A Few of FR's Finest..... ......Every Day
FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders; tell a few jokes; learn a new word; write poetry; pray for those in need; and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997. I can remember lurking when there were only a few regulars who posted, and now there are over 60,000 who have registered for posting privileges. The forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001
So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I can no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I've been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.
Still that doesn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why, in addition to seeing FR's Finest Military Personnel every day, I thought it might be fun to feature a different FReeper (or FReepers) each day. If you would like to be pictured, or know someone who would, please FReepmail me and we'll turn the spotlight - on YOU - for the day!
And do let me know if you'd like your picture added to the groups of Veterans/Active Military below. I will keep this page updated, and continue to add them to the comment section of the original Veteran's Day thread as well.

Welcome to Maine
the way life should be
home of one of fr's finest
SheLion
Freeper since 7-28-01
SheLion and her husband, FReeper MaineRebel, hail from Ohio. So how did they end up in the beautiful state of Maine?
As noted below, MaineRebel served in the U.S. Army from 1964-1968. Upon discharge, he and SheLion were married. He got the "itch" to go back into the military and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1970. MaineRebel became a career military man and SheLion, a military wife.
After much traveling, including a five year tour-of-duty in Germany, they received orders to Loring Air Force Base, Maine, in 1983. They packed up their van with their little daughter, two cats and a Doberman and off they went. Loring is between Limestone and Caribou. WAY up north. In fact, Caribou is the most northeastern city in the U.S. It is a three and one-half hour drive north of Bangor, a six hour drive north of Portland and a ten hour drive north of Boston.
They purchased a home right off base in 1984 and settled in. SheLion obtained civilian employent at Loring Air Force Base and was there until the base closure in 1994. MaineRebel retired from the military in 1992 and has been a Government civilian employee with DFAS (Defense Finance Agency Service) on Loring since 1996.
In SheLion's Words:
"What with the world situation, I am very thankful to have remained this far out of the mainstream of the crazy world we live in. We could never go back to living in a big city again. Can we say Window Bars? Heh!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"MaineRebel"
MaineRebel was Active Duty Military for a total of 26 years. He was in the U.S. Army from 1964-1968, serving in VietNam from June 66 until July 67 (6BN 27th Artillary). He received, not one but, two Purple Hearts for injuries sustained while serving in VietNam. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1970 and retired in 1992.
Thank you for your Service, MaineRebel, and WELCOME HOME!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SheLion's political views are best expressed in her words:
"I was never political until the Clinton years. I hate to say this, but I was registered DemocRAT. Ugh! But I would split my ticket a lot. Well, during Clintoons area, I switched pretty quick".
"During the Presidential Election, during all that Florida debunkel, I was literally on my KNEES! I know we have some RINOS in office, but I would vote for a trained monkey if he was Republican over a DemocRAT any day. This might not be smart. I am sure there are some good Democrats. Hope you understand what I mean. We have some Maine Republicans who sit on the fence and are, IMHO, RINOs. I fight with them a lot."
"Maine is very liberal. Desperately liberal. With the Internet, we are trying very hard to get the word out to the Maine Freepers and to have them spread the word as well. Maine has to pull out from under this deep dark funk we are in. What with Independent Gov. King for 8 years, and now DemocRAT Baldacci taking office as our next Governor, its not going to go well the next four years. But, sad to say, hitting rock bottom is what Mainers need to maybe wake them up. Baldacci has been marching in lock step with Clinton for so long, that he could care less about Maine. He just wants that seat to sit in power and control over a whole state."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SheLion is an advocate of the freedom of choice to smoke. Once again, in her own words:
"Ah! Smokers Rights Advocate. Well, sometimes its hard to talk about, because smokers have been made to be the most evil people on earth. And I am working very hard, along with many others, to bring it back around to where we ARENT the devils children. I have been fighting for Freedom of Choice since 1990. In early 2001, I found web sites of like-minded people and was pointed to Forces International. I started corresponding with the leaders, and in August of 2001, I became Forces Maine. My Forces Maine site is posted on my about me (Profile Page) at Free Republic."
"When I was on my own, all I could do was write letters to newspapers and the lawmakers and just rant. But, after much research and countless hours of searching the Net for information, and through Forces, I now have the facts to stand behind me. What with all the bans across the United States, it is now becoming a private property rights issue. The Government wants our money, as you can see by the high taxes imposed upon us, but they are now restricting us, controlling us and banning us. Well, like we say, if tobacco is that deadly, why dont they just ban the darn stuff. Nope! Its about control and its about the money."
"I have a cartoon showing Uncle Sam sitting on a milking stool milking a cow with one hand, and his hand on the rope to release the guillotine with the other. The poor cow is saying, 'I wish he would make up his mind.' Very sad. Very true."
Enjoy Your Day, SheLion!
Guess I just thought that Maine used to be solid Republican. Oh daisyscarlett! I thought you meant in a "column in FR." I got confused.
Well, the last Republican Governor that Maine had was Governor Kernan. He is the husband of Senator Snowe.
He took the fall for the previous Governor, and only served one term. Along comes Independent King, and Maine voted him in, twice. He is a Democrat in Independent clothing.
Maine, being in New England, leans heavily toward the DemocRAT side of the house. We have been working very hard to change that. A lot of Mainers are in a rut on the other side of the house, and I am not sure why they aren't trying to get out of that rut and make Maine a better place to live.
The whole US voted Republican in this last election, except Maine. I just can't understand it. Now we have to put up with 4 more years with a DemocRAT Governor, and I have had run-ins with him before. It's not a pretty picture.
Good morning, Mo1. Thanks for all the neat graphics you brought us today. Hope things are well in Pa. and do get us a photo of your Kelli for the Christmas pet card, or should we use the one you posted on the Finest when it was your day last week?
You are going to get harmful bacteria effects from only a few ways. First, the meat, fresh, clean right out of the packet, has bacteria, possibly even harmful types on it. Nothing you can do, it is mother nature. Ditto your cutting surfaces, plates, etc. The problem is from the amount of bacteria, or in other words, the concentration. This is what cleaning is about, not making things sterile, and you can't, but reducing the concentration below harmful effects.
So, basically if the meat is clean, from a good place, etc, then the few hours out will not allow the counts of bacteria to reproduce to harmful levels. Just as the meat is coming up to a temperature where bacteria can begin to multiply, and even that would take many, many hours, well you have beat them by putting the meat on the grill. Furthermore if after patting down when cold, if you oil, spice and especially salt the meat, then you are making the surface less hospitable for bacteria reproduction.
Anyways, I'm clean, youre clean, and not to worry and I am with the French on this in their regards to the treatment of foods.
The best part is the effect of non cold meat to the cooking/grilling process. Instead of the heat being sucked up by the ice cold slab, the heat begins to sear and seal the outer layer, sealing in the moisture and thus you are more likely to get that crispy, tasty sear outside and the moist, steaming inside. Yum, Yum.
Great states like Maine usually have an abundance of great clipart on the net...Here are some that we wanted to use but just could not "fit in"...I mean, like, we really wanted to highlight you and MaineRebel in the Profile, not the state of Maine, lol....
Oh man, that lobster salad looks like something right up my alley, with mayo, no less and I hope it is not the non-fat mayo...lol....Thanks.
Look forward to steamed lobster for tonight...Lobster tails would be great-they're not as messy...Lots of drawn butter, but of course...hee hee
To: Leisler
No mercy for the fowl - everything marinaded in Allego Hot&Spicy sauce (which surely must whack any burgeoning bacterial activity), brought to room temp, seared at 600 degrees and then brought down to 400 till done - ten minutes each side...and I can freep away and not worry about a thing.
My best grilling investment was a high quality bi-metal thermometer installed in the dead center of the grill's lid. The Low, Medium, High thermometers which come with most grills are way lame for any kind of precision cooking.
These are beautiful photos. I think lobsters are gorgeous, that's why I can't handle a big dead one on my plate "looking at me." hehe!
But when they are all chopped up.......YUMMY!
I hate having to work at eating - maybe that's why I'm a fan of shrimp or anything that doesn't require a ball-peen hammer to get at.
