The nutritionist who condemned the protein-based Atkins Diet is working on a report looking at the benefits of a high-carbohydrate diet funded by the Flour Advisory Bureau (Fab).
It emerged yesterday that Susan Jebb, the head of nutrition and health research at the Medical Research Council (MRC), has been commissioned by Fab, the organisation which is recognised as the lobbying arm of the National Association of British and Irish Millers.
The council will be paid £10,000 by Fab for the study, which involves Dr Jebb reviewing scientific literature investigating diets that are high in carbohydrates such as bread, pasta and rice.
Last week she caused consternation among devotees of the Atkins Diet when she said that there was not a "shred of evidence" to suggest that it worked. Followers of the diet are allowed to eat as much protein and fat as they like provided that they cut out carbohydrates altogether.

I can't respond to each one individually. But I can say one thing: you have proved that freepers too are as vulnerable as anyone to groupthink, crowd psychology, mass hysteria and delusional madness.
Surely, Atkins was a fine man. I saw him on Larry King and liked him. A calm, moderate man, with an important message. But to elevate this nice man to the level of a prophet makes you no different than islamic fundamentalists.
If you think this is the ONLY way to be thin and healthy, you do need some serious help.
I'll have a feast tonight with my Greek friends, with lots of red wine and will drink to your health.
Cheers!

No one said it was the ONLY way to be healthy and thin!
Some people ar more susceptible to carbohydrates than others. Those people do well on the Akins diet because it gets rid of the sugar cycle that causes intense hunger and overeating.
I am trying the Atkins diet beginning tomorrow. My husband has been on it two weeks and has lost 16 pounds, plus he has more energy and has now worked up to walking 4 miles a day (something he would never have been able to do until his energy level increased.)
People who have done well on the diet are naturally enthusiastic. I think it a stretch to equate them with islamic fundamentalists, to say the least.

They can get it to work in practice, but not in theory.Theory, in theory, is the same as practice. In practice, theory and practice are completely different. 8>) or something like that.

The Atkins diet appears to be quite a puzzlement to modern scientists. They can get it to work in practice, but not in theory.LOL, now that bears repeating.
I am back on the Atkins diet and having much more success this time around.
I made Shrimp Monterery (based on a Scallops Monterery recipe) this evening and it was delicious!

There ARE different body types. Some do well on Atkins, some don't. As a culinary professional, I have to recommend that my clients do what they need to do to take good care of themselves.

The only problem I have had is at first I didn't seem to have the endurance I had before I started the diet. But after a couple of days I was back to normal. That's a normal lag as your body shifts from being a sugar burner to being a fat burner. About the only negative that goes with Atkins is the dragon breath from the ketone bodies formed as you metabolize fat in a state of ketosis.

Oh, I just remembered that. It is temporary, but no fun for the spouse of the one on the diet.
Ketosis breath, I think it's called. At least that's what I called it.

Your "just a cook". Like Steven Seagal was "just a cook" in "Under Siege". Are you finding your new profession as enjoyable as the old software business?

My wife was on a medically supervised fast. She had 5 packets of drink mix daily. Each had 14 grams of protein and about 5 grams of carbs. Potassium supplements were also included. We went through over 6 months of dragon breath as she pared down from 182 to 127. I took advantage of her "food vacation" and put myself on Barry Sears' Zone diet. My weight loss was slower as a consequence of cancer in 1985. I have to exercise extremely vigorously every day to see any results from even a very carefully controlled diet. Still, I dropped from 204 to 173 between June 1996 and April 1997.

And most important: it's not a great way to live the rest of your life.
And if you stop the weight comes back REAL fast.

Ketosis breath, I think it's called. At least that's what I called it.Correct. It's the ketones burning out of the fat and liver. Ketones have a "special" smell that is repellant to humans. You don't smell it much, these days in the States.

I was hoping for something more erudite like:
kdb /unix /dev/kmem
followed by some interesting manipulations of the running kernel. I sure miss writing UNIX kernel code for a living. I suspect all those senior employees at Sun miss it too. It will be fun to watch what happens when the Sun folks in India send out the weekly patches for Solaris. Will there be anyone left that recognizes what they are or how to apply them? It was tough enough when we had no full time UNIX sysadmins and the task of applying patches was a collateral duty performed by competent programmers.
It has been 30 years since I earned a living cooking at a restaurant. It's a real treat to be the only cook for a restaurant with seating for 350 people. Doing pantry work in your slack time, stoning the grill and cleaning all the grease from the vents at closing was not particularly fun.

A balanced diet put into an unbalanced body makes something still unbalanced. An unbalanced diet equals out an unbalanced system into a balanced organism. People have a weight problem because their system is out of whack and a so called balanced diet hurts them. Atkins is designed to work on malfunctioning systems.
