Hannity station went dead for about 20 seconds. Said he had never seen anything like it.

Do you, or anyone else, know what it takes to restart a nuke plant? I would imagine it is a lengthy process. These would have been emergency shutdowns, is an inspection required?
Just trying to get an idea when production will resume. With that many nukes off the grid, I doubt conventional generators can take up the slack.
Any stationary engineers out there?

I don't know if it is true this time, or not, but the 1977 blackout was EXACTLY precipitated by a lighting strike on agiant transmission line and junction.
To: Mr. Mojo
I've always remained a bit suspicious about that flight that went down in Jersey.
To: Im Your Huckleberry
That makes sense. It explains the cross country outage. The power probably travels in both directions from Niagra Falls.

Oh well, the map shows no storm activity at all northeast.

Lot more probable that a random strike from God could after 26 years precipitate another hugh blackout than a simple terrorist attack.
Guess we've just been lucky for 26 years.

I saw that on Drudge and vowed not to return to his site for a long time. What is he going to do - have a minute by minute tick down like the news did about the hostages held in Iran during the 70's.

the site is live and does have a tiny bit of information on itMy question is how are people in NYC supposed to access the website to get the info?

Regarding lightning, I've surfed the Buffalo sites, and they've had serious storms recently.
To: FairOpinion
Nope, nothing unusual at all.
I see nothing. I know nothing. At least on FR so that I don't get zotted by the AdminModerator and Co.
But if we were in a bar, friend, I could actually speak my mind...and I would.
But for right here, right now, I'm dumb as a post. I'm deaf as a doornail.

All New York Freepers check in - any lightening strikes in your area? Canadian Prime Minister says this was caused by a lightening strike at Niagara Falls.

A big misnomer. What is referred to as heat lightning is merely lightning from a distant thunderstorm...a thunderstorm far enough away that you cannot hear the thunder.

Such thoughts and suggestions of such possibilities are not allowed on this thread, or didn't you know.
Now, repeat after me: "this is NOT terrorism related" and the "anthrax illness was caused because the man drank from a stream".
(/sarcasm)
To: Im Your Huckleberry
Wouldn't a power plant be about the best electrically grounded facility?
I don't buy the Canadian explanation...somebody made a big booboo.

But for right here, right now, I'm dumb as a post. Out of the mouths of babes come gems.

Just the presence of the Guard moving into key positions might have a reassuring, and restraining, effect on the populace. Or just the opposite effect, too.
Especially if the Leftists in the media stir up anti-military sentiment, in any of a dozen ways.
Our experience is, if the Guard gets called for civil disturbance, it's too far gone. We in KYgot alerted in early 2001, for the Cincinatti riots - thought was, the "oppressed masses" might just take it on the road into our state. never happened, and we stood down.

Does anyone else think that Bloomberg is a total flake?
He said things would be back to "normal" in a couple of hours.
Does New York City have a recall procedure? LOL!

I wonder how many western NY Freepers have the electricity needed to check in.

ABC News: A regulatory agency in Canada is now saying it was caused by a fire at a ConEd station in NY.
In other words, everyone has a theory and no one knows diddly.
