A Few of FR's Finest.....
......Every Day

FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders;  tell a few jokes;  learn a new word;  write poetry;  pray for those in need;  and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.

Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   I can remember lurking when there were only a few regulars who posted, and now there are over 60,000 who have registered for posting privileges. The forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001

So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I can no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I've been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.

Still that doesn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why, in addition to seeing FR's Finest Military Personnel every day, I thought it might be fun to feature a different FReeper (or FReepers) each day. If you would like to be pictured, or know someone who would, please FReepmail me and we'll turn the spotlight - on YOU - for the day!

And do let me know if you'd like your picture added to the groups of Veterans/Active Military below. I will keep this page updated, and continue to add them to the comment section of the original Veteran's Day thread as well.

HOLIDAY TOP-TEN-LIST CONTEST
by FreeTheHostages and Mudboy Slim
Graphics and layout by Billie

HEY YOU!!
Yeah, YOU! We're talking to YOU!!
Ever said to yourself, "My posts here are so clever, so nice, shouldn't I win a prize for them?" Good question!
Here's our answer to this question: Maybe yes, maybe no. Let's find out! THE HOLIDAY TOP-TEN-LIST COMPETITION HAS COMMENCED!!!
Another Freeper Finest Contest Thread!! With a REAL PRIZE: Your Chance to Win a Copy of the Clinton Legacy Cookbook!

Top Ten Reasons You Should Join the Contest
10.  You have to play to win: must post by 10 PM PST tonight! Multiple entries accepted.

9.  The judging will be completely irrational (FreeTheHostages and Mudboy Slim!), so your chances of winning are no less than the next person's. We'll probably have Honorable Mention designations and such.

8.  Did we mention you get a *real* prize mailed to you - a copy of the Clinton Legacy Cookbook? This is a long time in the making, a work of love by Carlo3b with the help of many Freepers and his beloved Angelique. A $20 value, you can have yours free!!

7.  You pick your theme for the top ten list, as long as it is somehow vaguely tied to the holidays.

6. It can be funny. It can be serious. It's whatever you want. For example:
"Top Ten Excuses for Not Doing One's Holiday Shopping"
"Top Ten Things Santa Should Put in Daisy Scarlett's Stocking"
"Top Ten Things I'm Getting the Freeper Finest Hostesses for Christmas"
"Top Ten Reasons Why Hanukkah is Better"
"Top Ten Things President Bush Wants for Christmas"
"Top Ten Reasons Why I'm Looking Forward to Christmas In America"
"Top Ten Cute Things Mixer's Puppy Could Wear on December 25th"
"Top Ten Holiday Wishes for the Families Who Lost Loved Ones on 9/11 / in Vietnam/ etc."
5.  If you don't join the contest, and the top ten list that wins reads like it was written by a reptile, it will be too late for you to say, "Sheesh, my five-year old son could have done better than that."
4.  There are so many different ways you can make your list "count" and make your fellow Freepers laugh or smile. Cuteness countess. Patriotism counts. Humor counts. Sincerity counts. Everything counts. Clever counts a lot.
3.  Here on FR's Finest, your literary work will be read and, if you're a regular, you know that your Finest friends will find something nice to say about it, even if you do submit a list with the theme:
"Top Ten Things I'd Like to Give My Ex-Boyfriend for Christmas - the Guy Who Dated Me For Five Years But Would Never Go So Far as to Commit to Suggesting That I'm the One Until He Broke Up with Me (He Claims) Because I Seem Unhappy About Something."
You just know that some cheerful Pippin or Aquamarine or Mixer will stop by your post and say, "Well now, isn't that lovely!" with a big smile.

2.  If you run out of ideas before you get to 10, there are always amusing ways to fill out your list.

....and the number one reason you should enter our contest:

(Drum roll please)
1. Because you *just know* you're so clever someone *ought* to give you a prize, right?

The Rules

1.  We don't have 'em. Your judges, FreeTheHostages and Mudboy Slim, aren't big on rules.
Holiday Helpers
So we're not having any. We're guest-hosting this thread to help out the regular hosts this holiday, so we pretty much figure we can all do what we want and will dispense with the rules. Think of us as your substitute teachers for the day! That said, of course it would be immensely useful, if when you post your entry, you would ping your judges - FreeTheHostages and Mudboy Slim - along with whoever else you wish to ping. This will let us keep track of the entries.
2.  If you want to ask us about whether there's a rule on this or that, feel free, but you'll find our answer is "there's no rule." Can you work in teams? Sure. Can you steal from a couple of the best entries of a peer? Sure, although the judges are not likely to be impressed by such behavior. Can you use graphics if you wish? We don't see why not.
3.  What is our specific grading system? We don't have one. Do you have a legal recourse if you think the judging result indicates someone had too much buttered rum? Nope. Etc. etc. Get the general idea? :) You're putting your contest fate in the hands of the unrestrained discretion of the judges - whose work, if you've seen us on the gingerbread thread, certainly is laughable. So there should be no shame in losing.

The Suggestions

We do suggest you:
  • Post by midnight PST.
  • Consider bribes or flattery. We're into that.
  • Be patient if you win. We'll mail the winner the
Clinton Legacy Book     (signed by Carlo3b!) as soon as it arrives in the mail to us.  There may be about a week's delay due to the holiday mail, but you WILL get your book before Christmas!

The Motivation

Our prize is a gem of a prize. Carlo3b describes his labor of love, the Clinton Legacy Cookbook, as "The only item to escape the Clinton Administration without DNA on it!"  Makes you hungry right away, huh? ;)
If you really hate cooking, just the names of the recipes should be fun reading. But still if you'd rather, we have an alternate gift - a 2003 Wall Calendar with the theme: "Proud to Be an American."

Our Expectations

Now, you were all smart enough to find the FR's Finest thread. And so we do have the greatest expectations that *every* entry will be just wonderful. So, thinking caps on, everyone!   Embrace competition like a good conservative and ........... to work!
~ FreeTheHostages and MudboySlim

Once again, I'd like to thank our Guest Writers (and Judges) for providing me with another entertaining script to 'play with' and 'pretty-up' for our Finest FReepers. You've made the holidays such fun with your delightful and humorous writing; the prizes you've offered in these two contests are an added bonus! Thank you both for being such an important part of our Finest Family. ~Billie

2) Once there you can click on any month and even click to the right to go into next year. Once you are in the month that you joined FR you will need to click on the number in the calendar and then an add item screen will come up.
3) In the next box enter your name in the "Calendar Text" field and then click on submit.
4) If any of the screens fail to load simply click on refresh in your browser and that will usually fix it.
5) If all else fails or simply if you want me to do this for you send me an FReepmail and I will gladly do it for you. ~Mixer

THE JUDGES' ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE WINNERS

Well, let's recap the thread. It began with the pledge of allegiance and it was all downhill from there. We even had some posts removed by the Moderator!! OOPS. Hee hee, it will be a cold day in Hell before we're allowed to co-host again, huh? But we did our best, obviously on the lighter side of a website that deals with some important and serious issues. But it's the holiday time and we thought y'all could use some mindless fun. Speaking of mindless, your judges now announce their thinking:

First: Jwfiv. Second: Mixer and Pippin. Third: DaisyScareltt.

First place: Jwfiv's new to graphics but he's not new to writing. We learned that last week. And here's a lovely photo of our President and First Lady and a reminder -- which this thread sorely needed! -- of what the holidays are about. We said you could be serious, and our winner was. We give you first place, Jwfiv. And he remembered to bribe us afterwards at posts 139, 140, separately, so Mudboy and I wouldn't have to fight over who got what. Impeccable.

In second place, Mixer and Pippin. Mixer wins the first second place award for prevailing in the for the cute photo duel at Mixer's Post 42, barely eduging out WvNan's post in the wrong thread. We're not even going to describe these two pictoral threads. They're both so equally fine and humorous. The pictures do the talking. We just couldn't chose between them. So just take a look and you see what we mean. We went with Mixer's puppies -- WvNan, you were very close in this category, but it's as if you posted in the wrong thread on purpose and pretended to lose some photos in order to keep your post from being official and thus achieving your goal of getting an award for Pippin. So you lose, as I suspect you planned, on a technicality, which is going to work for:

Pippin, who also wins a second place award. Pippin's entry is the most resourceful and spontaneous and, as WvNan correctly notes, original list of the day . At post 54, the drama turns to Pippin, who's being teased by her liberal co-workers on her political views. She takes matters into her own hand and dreams up a lovely top ten list of things she'd like to give them for Christmas! And not to forget the bribe, the number 1 was of course an anthology of Mudboy Slim's rewritten Christmas carols! This quick-thinking action under pressure, this turning of lemons into lemonades, wins our Pippin a second place prize award. And what a good illustration of the importance of Freeper's Finest: someone conservative to talk to when you're alone in a world of liberals!

Third prize. I have to say, we finally got someone who got the hang of the bribing thing. DaisyScarlett had it all, something for everyone. It was all about gift-giving, this time of year, and Daisy was most generous. She looked out for us, and now we have to look out for her. To our Daisy, both for the gifts and for keeping her mouth shut about what actually went on here today in case the other hostesses don't have time to check, we do award her third prize. Only to her! She's the only one who doesn't have to share. Mudboy adds: "Plus, Ms. Scarlett looks very allurin' in a strapless evening gown..." Sheesh.

1/2 of First Place Award to Lodwick

LOL, Don't EVEN ask. Mudboy Slim wants Lodwick to get first. And there are good arguments in favor of this. Lodwick was everywhere. He was everywhere. He was lawless about it: careful to break at least one rule (since we didn't really have any) at each post. He posted so often we can't select just one as *thee* reason for winning. His posts were hilarious. Mudboy and I of course disagree on the artistic significance of his swimsuit model series. But we all do agree that his 16 (yes, not 10) reasons why alcohol should be served at work is a sample of the mayhem he caused here. He also remembered to bribe us. But I think he gets winner status disqualification when the admin moderators have to pull some of his racier posts later at night: the law is the law. Mudboy Slim responds that unless Lodwick would please mail him those photographs of bathing beauties for Mudboy to consider further, it's hard for Mudboy to be firm about the disqualification. LOL!! So, with the judges basically tied on the question of whether having admin moderators pulling the posts disqualifies you, and with FreeTheHostages acknowledging some merit to Mudboy Slim's position, and it being about 2 a.m., after sustained if barely comprehensible phone discussion on this topic, the judges agreed to disagree and Mudboy Slim is going to arrange some sort of half-of-first prize award for Lodwick! LOL. Hey, did we warn you we'd be erratic. I think we DID. What is a "half of first prize" award? We don't even know yet what it is that Lodwick's won! But sincerely, from both judges, thanks for playing. (Pretty weasely of us, stuffing 5 winners into 3 slots!)

Honorable Mentions

The Most Funny post Honorable Mention goes to Balata's 8-minutes to spare Strum Thurmond top ten pick-up lines. Couldn't give it an official prize since it didn't have a lot to do with the holidays here and, well, could possibly offend some (Balata, I just add that because now everyone's sure to read it!). But it was very funny!

A special Honorable Mention goes to the Cutest of many cute threads. There was just nothing cuter that JustAmy's contribution.

The Thin Man's contribution wins of course the Post Modern Nihilism Award. Check it out. Lodwick accurately tagged it with one word: "brutal." Sorry, Flyer, it was close, but Thin Man's post was slightly more nihilistic than yours!

Best Advice Post for the Holidays surely goes to Aquamarine. How to handle your food!

Best international post goes to Happygal, who said some things we'd actually admit to agreeing with if we weren't jingoistic Americans! :D Merry Christmas to our Irish friend!

The booby prize

You'd think this would go to one of several curious entries we received which basically said "don't pick me!" Hee hee. But no. Our booby prize goes to Dutchess, who had a great top ten list about Freeping. But the title, top ten reasons why one should quit, hit too close to home for your exhausted judges! (Remind me to do this just ONCE next year, OK?!)

Dear winners, cc: Billie and Mudboy:

Yes, the prizes are real! Unfortunately, since we have more than one second place and also this "half of first place" lodwick thing (ROFL!, what *is* that? -- Mudboy, it's your job to prize that one -- perhaps the first half of a calendar or half of a book?), I'm short a prize.

But the prizes are definitely real and you definitely get them. Jwfiv wins the Clinton Legacy Cookbook.

Pippin, mixer, daisyscarlett: what do you guys want? I think what I ought to do is go buy some more cookbooks from Carlo3b. Y'all want cookbooks? Would that work for you? Or does someone instead want a lovely 2003 "Proud to be an American" Wall Calendar? Just speak up in this thread and we'll sort it out.

Lodwick, I loved your stuff. You helped out all day. I was just looking for excuses to get rid of anyone on our winner's list, and the Admin thing -- which, I know, Mudboy's the good libertarian, he points out it should be a badge of honor in this context -- well, it was my excuse.

But I *do* want you to know that if you want one of those Clinton Legacy Cookbooks, without at all agreeing that you are any kind of official prize winner, I'd be happy to slip you a copy. :)

If we'd had a room for a *sixth* winner in a contest that was just supposed to be 1, 2, and 3, you'd have been there. But there's a limit to how weasely even we can be!

You and Flyer never won but Honorable Mention in these 2 threads, yet you both really were highlights of my experience. So really thanks to you both.

Merry Christmas. God Bless.
