More on Robert 'KKK' Byrd whom Tip O'Neil nicknamed 'Sheets' on Rush's website:

The ex-Klansman's admirers praise his historical knowledge, mastery of procedural rules, and outspokenness. They refer to the Senate's senior Democrat as the "conscience of the Senate." They downplay his white-sheet-wearing days as a "brief mistake" - as if joining the Klan were like knocking over a glass of water. Oopsy.

This ex-Klansman wasn't just a passive member of the nation's most notorious hate group. According to news accounts and biographical information, Sen. Byrd was a "Kleagle" - an official recruiter who signed up members for $10 a head. He said he joined because it "offered excitement" and because the Klan was an "effective force" in "promoting traditional American values."

The ex-Klansman allegedly ended his ties with the group in 1943. He may have stopped paying dues, but he continued to pay homage to the KKK. Republicans in West Virginia discovered a letter Sen. Byrd had written to the Imperial Wizard of the KKK three years after he says he abandoned the group. He wrote: "The Klan is needed today as never before and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia" and "in every state in the Union."

The ex-Klansman later filibustered the landmark 1964 Civil Rights Act - supported by a majority of those "mean-spirited" Republicans - for more than 14 hours. He also opposed the nominations of the Supreme Court's two black justices, liberal Thurgood Marshall and conservative Clarence Thomas. In fact, the ex-Klansman had the gall to accuse Justice Thomas of "injecting racism" into the Senate hearings.

The ex-Klansman vowed never to fight "with a Negro by my side. Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds."

Here's the formula. If a conservative is embarrassed, it makes the front page, full story. If a liberal is embarrassed, it plays deep inside the paper, just an item in a column.

Let's write letters & keep after the mdia to report the above facts about Byrd!

how many times Lott says, "You know" during his ramblings.

I'll go with 9, and something like, "I have friends who are African-American."

p.s. I replenished the Pepto-Bismol supply in preparation for Algore's SNL appearance tomorrow night. Got any exta spiders?

You are correct that Thurmond has moved on since 1948, or even 1964, and has at least politically accepted the reality of the end of segregation. Good, and it's to Thurmond's credit. He's not the one standing up saying the country should have elected him for the views he had in 1948! Lott is.

"I don't think the Dems will ever learn. I'm hoping that ULTIMATELY people will be 'on' to their tactics. If enough comes out about the racist actions/comments of Dems like Senator Gore Senior, Bill Clinton, Sen. Byrd, etc, then this SHOULD backfire on the Dems"

To tell the truth, this Lott thing shows that Americans aren't being as easily taken in by this as they used to be. It's the DNC socialist club, the media, the political has-beens (like Gore) and the psychotic Hollyweird types that are manufacturing and blowing this up....mainstream America, while it wants to see the right thing done here IF this is all true, seems to be reacting to the media with caution. Which is GOOD.

You're absolutely right: the BEST way to combat this latest tactic in the Dem war on the Republican administration and party is to keep telling, over and over, Hillary's anti-Semitic remarks, Je$$e's, Bubba bulldozing down an African American landmark for his lie-brary, Algore's bigotry etc. EVERY time an anti-Republican brings this Lott thing up - and they will, every few months, even after '04, we have to slam it down with the TRUTH. Uploading copies of Lott's remarks and other evidence to sites on the web will be a big help too.

That's like a German leader praising a repentant Nazi by saying, "We'd all be better off if you had won WWII...", then explaining, "you've got me wrong, I was talking about his CORE values: patriotism and law enforcement..."

If States' Rights and Strom haven't changed since '48, well, I've been riding at the back of the wrong bus.

You miss the point, but you are in good company.

Lott's commendation of his fellow Senator was not a endorsement of segregation. We passed that point long ago. This frenzy is improperly dredging up old and antiquated policy and is playing the race card in order to destroy a man's credibility by association to a dead issue!

The only people advocating segregation in todays world are not white.

Let the Dems be the party of hypocracy on race issues. We need to be above reproach and prune away anyone in our leadership who makes such egregious mistakes. Lott's statements cannot be interpreted innocently unless you do a Clinton tongue-parsing.

The discussion about Truman in your link is eye-opening.

It looks like Truman, Byrd, and many other Democrats of their day built their political base on the burning crosses of the Klan and after they "made it" in DC turned their back on their supporters when it was time to "go national".

The Rats "Republicans are the Racist Party" just won't survive scrutiny.

Great link/

I think you miss the point: it's not as if this were Lott's only lapse of this kind. He said something similar 20 years ago, and back in the early '60s he helped keep Sigma Nu all white. It's a pattern, whether he is a racist or not. It's a pattern of insensitivity at the very least. The Republican Party has to be purer than Caesar's wife on the racism issue and we cannot defend anyone, such as Lott, who doesn't get it.

And a pattern painted by a false media god that you have bought, hook, line and sinker!

I'm already copying and saving things stated by Dems. Fuel for the upcoming fire.

I just hope Sen. Lott states "enough is enough". His words were taken out of context..and that is that. He should quote Sen. Carl Levin who also spoke at Sen. Thurmonds party. Also praising his run for presidency. (I need to find his comments to add to the wood bin). :o)

I think Sen. Lott needs to QUIT apologizing!!! This is exactly where I think he tends to whimp out. He should state the comments made by others, people in the Dem party, which were obvious and definelty racist!! But he won't. He should do so in a nice way.. like "Maxine Waters once said that the people rioting in LA should quit doing so in their own neighborhoods,.. and they should go to white neighborhoods".. he should point out how Sen. Byrd called people "White NIGGERS".. and then go on to politely state.. "but we know they didn't mean it the way it came out" "I never meant what I said in the way it is being interpreted, and my record and actions of the past prove it" "I'm not going to resign over this incident,..and I'm not going to continue this feeding frenzy".

Enough is enough!!

Then, in about 4 to 6 mos.. I hope someone else does out him from the leadership position. We've advocated his removal from the leadership for a long time. But I don't feel he should step down under these circumstances. I never want to give the extreme left that much power!!

FRegards FRiend!!

Lott doesn't have much credibility to lose. It's the Bush administration and Republican party they're after. They want to regain POWER over the people of the United States. They need VOTES to get it. Lott's already a weak link...so they're just weakening him further.

The conservative movement is now full of weak kneed pollywog's!

All you have to do is mention the word race, and they run for cover!

Screw them all!

Yep. Just look at this place. Eight or ten people defending Lott; the rest are just nursing grudges from impeachment and using this non-racist comment as a pretext to get Lott out.

This whole thing is pathetic. I look across and see people I formerly admired standing alongside Maxine Waters.

According to the radio just now, he's not quitting.

Sounded like a blowhard, and we will pay for his sorry ass over and over and over.

I'm toying with registering Dem just so I can help conservative candidates along.

When I spoke before I was repeating what I had heard. So I have now done a Google search to get some information.

It appears there are no longer all black colleges.

Here is an interesting read.

What is a Historically Black College or University
