I am intersted in corresponing with "any sailor" - but -
one aboard a specific boat that I am particularly fond of.
Any one have any ideas how I would go about this?
- - -
I've even thought that maybe I could contact the
ship's chaplain who might identify a seaman that
did not get much correspondence and would appreciate it.
- - -
(this happens to be a very large boat
that is home based in Bremerton, Washington.)

Morning tomkow6. You look marvelous. I got this in email yesterday and thought I'd share with you guys over here.

Marine Penpals http://jollyroger.com/marinepenpals/
THE JOLLY ROGER @ JOLLYROGER.COM

Ahoy there mates! A couple weeks ago the Wall Street
Journal published a jollyroger.com poem entitled "In
The Name of Freedom." If you know any brave men or
women serving overseas, please forward it to them.
Let them know we leave a candle burning every night,
praying for their safe return. Forward this poem far
and wide, and let the world know there are yet
Permanent Things worth fighting for, and that poetry
yet rhymes. And should you come across these words,
send an email to sevenseas@jollyroger.com, and let us
know where you're stationed, be it in the Middle East,
at Camp Lejeune, or in a high school English class in
Wyoming. For we are all soldiers of the spirit, and
the renaissance is yet to be. Let's see how far and
wide poetry can travel, beyond the elite editor's
cynicism, beyond the postmodern fog, beyond the
indifferent who never knew what it was to rhyme, and
who oppose all conflict because they never felt
freedom thundering through their souls.

In The Name of Freedom
by Drake Raft
The night fell fast, I found myself alone,
A DC summer storm was blowing in,
I stood at the tomb, these soldiers unknown,
and knelt and prayed for the rain to begin.
Not for the monuments nor any money,
nor pomp, circumstance, nor the pedant's pride,
the politician's smile, nor lawyer's fee,
for these present treasures, none of them died.
I ran to Jefferson to read the wall,
to make sure that God was still written there,
then to Washington, and across the Mall,
where Lincoln invoked his immortal prayer,
Winded and ragged, lightning everywhere,
I slowed to a walk, pondered what would be,
if God's great Enlightenment weren't there,
we could still be brave but never be free.
I found comfort in the Mall's mud and rain,
without mines nor cannons nor raining shells,
so free from fear, iniquity, and pain,
because thousands had endured a thousand hells.
And I found myself back before the tomb,
humbled by the humbled, with naught for name,
shivering, though they had the colder room,
sans light, nor sound, nor tomorrow, nor fame.
I thought for a moment, what it could be,
the center and circumference of their dreaming,
it must have been the prophet's poetry,
that granted their souls eternal meaning.
So judges and congressmen, please don't forget,
the reason these patriots picked up swords,
not for perks nor power were their deaths met,
but for honor and duty--for mere words.
So do take pause before telling a lie,
for there's one more thing I saw on that night,
as the wind and the rain began to die,
I walked away, turned, and beheld a light.
Wil'O'wisp, reddish light, sailor's delight,
It hovered there--just above the tomb's stone,
As fading thunder whispered to the night,
"Freedom's the name of all soldiers unknown."

Wednesday's weird warship, USS Kearsarge (BB-5)

Kearsarge class battleship
Ddisplacement. 11,540 t.
Length. 375'4"
Beam. 72'3"
Draft. 23'6"
Speed. 16 k.
Complement. 553
Armament. 4 13"'; 4 8", 14 6", 20 6-pdr., 8 1-pdr., 4 .30 cal.

The USS Kearsarge, named by act of Congress to commemorate the famed steam sloop-of-war, was launched 24 March 1898 by the Newport News Shipbuilding Co., Newport News, Va.; sponsored by Mrs. Herbert Winslow, daughter-in-law of Kearsarge's commander, Captain John A. Winslow, during her famous battle with Alabama; and commissioned 20 February 1900, Captain William M. Folger in command.

Kearsarge became flagship of the North Atlantic Station, cruising down the Atlantic seaboard and in the Caribbean. From 3 June 1903 to 26 July 1903 she served briefly as flagship of the European Squadron while on a cruise that took her first to Kiel, Germany. She was visited by the German Emperor 26 June 1903 and by the Prince of Wales 13 July. She returned to Bar Harbor, Maine, 26 July 1903 and resumed duties as flagship of the North Atlantic Fleet. She sailed from New York 1 December 1903 for Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where, on 10 December, the United States took formal possession of the Guantanamo Naval Reservation. Following maneuvers in the Caribbean, she led the North Atlantic Battleship Squadron to Lisbon where she entertained the King of Portugal, 11 June 1904. She next steamed to Phaleron Bay, Greece, where she celebrated the Fourth of July with the King, Prince Andrew, Princess Alice of Greece. The squadron paid goodwill calls at Corfu, Trieste, and Fiume before returning to Newport, R.I., 29 August 1904.

Kearsarge remained flagship of the North Atlantic Fleet until relieved 31 March by battleship Maine, but continued operations with the fleet. During target practice off Cape Cruz, Cuba, 13 April 1906, an accidental ignition of a powder charge of a 13- inch gun killed two officers and eight men. Four men were seriously injured. Attached to the 2d Squadron, 4th Division, she sailed 16 December 1907 with the "Great White Fleet" of battleships, sent around the world by President Theodore Roosevelt. She sailed from Hampton Roads around the coasts of South America to the Western seaboard, thence to Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, and Japan. From there, Kearsarge proceeded to Ceylon, transited the Suez Canal, and visited ports of the Mediterranean, before returning to the eastern seaboard of the United States. President Theodore Roosevelt reviewed the Fleet as it passed into the Hampton Roads 22 February 1909, having completed a world cruise of overwhelming success, showing the flag and spreading good will. This dramatic gesture impressed the world with the power of the U.S. Navy.

Kearsarge decommissioned in the Philadelphia Navy Yard 4 September 1909 for modernization. She recommissioned 23 June 1915 for operations along the Atlantic coast until 17 September when she departed Philadelphia to land a detachment of marines at Vera Cruz, Mexico. She remained off Vera Cruz from 28 September 1915 to 5 January 1916, then carried the marines to New Orleans before joining the Atlantic Reserve Fleet 4 February 1916 at Philadelphia. She trained Massachusetts and Maine State Naval Militia until America entered World War I, then trained thousands of armed guard crews as well as naval engineers in waters along the East Coast ranging from Boston to Pensacola. On the evening of 18 August 1918, Kearsarge rescued 26 survivors of Norwegian Bark Nordhav which had been sunk by German Submarine U-117. The survivors were landed in Boston.

Kearsarge continued as engineering training ship until 29 May 1919 when she embarked Naval Academy Midshipmen for training in the west Indies. The midshipmen were debarked at Annapolis 29 August and Kearsarge proceeded to the Philadelphi a Navy Yard, where she decommissioned 10 May 1920 for conversion to a crane ship and a new career. She was designated AB-1 5 August 1920.

In place of military trappings, Kearsarge received an immense revolving crane with a rated lifting capacity of 250 tons, as well as hull "blisters," which gave her more stability. The 10,000-ton craneship rendered invaluable service for the next 20 years. One of many accomplishments was the raising of sunken submarine SQUALUS off the New Hampshire coast. On 6 November 1941 she designated Crane Ship No. 1, giving up her illustrious name which was assigned to a mighty aircraft carrier. But she continued her yeoman service and made many contributions to the American victories of World War II. She handled guns, turrets, armor and other heavy lifts for new battleships such as Indiana and Alabama; cruisers Savannah and Chicago; and guns on the veteran battleship Pennsylvania.

In 1945 the crane ship was towed to the San Francisco Naval Shipyard where she assisted in the construction of carriers Hornet, Boxer, and Saratoga. She departed the west Coast in 1948 to finish her career in the Boston Naval Shipyard. Joe McDonald, master rigger, described her as "a big gray hulk of a thing" which was "pulled around by two or three tugs" on the job; "But the old girl has brought millions of dollars worth of business to Boston. Without her we would never have been able to do many of the big jobs, that cost billions of dollars." As one example, he recalled that the former battleship lifted a gantry crane intact at the South Boston Naval Drydocks and transporting it to Charleston where she placed it on crane tracks to be driven away. As Crane Ship No. 1, her name was struck from the Navy List 22 June 1955. She was sold for scrapping 9 August 1955.

Now for the weird stuff:

Note the two story turrets. The Kearsarge class battleships were the first to be built with such turrets. Unfortunatly, they were not the last. The design was controversial. Some foreign observers considered it a most efficient concentration of firepower, although no foreign navy ever duplicated it.

Another design flaw was the 13-inch gun mountings. These weapons were set so far back in the turrets that very large gun ports were required. In fact, the openings were so large, an enemy shell could pass through the opening between the gun and turret wall without touching either, making the turret armor almost useless.

Also, there was an uninterupted passage between the turret and the magazine below. A naval officer of the time said that he could sink her simply by tossing a lit match through the large gun port. The match could simply fall all the way to the magazine.

LT William S. Sims said of Kearsarge's sister ship, the USS Kentucky, "Kentucky is not a battleship at all. She is the worst crime in naval construction ever perpetrated by the white race."

In February 1901, LT Sims presented a detailed report of his criticisms of the Kearsarge class to the Navy Department. Not suprisingly, in March Sims was transfered from the USS Kentucky to the monitor USS Monterey in Canton China.

After much arguing and deliberation, historians this week have come up with a phrase to describe the Clinton Era. It will be called:
SEX BETWEEN THE BUSHES.

The Center for Disease Control in Atlanta announced that Clinton has proven that you can get sex from Aides.

Gennifer Flowers was asked if her relationship with Clinton was anything like Monica Lewinski's. She replied, "Close, but no cigar."

The FBI has coined a technical term for the stains found on Monica's dress:
"Presidue."

Clinton now recruits interns from only four colleges:
Moorhead, Oral Roberts, Ball State and Brigham Young.

Did you know that Clinton had asked to change the Democratic emblem from a donkey to a condom? It represents inflation, halts production, and gives you a false sense of security while you are being screwed.

Arkansas is very proud of Bill Clinton.
All these women coming forward, and not one is his sister!

Finally, Hillary Clinton recently went to a fortuneteller who intoned, "Prepare to become a widow. Your husband will soon suffer a violent death!"  Hillary took a deep breath and asked, "Will I be acquitted?"

If you don't understand the Democrats' version of tax cuts (and you are not alone), this will help explain it for you:

50,000 people go to a baseball game, but the game is rained out. A refund is then due.

The team is about to mail refunds when the congressional Democrats stop them and suggest that they send out refund amounts based on the Democrat National Committee's interpretation of fairness. After all, if the refunds are made based on the price each person pays for the tickets, most of the money would go to the ticket holders of the most expensive tickets.

That would be unconscionable.

The DNC plan says:

People in the $10 seats will get back $15, because they have less money to spend. Call it an "Earned Income Ticket Credit". Persons "earn" it by demonstrating little ambition, few skills and poor work habits, thus keeping them at entry-level wages.

People in the $25 seats will get back $25, because that's only fair.

People in the $50 seats will get back $1, because they already make a lot of money and don't need a refund. If they can afford a $50 ticket, then they must not be paying enough taxes.

People in the $75 luxury seats will have to pay another $50, because they have way too much to spend.

The people driving by the stadium who can't afford to watch the game will get $10 each; even though they haven't paid anything, they need the most help.

Now do you understand? If not, contact Representative Nancy Pelosi or Senator Tom Daschle for assistance.

It was the first day of school and the teacher thought she'd get to know the new kids by asking them their name and what their father does for a living.

The first little girl says: "My name is Mary and my daddy is a postman."

The next little boy says: "I'm Andy and my Dad is mechanic."

Then one little boy says: "My name is Jimmy and my father is a striptease dancer in a cabaret for gay men."

The teacher gasps and quickly changes the subject. Later in the school yard, the teacher approaches Jimmy privately and asks if it was really true that his Dad dances nude in a gay bar. He blushed and said, "No, my dad raises money for the Democratic Party, but I was just too embarrassed to say it."

A couple were dressed and ready to go out for the evening.

They turned on a night light, turned the answering machine on, covered their pet parakeet's cage, and threw the cat into the back yard.

They phoned the local cab company and requested a taxi. The taxi arrived and the couple opened the front door to leave their house. The cat they had thrown into the yard scoots back into the house. They don't want the cat shut in the house because "he" always tries to eat the bird.

The wife goes out to the taxi while the husband goes inside to get the cat. The cat runs upstairs, the man in hot pursuit The wife doesn't want the driver to know the house will be empty, so she explains to the taxi driver that her husband will be out soon. "He's just going upstairs to say goodbye to my mother."

A few minutes later, the husband gets into the cab. "Sorry I took so long," he says.

"Stupid b!t%# was hiding under the bed. Had to poke her with a coat hanger to get her to come out! Then I had to wrap her in a blanket to keep her from scratching me. But it worked. I hauled her fat a$$ downstairs and threw her into the back yard !!"
