The downed Apache had a First Cav. insignia on the side of the craft. They may be there all ready.

It is probably going to be used as the "eyes and ears" for the 4th ID (and perhaps for the 1st Armored, if they come over from Germany, as was discussed prior to the war starting). Similar to what the 7th is doing right now for 3ID and the MEF.

Avn brigade is, at least the apache troops.

Wondering about the heavy assets though. Just seems peculiar that we seem to be running more mechanized infantry than heavy armor.

A couple. My favorite is the Dining In we had in a fest tent within site of one of the E. German guard towers. Pretty humorous to see a Regiment of officers in dress blues mooning the tower. Hard to beat the esprit shown by a bunch of Cav troopers.

Been a long time since I played that. We used to do some of that stuff in the flegdling regimental drum and bugle corp. Alas it was disbanded shortly after it was formed. Long time ago!

Various reports on this have only been posted about 8 times so far today, and a few times a day over the last week. ;)

I wonder why John Robinson doesn't just write some HTML to automatically provide a first reponse to all posts pointing out the fact that the article has been posted previously. Would save a lot of time. Or maybe just include it in a disclaimer at the bottom of the page.

Yeah, we're going to smother them:

US Forces En Route or Alerted

This is a best available listing of the units that have either begun deploying to Southwest Asia, have received a deployment order and have not begun to transit, or have been Alerted to the possibility of a deployment. The list is based primarily off of open-source information gathered from the news media and the military.

The recent increase in deployments has made the task of compiling and identifying units that will be involved in a war with Iraq extremely difficult. The number of National Guard and Reserve activations and deployments are far too many count, though every effort is being made to create as detailed a list as possible. The possibility that a significant number of the Alerteds are false is considerable as the United States is no doubt trying hard to prevent the public and Iraq from determining just how many forces are involved.

The total number of personnel that have either been ordered to deploy or that are on Alerted is roughly 87,500. Currently there are roughly 70,000 Soldiers that have either been ordered to deploy or that are in the process of deploying. There are roughly 3,000 Marines en route to the Persian Gulf aboard 3 major task forces. Finally there are roughly 14,500 Sailors and aviators attached to the various Carrier Battle Groups and Amphibious Task Forces that are either en route to the region, on standby, or that are on surge status. These forces include some 100 aircraft of all types, 16 US Naval Vessels, 41 sealift or cargo vessels, and 597 VLS launch tubes carrying nearly 300 cruise missiles.

These numbers do not include the British or Coalition contributions.

You're pretty much right I think. As I said earlier, my brother in law is a tank commander in the 3rd Armored Cav. and he told me this is generally what their job is, although he wasn't exactly sure what the mission would in Iraq. He left today.

It is truly amazing watching what an Armored Cav. regiment does (CNN is with the 7th Armored Cav.). The only drawback is that my wife and mother in law get very upset and nervous when they see an armored cav. unit in a fight. Not because they don't beleive in the mission, but rather because they can see what he is getting into.

The 1st ID and the 1st AD are the two main maneuver Divisions in Germany, probably not for long, though.
