Recently Andrew Cuomo asked me to contribute to a book of essays on the future of the Democratic Party. I thought I would send it to Andrew through OpinionJournal.com. That way he will be able to see your responses pro and con and perhaps include a few of them in the book, too.

The truth is not Peggy's Version: "You're good people if you'll just get a few things adjusted." No, the truth is more this: "You're thieves and stenographers for thieves. We will not negotiate with you. Get a job." VERY well said. Thank you.

The local version of Pravda West (a Gannett paper, of course), has a RAT writer whose every article has to do with FDR, or greedy and selfish Republicans and how much and why he hates Bush. It never changes from article to article and it exemplifies the asinine messages of RATS of all stripes. They shout the same lies and inanities over and over ("Tax cuts for the rich!") and are repeated to become well past irrelevant. The problem is RATS don't get it and never will.

The Democrats seemed motivated not by general principles and beliefs but only the need to win, which left you protecting your market share by bribing groups you'd once been able to champion. You've become confused as to your purpose, your reason for being. Yes, Republicans have pressure groups too, and the party pays great attention to them. But the GOP's pressure groups are in line with the sympathies of the party as a whole. When the National Rifle Association agitates for its issues, it's agitating within a party that supports the right to keep and bear arms. Good point, right on target.

You have got her number perfectly. It's something that infected Jack Kemp and after a while such magnanimity is just silly naivete. She talk of snobbery, but isn't she practising her own brand, by projecting decency onto Dems who have yet to warrant such trust? I hope she snaps out of it and gets more grit into her writing.
To: Victoria Delsoul
Isn't she just asking them to wise up and switch parties? I do wish she'd stop trying to be so nice to those who hate her guts.It smacks of moral preening.

I honestly have to wonder about the hardcore pro-abortionists such as NARAL and Planned Parenthood. They go far beyond the (ridiculous) "personal choice" view; they talk about how wonderful it is to live in a country in which a woman has "freedom of choice" to murder her baby. PP even had a blasphemous Christmas card saying "Choice on Earth." This is the act not of a normal politician, or even a typical fanatic. This is the act of a sick pervert. I can't help wonder if Gloria Feldt has pictures of murdered unborn babies in her home for her personal stimulation.

Applause, applause! Peggy has taken all of my feelings as a former democrat and given them life with her brilliant writing, as usual. She is the word artist of the century as far as I am concerned. The RAT party will never recognize the truth about themselves. But those of us who left them behind, certainly do.

Gun registration eventually always leads to firearm confiscation.
To: 2nd_Amendment_Defender
Saint Peggy is being praised throughout this thread, when it appears she just slipped in a call to register all firearms.
People need to read more closely.

These days I often find myself wishing she would abstain from the beautiful phrasing and coy circumlocutions and write straighter, cleaner prose. But then she wouldn't be Peggy!

How often do people lvea the GOP to go to the Democrat Party? I'll never forget something that I heard on the local news on the day the electors voted for George W. Bush.
They said that in Louisiana between election day and December 18 (The day the electors voted), that thousands of registered democrats had switched to republican and that hundreds of registered republicans had switched to democrat.
I believe that the democrats' stunts in the 2000 presidential election contributed to their loss in the 2002 elections, along with other factors of course.
