"we will answer every danger and every enemy that threatens the American people.
We will not deny, we will not ignore, we will not pass along our problems to other Congresses, to other presidents, and other generations.
(Take that, Bill Clinton!)
Instead of bureaucrats and trial lawyers and HMOs, we must put doctors and nurses and patients back in charge of American medicine
No one has ever been healed by a frivolous lawsuit.
(Take that, John Edwards!)
there's power, wonder-working power, in the goodness and idealism and faith of the American people
"Power, Power, wonder working power", lyrics from an old gospel hymn.
I ask you to protect infants at the very hour of their birth and end the practice of partial-birth abortion.
Iraq, Your enemy is not surrounding your country -- your enemy is ruling your country. And the day he and his regime are removed from power will be the day of your liberation.
as we and our coalition partners are doing in Afghanistan, we will bring to the Iraqi people food and medicines and supplies -- and freedom"
A truely great speech! I was very surprised that he went into as much detail as he did with specific evidence of Iraq wrongdoing. That's what I get for believing the pre-speech spit and spin.
And the United Nations was established for what cause again? Not that I support them in many causes at all, but good grief some of those countries have to have money!! While it is a worthwhile cause, and a good one, to help others, the national government does not have the constitutional power nor is its role to use our money in such a way
I propose a $450-million initiative to bring mentors to more than a million disadvantaged junior high students and children of prisoners. Government will support the training and recruiting of mentors; yet it is the men and women of America who will fill the need. One mentor, one person can change a life forever. And I urge you to be that one person
And the 450 million is to go to what? To teach people to do what they should be doing all along? Helping others?
Another cause of hopelessness is addiction to drugs. Addiction crowds out friendship, ambition, moral conviction, and reduces all the richness of life to a single destructive desire. As a government, we are fighting illegal drugs by cutting off supplies and reducing demand through anti-drug education programs. Yet for those already addicted, the fight against drugs is a fight for their own lives. Too many Americans in search of treatment cannot get it. So tonight I propose a new $600-million program to help an additional 300,000 Americans receive treatment over the next three years
Ah, the wonderful world of the federal war on drugs continues. Again, not a power under the Constitution. I do not believe in legalizing drugs however it is the responsibility of the states to police their streets and arrest lawbreakers
In this century, the greatest environmental progress will come about not through endless lawsuits or command-and-control regulations, but through technology and innovation. Tonight I'm proposing $1.2 billion in research funding so that America can lead the world in developing clean, hydrogen-powered automobiles
Thanks but no thanks George. I like my gas guzzler and I don't want to give up performance for a bunch of greenies. There's plenty of petroleum in Alaska. Go get it.
Look, while I have questions about the war on Iraq, in principle I do support this war and pray for President Bush, even with the misgivings that it may lead to some issues in a generation or so with the Russians and Chinese. But in principle, for getting rid of Hussein I fully support the Armed Forces of these United States. However, what happened to cutting back the national government's footprint on the citizens of the respective states? And with an additional 17 billion and counting exactly how big is this tax cut going to be?
The Empire marches on, flame away
This is the line that will be sticking with me. Having painted a picture of evil he took the twits who think that snarking about cowboys with a black and white vision of the world makes you sophisticated and shoved their faces right in it.
One of my favorite lines from the speech.
distinguished citizens and fellow citizens
On the biggest questions, life and national security, the speech, and the policies it sketched look very good indeed.
It's a pleasure to be in sympathy with, and proud of, our President tonight.
Cheers,
Richard F.
