Orlando gays puzzle over gay candidate who is also a Reagan conservative
By Mike Schneider The Associated Press October 28 2002
ORLANDO -- Republican leaders were in a quandary after reapportionment changed House District 36 into a Democratic bastion with a fifth of the population either gay men or lesbian.
With GOP incumbent Allen Trovillion leaving the Legislature, they thought it would be impossible for the GOP to again win the district, which encompasses downtown Orlando and the metro area's urban core.
But then the Republicans found party member Patrick Howell, a preppy, photogenic 32-year-old attorney who is both fiscally conservative and fond of quoting Ronald Reagan.
He also happens to be a gay man.
Howell's candidacy has stirred a debate among Orlando's gay men and lesbians about whether a candidate's sexual orientation should be more important than his political orientation when they go to the polls. His Democratic opponent, Sheri McInvale, is straight.

Real diversity is when different ideologies are represented, so that good, honest debate may take place as politicians search for the solutions that will best benefit society. This is the form of diversity in which Leftists have absolutely no interest. It's why the gays won't vote for the gay guy if he's conservative and why Harry Belafonte belittles Colin Powell's accomplishments.
The only group that opposes diversity is the Left.
I guess more than anything else it's a form of bigotry, and it plays directly into the D's strategy of interest group politics.
I lived next door to a couple of gay guys once. Both of them voted for Ronald Reagan, both times, because, "Carter and them guys don't know how to run a business let alone the entire federal government."
It's amazing how casually those RATS drop the Nazi analogy. They constantly compare Republicans to Nazis, the Klan or whatever. You would think that Republicans routinely march Jews into ovens and lynch black people. But let anyone accuse them of being pro-Communist (no matter how accurately) and they immediately scream "McCarthyism!". The irony is that McCarthy was 90% right, and certainly never killed anyone. The left OTOH slanders conservitives with false accusations all the time, but unlike McCarthy it never hurts their careers.
You bet. It's always interesting to remind Leftists that, while the US didn't march anybody into ovens, we did put people in concentration camps -- and the President who did it was a Dem. Also, the lynchings and Jim Crow laws that the US experienced in the past were tactics used by the Democrats to maintain their authority in the South.
But somehow, the Republicans get blamed for all the evil in the world.
Here is the photo, you be the judge. As mentioned in the article, the web site recently added a line indicating the woman is Howell's campaign manager. Also, if you look carefully, you'll notice Howell is crossing his fingers behind his back.
The word "Nazi" is a contraction for Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (NSDAP). In English that would translate to National Socialist German Worker's Party.
Socialist Workers. Hmmm. Yeah, that sounds very right wing to me. Try again, Rats.
I think this is a wonderful example of the extreme arrogance of modern American leftists. Look, millions of Germans throughout the 1920's, 1930's and 1940's thought that the National Socialist Workers Party was a (wait for it!) Socialist Workers Party Hah! What suckers! Apparently they had no idea what the party stood for!
Of course, the wonderfully wise American Leftists of the current age see through this right away. They understand that the Nazis were right-wingers. They know better than the Germans who actually lived through the Nazi period.
Hitler was evil - no doubt about it - but is was not because of his economics; it was for many other reasons.
I disagree with you. This viewpoint presupposes that Germans in the 1920's were politically naive. "I am a socialist, that is why I support the Socialist Party -- you know, the party that wants to prop up capitalism and oppress the workers. Socialism forever, that's my motto!"
The Germans had a rich stew of parties to choose from: Trade Unionists, Socialists, National Socialists, Communists. If Hitler called himself a National Socialist, but was not in anyway a Socialist, he would have been a laughingstock -- it would have been a dumb political move on his part.
Look at the Nazi's goals: control all aspects of society, re-invent religion, marriage and education so as to completely re-invent all social aspects of life. Outlaw dissent, smother the population with propaganda.
Sounds like typical left-wing goals to me. I consider myself right-wing because I want government to largely stay out of my life. Respect the rule of law, do only what is really necessary and let people run their own life. Does that sound like the Nazi philosophy?
Nazis were left-wing. By policy. By name. By action.
Real diversity is when different ideologies are represented, so that good, honest debate may take place as politicians search for the solutions that will best benefit society. This is the form of diversity in which Leftists have absolutely no interest.
