Undersea vents possible origin of life

July 24 — In a new study, researchers speculate that a towering undersea hot-water chimney laden with microbes is just the sort of place that might have spawned life on Earth or even other planets.

THE HYDROTHERMAL VENT SYSTEM discovered two years ago has now been found to have endured for 30,000 years. Researchers said similar setups — on Earth and possibly on other worlds — might last millions of years and could have been incubators for the first life. The Lost City, as it has been named, is a craggy column of minerals and microbes sitting 2,500 feet below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean. It is 180 feet (55 meters) tall, higher than any other known underwater vent system and more than twice as tall as most.

UNIQUE SYSTEM Underneath the structure, seawater seeps down into the fractured crust of Earth. There, the decay of one mineral forms another, called serpentine, and releases heat in the process. This process of serpentinization lifts warm water laden with minerals back into the ocean, building the structure.

I hate to be a cynic, but I don't think it will happen - too much $$ made on treatment; cure is a one time thing. ;)

I know =( What I hated was the fact that they made it so touristy - the decent ones were quite expensive, and I'm sure the best ones were off limits

How would you explain a wobbling star (sun)? The hypothesis explored on the show seemed plausible to me.

A wobbling star may indicate a gravitational attraction, but that does not necessarily mean a gaseous blue giant with pink clouds, frozen volcanoes and evolving life.

is it not possible to beleive in a creative intelligence (God), but still the laws of science explain Creation?

As in, God created, we (and all life) evolve?

Aric is familiar with cults. I believe he belongs to one. He said he expects a messiah to show up in the next 3.5 years. Sounds like a ride in a spaceship to me.

Far more possible than something like, oh say, this:

blue giant with pink clouds, frozen volcanoes and evolving life.

They never said anything like that at all. Why are you misrepresenting the facts?

They were merely guessing at what was causing the wobble. The only reason they could come up with is a form of matter is quickly revolving around said star. Since they can detect the star moving side to side (or wobbling) that tells them two things:

1) The thing is moving around the star very fast (once every 4 days).
2) The thing is very big (big things = big gravity).

The only thing we have here, in our solar system, to compare to this situation is our large vacuum cleaner of a planet, Neptune. It happens to be a very VERY large blue gaseous planet with a lot of gravity. If Neptune were to get close enough to our star (the sun), and there was no equally opposing force, our sun would be wobbling too. It would also wobble faster as Neptune got nearer and nearer. They weren't trying to describe in detail the planet causing the wobble. They don't hide the fact that they will never be able to actually see the thing. For 1. it's way too far away, 2. it's always right next to a very big blinding bright sun, the planet is overwhelmed by the star. That's why they only know it's there by the wobble of the star.

I hope you only have comprehension problems and aren't simply being disingenuous to make an otherwise unsupportable larger point.

Worth repeating!

And, just in case you hadn't thought about it, creation scientists are every bit as scientific as evolutionist scientist. But, evolutionist have tried to eliminate them from the discussion by defining what they do as religion. Well, guess what? We look at the same evidence you look at, we examine the same fossils you examine, we observe the same solar system that you observe, and arrive at conclusions based on our presuppositions just like you do.

Speaking of good Research.

Holy Allosaurus!

Facts? What facts? The entire show was speculation save for the discovery of wobbling stars.

They were merely guessing at what was causing the wobble.

That statement is true, although the program declared that 70 planets were discovered. They are suspected by implication but not known. The whole program could have been done in 5 minutes but was stretched to an hour.

That's fine if the DC wants to pass the program off as science fiction. Science fiction is not totally without truth. The problem is, and this is a rapidly growing tumor, that speculation is passed off as truth because the storyteller is employed in some endeavor related to a field of science. The same story can be told by a pulp fiction writer, a big bad bagwan or a stand-up comedian. But when a "scientist" tells it, somehow it becomes true. Now, with the addition of computer animation, we can make any fairy story look like reality.

The program was mildly entertaining, but it was not science.

This is my final post on this thread for tonight.

I find it interesting that you blow off as being "a few hundred scientist" some of the greatest minds in the history of the world: Newton, Kepler, Pasteur, Bacon, and on and on, are not just a few kooks. Say what you will, they are the fathers of modern scientific enquiry. How you, with your puny little mind, can assess them as not worth consideration in this discussion obviates your amazing bias.

So...fertig. Gute nach

Not necessarily true - I think something can occupy little space, yet have enormous density, and generate the same amt. of gravity as a much larger counterpart. I may be wrong, but I believe white dwarfs are an example of this.

"evolution is a cult"

There are some folks here who think that we do not understand the difference between science and religion.

Personally, I'm not so interested in what 'religion' is per se, just the acknowledgment of God The Creator, God The Father, His holiness, His righteousness, and His Son who died on the cross for all of us.

To me, science is a study of what God created for us and allows us to accomplish with His works. Everything we study as 'science' is God's handiwork...we merely uncover His work, and through our unique God given intelligence and free will, we learn, we develop medicines, etc.

When man uses 'science' in an attempt to discredit God, The Creator of all things, that's where I draw the line. Plain and simple.
