FREEP Drudge, ask him to remove Disgraceful Al Jazeera pix
me ^ | March 23, 2003 | FO

Posted on 03/23/2003 9:46:22 AM PST by FairOpinion

I apologize for this vanity post, my first.

But I think Drudge overstepped the boundaries of decency by publishing on his front page a picture from Al Jazeera, showing what is purported to be a picture of an American POW.

The Washington Post has an article on it, in case anyone is not familiar with what happened. So far all American Media has refrained from showing pictures of the Al Jazeera video. For Drudge to put up a picture reduces him to well, I rather not say.

Drudge's EMAIL: DRUDGE@DRUDGEREPORT.COM

Arab TV Shows Captured American Troops http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A14406-2003Mar23.html

To Moderator: If you think my post is inappropriate, I apologize and obviously please remove it.

Drudge needs the hits on his website. He will post whatever gets him attention

Bingo. That's his primary purpose and motivation.

"I strongly disagree that this is demoralizing to our troops. They are highly trained professional soldiers."

But they are human.
Why don't you stop and think WHY is Saddam showing these pix?

He did put a link for those who wanted to see the picture: www.drudgereport.com If you don't like his editorial judgement, stop clicking that link...

My complaint is that families had not been notified and Drudge put up the picture. What would have hurt for the names to be released before putting up the pictures? It is the get everything up first that bugs me without regard to who might be looking.

I am not opposed to the pictures videos after them being cleared!

These pictures are going to end up being the worst thing the Iraqi's could do. Now they face a pissed off superior army, and it shows to the world exactly what kind of people they are. It's gruesome, but it's a victory (in the larger sense) for America, and the conduct of free people. It shows exactly how sub-human Arabs/Muslims are.

Let's not pussy-out on seeing this. What, we ask others to put lives on the line and we can't bother to look at the cosequences some pay on our behalf?

Let's not push more 911-like images under the rug because they make us feel ucky like little children. Get on your knees in thankfulness of their sacrafice and get mad for payback!!

There is something unsettling about the idea that every other country in the world, and every sandmaggot who wishes to can celebrate over the images, and the "world's most 'free' country" keeps its citizens in total ignorance and does not think enough of them to allow a choice.

Hear! Hear!

It does revictimize the family and friends.

Revictimize? Psychobabble. You can't even tell the identity of the dead soldiers. Does it revictimize the families of the dead Jews in WWII to see their love ones stacked like cord wood to be fed in the fire a liberated Nazi concentration camps? What about the families of US Soldiers killed in Vietnam?

Thats the problem with the world today no one wants to LOOK at the EVIL.

My complaint is that families had not been notified and Drudge put up the picture

If they had been notified, would that change your opinion?

Many here object to the revictimization (TM-du) argument that the picture is painful, is that not still the case after you know they have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country through official notification?

The picture on the Druge Report caused me to write a letter both to our President and Vice President, so do not say that it did not do any good. This personalizes the war for each of us. As far as courtesy goes, it is nice, but if this was your son or brother or husband, I would think that you have been hurt so deeply that it is just not possible to be hurt any more. Pray for our nation, pray for our troops, and pray for the families who must go on alone without their loved ones. I do not want to see American lives lost just to save the Iraqi infastructure.
I want America to be serious about winning the war, and I want American lives to be a priority, not just some by product of the oil business.

The picture is still up loud and clear, no idea what you mean about White House censorship of the reality of War against a butcher.

Words can be graphic enough, imo.

This is where The Right has totally missed the boat since the TV age began.

Liberals have been very good at using the images of TV and the emotions they engender to advance their pet causes. Conservatives have countered by using reason and dialog, which all too often hasn't worked.

The liberal press knows the power of images, which is why you didn't see the more disturbing videos from the WTC after the first day or so, why you never see images from the abortion chambers, and why the videos of people celebrating when the Taliban was driven from power in Afghanistan disappeared down the memory hole after 12 hours. It's also why you see the aerial photos of the antiwar "throngs" but never those from the Rallies for America.

Conservatives, especially now that they at least have some access to media outlets and the Internet, need to get much more aggressive with their use of images and video. Both the rational and emotional sides of people need to be fed. This is why Drudge is, IMHO, right to run the photo.

Did you miss that they already have signs:
------

"We decided to make new signs today," said Carolyn Burkett, who along with husband, Tommy, hoisted one stating, "Support our troops. Bring them home."

We want the troops to be safe."

The best way to do that, said another DU retiree, Ron Santoni, "is to bring them home."

Saddam is dead.

What we can't all do is go weak about this. These pictures must be showed! To show what kinds of vile sub humans we are up against in Isalm.

Why do you think the Pentagon does not want the images displayed and have requested they be withdrawn from Al Jezeera?

If they were using your logic it would seem the Pentagon would not make such a request because the showing of the tape would imporove the "morale" of the soldiers.
