I wonder if the hotels that took reservations early on, and then had no power, are going to refund all those credit card charges.

Probably. I don't know why everyone wants to think "Terror". Even if it turns out to be human induced, what is there to gain by thinking terror at this point? Panic? It is a side to human nature that escapes me. Reaction to crisis should be calm reasoning and deliberate action. Could you imagine being wheeled into an emergency room, injured but awake. The nurse and the doctor scream and wring their hands. Sheeesh

I always think what a great idea a generator would be if we have a long power outage....and promptly forget it when the lights are on!I always keep fresh batteries for the radio and flashlight ,tho.

I just hope this is solved soon.We Texans know about really hot weather with no A/C!I never think about water and the ability to pump gas being a problem!I'm spoiled and glad of it!

EXACTLY. The auto protection is kept to a minmum to prevent computer failures causing the same type event. In a huge overloaded grid like this one. This is going to happen and it is remarkable is doesn't happen more. A minor event in one part of the system can have fast wide ranging effect. Electricity is very fast.

Good morning everybody. Checking in on this thread sounds like some made it home, some have power back. News coverage is all about the grid needing updated.

Realistically, how achievable is this? I just wonder in terms of financial costs and time needed if it won't probably be a multi-year effort. But I'm not sure Anybody hazard an educated guess?

Beautiful picture. I'm hearing stuff that indicts the environmental regulations that discourage "tweeking" the system to help keep this from occurring. The speaker said the Congress ought to take thr hypocratic oath for energy..First do no harm!

I don't see any mention of Lighting here.

I also don't see any mention of a cause. The transformer that blew was house sized. It took all night to replace. About half a million homes were without power from 4:00 pm to sometime the next morning.

I just got a call from my son at 207th street Manhattan. His lights went on about 8:20 am. He had to walk home from Wall Street last night. 5:00 pm to 1:00 am.
