There has also been cases when someone has been shot in the heart or head and lived. When you shoot someone, assume you shoot to kill. Only God knows the outcome.

Totally unrealistic. You can't plan to shoot to wound. "That's when one trooper, about three steps away from the raging man, fired the shot, the neighbors said."
You're right...you can't expect a cop shooting from 3 feet away to hit a leg.
The cop is indeed fortunate that he was able to hit the guy at all from that distance.
To: ActionNewsBill
...shooting from 3 feet away to hit a leg.should be 3 steps away...maybe 9 feet.
Still a pretty far distance for a cop to make an accurate shot.

Taser, pepper spray, bean bag gun, rubber bullets, baton....all less lethal alternatives.

I think part of the problem is the attitude that leos seem to have nowadays.
Watch "cops" for an example. The condescending, bullyboy attitude does nothing to help diffuse a situation.
It's an ego thing the cop says "drop the rake" the guy says no.. kiss my a$$" .. then rather than suffer the "humiliation " of being disobeyed and looking for a way to calm the situation( like perhaps backing down a bit)the leo decides the best thing to do is shoot to kill.
Just wait until all those "peace keepers" from iraq come home and get jobs with the local sheriffs dept.
I m sure they'll know how to keep the civilian population under control.

We aren't told the size of the rake, whether the officer was hit with it, how long and how many the tines were, etc. A rake could make a pretty effective stick weapon, though it seems unlikely. I suspect the guy was drunk, or maybe it was suicide by cop. Once men get into the whole "domestic violence" system, their options get dramaticly reduced, they tend to be assumed guilty, and many become suicidal after loosing everything.
