do we all assume it was a bamboo rake or something? it was a "garden rake"... would have been a metal rake with those short heavy tines

They paint such a wonderful picture of this guy. You'd think he was being nominated for Father-Of-The-Year. Somehow, I don't know, call it a hunch, I don't think that picture is quite what it appears to be.

As someone who live fairly close to this area, I can tell you that domestic disputes like this are routine.

Police are authorized to use deadly force if they are threatened.

People need to learn to obey authority.

Local police in rural areas cannot afford tasers, bean-bag guns, etc. They are lucky to keep the donut dirt out of their sidearm.

Look at it this way: Why do you assume that the cop was right and NOT a vicious moster? Shouldn't we, if we want to stay a free people, question every shooting and demand that the shooter justify their killing instead of giving them a pass? This applies to cops and private citizens. If you had just read that a private person killed a neighbor swinging a rake what would your reations be? That a gun was a senseless response?

Troopers were back at the scene Thursday talking to neighbors and witnesses and digging into Vega's background. Court papers say three months ago, Vega attacked Shatrosky, choking her. According to court documents, the attack three months ago wasn't the first. Christina Shatrosky wrote, "In the past, Eddie Vega has pushed me down stairs, broken my nose, kicked me punched me in the face, pulled my hair and has been abusive to me while being pregnant with my daughter."

That's a seriously scary mentality you have there.

It's not at all surprising that the wife/girlfriend would run to him and kiss him. There's often a bizzare love/hate thing in an abusive relationship. It's also not unusual for an abusive spouse to be a really nice person most of the time.

whatever happened to warning shots?

granted there are circumstances where that would be inappropriate, but this seems like the kind of situation that could be calmed down by a very loud gunshot into the air.

Actually the neighbors were not the one's terrorized by him so it is safe to say the wife/girlfriend is safe for now.

Everybody knows the cops would gun down a baby with a pacifier if the baby threatened them with it. Our brave heroes.

I never quite understand situations like this where the officer clearly has the firepower advantage yet shoots to kill.

You guys counseling arm and leg shots really ought to take the trouble to educate yourself before you post your ignorant opinions and come off looking like idiots. Let's review some facts:

1) It is wickedly difficult to hit a moving target under the best of circumstances.

2) In tense situations, certain physiological changes make it much harder to perform fine motor skills such as aiming and pulling a trigger.

3) Arm shots (rarely) and leg shots (easily) can be fatal.

4) Criminals have been shot in the head or heart and still lived long enough to fatally injure a police officer.

You can't plan to shoot to wound.

From "three steps" away? If you can't hit someone in a lower extremity from that close, you don't deserve to be carrying a firearm. Period.
