Here's my situation: Within the next year I will be getting and making a PCS move. I am considering a bunch of different bases at this time, and trying to figure out what my top choices should be. Could some of you vets or military family members please tell what you think about the following locations:
1. Colorado Springs, CO
2. Fairbanks, AK
3. Anchorage, AK
4. El Paso, TX
5. San Antonio, TX
6. Ft. Drum, NY
7. Ft. Irwin, CA
8. Fayetteville, NC
9. Columbia, SC
10, Ft. Stewart, GA
11. Ft. Hood, TX

I'd go for Anchorage or the Springs. But then again, I love mountains and cold weather. I'd kill myself if I were stationed in Fayettville. Went there TDY quite alot. Talk about an armipit.

Amen to that. Ft Hood is in Texas. Which is as close to heaven on earth a man can get.

I loved Anchorage, but it depends on what you like--people either love AK or hate it. El Paso is decent if you like desert. Colorado Springs is nice and offers more for the family.
I would go with Colorado Springs, Anchorage, Columbia, El Paso, Fairbanks... But all of it depends on your specialty. Talk to people in your field. Thanks for serving and hope you enjoy your new station.

Stay very far away from Fayettville !!!
We were stationed at the AF Academy in Colorado Spgs. for 2 years and it was one of the nicest places we had ever been !!!
Little nippy come winter time, but beautiful !!!

Brand X....
Fayetteville is too much a military town. The military overwhelms the area. Colorado springs is the place for this young man.

Soldier...
Pay no attention to these people that are trying to lure you to Alaska. I live in NC, Fayetteville does not cut it. El Paso is a dog, San Antonio has the purttiest girls. (you still allowed to look)

"Take Anchorage or Colorado Springs...stay away from Fayetteville"
I was at Camp LeJeune (amoung others) and Fayetteville was always refered to as FayetteNam if that is an indicator

To tell the truth I have never been to any of those places.
Personally, I would choose Ft. Stewart.
I know someone there and I hear and intend to verify that the Savannah area really knows how to celebrate St. Patricks Day!
See you in March!

FWIW, one of the variables you listed was junior officers quaters. Here in Colo. Springs there has been a multi phased junior officers quarters building program. They are about half through and have some excellent junior officers quarters on the golf course in the shadow of Cheyenne Mountain with some fantastic views.
As far as the other variables you mentioned I don't think you could beat this area anywhere with respect to those catagories.
Being ex military and having been born and raised in this area I would be happy to help you with any additional concerns or questions of interests you may have for this area.
Good luck, and thank you for your service to our country.

Spent a year and a half at Ft. Bliss (El Paso, TX). Take a hint: they don't call it the arm pit of America for nothing.

I've lived in NC for a while, been to Bragg many, many times. It's not bad, but Fayetteville is a TOTAL dump. As badly as I wanna be airborne, Fayetteville makes me think twice about requesting Bragg. Been to Stewart quite a few times as well. Nice post, nice people, REALLY freakin' hot in the summer, and REALLY freakin' cold in the winter. So if you're a grunt like myself, you'll be hating it, but it's not bad from the kick-back-and-relax standpoint. I've been to Ft. Jackson a couple of times and it seems pretty decent as well. Don't know about Ft. Irwin (yet). Ask me by the end of next summer and I'll let you know...NTC here I come...
