It cost me $23.97 for everything, including tax.

But maybe not so great a bargain when you start adding up the other costs. The antibiotics for that chronic upper respiratory infection. The unscheduled physical to see what's wrong. The x-rays. The biopsy. The radiation treatment. The chemo. The wig for when your hair falls out. The new wardrobe for the new, 30-pounds-lighter you. The loss in your job productivity because you're so tired. The gas and time spent seeking alternative treatments. The fees for getting your will updated, and your affairs in order. The 24-hour nursing care those last few weeks. The plane tickets so your loved ones can say goodbye. The funeral home costs. The burial plot. The casket. The granite tombstone, engraved with dates that are too close together.

This moron is bragging about how much money he's saving on a habit which will kill him. The ultimate case of being penny-wise and pound-foolish.

Hey genius, if he never smokes another cigarette he won't die someday? How do these costs apply to smoking? He is going to have all of the above his last days if he is lucky.

Opps! If I read the story correctly, he states he does not smoke. Buying the stuff was research for the article.

I have to agree. I quit cold turkey in March, 1986 and haven't smoked a single cigatette since. Prior to this event, I smoked red Winstons, then Winston Lights in a gold package, then Winston Ultra Lights, that had so many air perforations I was mostly drawing air in anyway.
The day before my last cigatette, I had been out seeing customers and had gotten home late and went to bed. I awoke at around 1 am, coughing from too many smokes. So, naturally, I got up and looked for my shirt with cigarettes in the pocket. Found the pack with just two left. I decided if I smoked one right then and the last one when I got up, I would try to hold out as long as possible. I think this promise to myself was like self-hypnosis; the next morning, I smoked my last one (and didn't tell anybody what I was up to, to avoid the "how're you doing without the cigs" routine). It was three months before anyone noticed I was cigarette free, and, by then, it was no big deal, and my friends offered words of encouragement, not challenges on if I could keep it up.
I think it took a full five years before I quit reaching for my cigarette pack, tho. and I had to make some changes in other habits (bars after work were out--too many smokers). But that's how I whipped the habit.

We are ALL moron's in one way or another. And I have never suffered anything that you have enriched upon.

We all die from something. Even you won't get out of this world alive.

Could easily make the same argument about fatty foods"

The cost of all the diet pills and fly by night diet plans, The unscheduled physical to see what's wrong. The caridograms, the cholesterol screening, the liposuction, the stomach stapling. The new wardrobe for the new, 30-pounds-lighter you, and then back to the gain over 30 pounds back.

Should we go after people who eat to much?

I waste all kinds of money as well on things that are detrimental to my life and health; fast motorcycle sometimes even without a helmet (ohhh the horror), experimental homebuilt airplane, jeep with no roll bar, car with no seat belts.

Why can't we just leave stupid people alone to be stupid? Why do we feel we have to control their lives?

Yo start dying the day you are born, no one has found a way around it yet.

If the cigerettes don't get you, the smog will, as will all other things such as over eating, over drinking and the rest.

Why don't you grow up?

Number one, if you had passed reading 101 you would have seen where the author states he does not smoke.

Number two, you need to go back to grammar 101 because of your improper use of the word WILL. This word implies an absolute and there is no definitive proof that smoking WILL kill anyone. Everyone makes choices in their lives, some good others not quite.

Whether you choose to believe it or not - you personally are going to incur many and possibly all of the same costs you are claiming will only be incurred because someone smokes. Stop being ridiculous, life is 100% fatal to all who live it.

Hate to break it to you, but, EVERYONE will eventually have to buy these things.

The article was about how smoker's are giving the finger to taxes. Last time I checked, conservatives were supposed to be against unnecessary taxes.

Never had one--will have to assume you're the expert in chronic upper respiratory infections.

Do you realize that 75% of cancers occur in nonsmokers? What do you blame for that? Or is it just that all their expenses, pain and suffering don't count because they don't smoke?

The fees for getting your will updated, and your affairs in order. The 24-hour nursing care those last few weeks. The plane tickets so your loved ones can say goodbye. The funeral home costs. The burial plot. The casket. The granite tombstone, engraved with dates that are too close together.

"too close together?" Compared to what? Do you--like other antis--consider those 70,000 85-year-old-plus smokers who die each year "premature deaths"? How about the 140,000 who die after age 75? Premature?

This moron is bragging about how much money he's saving on a habit which will kill him. The ultimate case of being penny-wise and pound-foolish.

Unless you can guarantee that not smoking will keep someone alive--and healthy--forever, you're just blowing smoke. Yes, I smoke and make my own for about $8/carton.

How do you know smoking will kill him? I am a non-smoker. Never have smoked. I cough when I am around any smoke. Never-the-less I have read that about 96% of smokers die of old age and never get cancer. There is danger in driving a car, liquor, meat, and so many other activities too numerous to mention here. Why do you repeat the tired old Leftest lie about tobacco? All they want is the money from tabacco sales to spend on Socialism and Anti-Americanism.

The loss in your job productivity because you're so tired.

I'm in a plant that has been laying people off based on productivity. I'm one of the few non-smokers left. Smoking increases alertness. Go figure.
