WHY DOES THE MEDIA CALL OUR PRESIDENT MR., NOT PRESIDENT BUSH??
VANITY | SELF

Posted on 09/29/2002 12:21:46 PM PDT by STARWISE

Is anyone else confounded and angry about the media having seemingly all jumped on the bandwagon of referring to our President as "Mr. Bush?" I don't know who started it .. probably the Clinton News Network, but they're all doing it now. Was there a meeting among them all or what?

I frequently hear Klintoon referred to as President when he's spotlighted, or "former President Jimmy Carter." Am I paranoid or have the respectful protocols for referring to our President changed while I was sleeping ..... or in the shower?

I think you're a little oversensitive... as far as I can remember it's always been ok to call the President "Mister". What gets me is when they just call him "Bush". That's rude.

Well, whats really rude is when they call him shrub, dumbya, etc.etc. but that's another topic for another thread.

I think when addressing him, it's proper to say "Mr. President".

WGN Radio in Chicago says former President Clinton and calls the current President only Bush.

So I find myself listening to a different radio station more and more.

The title "Mister" is proper WH protocol and has been for many years. Even the Wall Street Journal uses this title and I would find it hard to accuse the editorial board of that daily liberal.

They are trying in their petty ways to insult the President. Shows how very petty they are and how they live for their pettiness.

Ignore it and don't notice. It will show them that we don't pay attention to their stupid little games.

In fact, I had barely noticed until you mentioned.

to accuse the editorial board of that daily liberal.

D'oh.

"to accuse the editorial board of that daily of being liberal." vice the nonsensical fragment above.

Presidents have always been addressed as "Mr." so that's perfectly okay from an etiquette point of view. However, "Mr. President" is also an option, but one rarely used by the press when dealing with Bush, as far as I can determine.

And in third person references, either "Mr." or "President" is acceptable - but I'd bet the press only uses "President Bush" when there's absolutely no way around it.

As far as I know "Mr. President" and "Mr. Bush" are fine. Technically, the former emphasizes the office, the latter the current holder of the office.

What creeps me out is how the talking heads, even on Fox, refer to Al Gore as "Vice President Gore" or "the Vice President". Sorry, I must have fallen asleep. What ever happended to Cheney? Isn't he still the VP? I thought it was customer to refer to former Presidents and VP's as "the former President", "the former Vice President", etc. When did that change?

I think that President Bush could put a stop to that real soon by making it an issue ..... However, he probably has wisely chosen to lay it aside for now.

I just read Bias by Bernard Goldberg and the media are proven to be a bunch idiotic clowns addicted to insipid game playing and childish name calling. Moreover, they do not have an ounce of courage or honesty in their bodies. Especially Dan Rat-ther ....

I give ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN about 4 more years. They are melting down like the "Wicked Witch of the West!"

Snicker .... and a quiet snort.

As far as I can remember, I never referred to Clinton as either "Mr." or "President." I think either is okay for President Bush, but I tend to use "President." I guess many of us use "President Bush (43)" when we need to distinguish between the president and the former president. I don't watch the mainstream media enough to know what they are doing.

Oh, arent' they though? It's fun to watch. Just great fun to watch. They no longer dominate the channels. There are fresher, younger and more intelligent journalists out there and they are nipping at the heels of these Jennings, Brokaw, Rather and so many others. Watch out you guys, you are about to be replaced by the YOUTH of America.

Seems like nearly every liberal pundit, and many Congressional Democrats refer to the President as "Mr. Bush" on TV. Rememeber that Bill Clinton infamously set the example by referring, in a 1992 debate, to George Bush using this name in his presence, a remarkably insulting gesture.

The WORST is the liberal pundits who referred last week to "President-elect Gore": "He IS the President-elect, he just hasn't been sworn in yet", a Democrat state legislator said last week.

Democrats are committing sedition and treason on a daily basis, but don't expect old softies like Lott and Hastert to call them on it. As David Horowitz has said, Republicans do not have the "fire in the belly" required to defeate Democrats at their own game.

This is true, but there's more to it. In an article on a thread earlier in the week, President Bush was constantly referred to as 'Mr.' while in the same, Sadaam was referred to as President Sadaam..' and Gore was referenced as 'former Vice President Al Gore'.
