Erskine Bowles, State Democrat Party Forced to Pull "Misleading" Ad; "Admitted Liar" Scott Falmlen Up to Old Tricks Deceiving Seniors

(Raleigh) - Erskine Bowles and the North Carolina Democrat Party launched the first negative attack ad of the U.S. Senate general election on Tuesday but were forced to pull the ad later in the day after the Charlotte Observer complained that it was "misleading."

"Erskine Bowles is lying about Elizabeth Dole and, given the fact that Scott Falmlen was involved, it's not surprising," said Bill Cobey, Chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party. "Scott Falmlen has lied to seniors in Florida, lied about his lies and now he's doing it all again here in North Carolina. The only thing that truly surprises me is that Erskine Bowles would associate himself with a guy like this."

The deceptive ad came just one day after the North Carolina Republican Party learned that Falmlen, executive director of the North Carolina Democrat Party, had set up - and then lied about - a scam to deceive senior citizens during Florida's 1994 gubernatorial election. Like Bowles's new attack ad, Falmlen's scam involved lying to senior citizens about then-Republican nominee Jeb Bush's position on Social Security.

In the latest attack ad, which was underwritten by the state Democrat party, Erskine Bowles makes completely untrue statements about Elizabeth Dole's position on Social Security in a thinly veiled attempt to scare North Carolina's senior citizens.

The Associated Press reported last Monday night that the ad included "a photograph of Dole, the top of The Observer's front page and the words: 'Gamble Social Security Money in Stock Market.' Dole never made that statement, and The Observer never characterized Dole's proposal as a "gamble." Jennie Buckner, editor of The Charlotte Observer called the ad "misleading." ("Democrats pull Dole advertisement after complaints," The Associated Press, September 17, 2002)

"We have no doubt that Erskine and his pal Falmlen will have an equally deceptive replacement for the ad up and running in no time. But now that they've shown their true colors, North Carolina's seniors will see through their deceptions," Cobey said.

In 1995, the St. Petersburg Times called Falmlen "an admitted liar" for his role in the campaign scams but Falmlen preferred to be known as someone who conveyed "purposeful misstatements." ("Mr. Falmlen, the door," St. Petersburg Times, December 22, 1995)

Instead of being apologetic for his Social Security scams, the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel reported that Falmlen "defended the calls as 'purposeful misstatements' and said candidates do it all the time." (Michael Griffin, "Ethics Panel Blasts Political Chicanery," Sun-Sentinel (Fort Lauderdale), February 21, 1996)

If that wasn't enough, Falmlen went on to lie about Bob Dole in the 1996 presidential campaign with a mailing which, according to the St. Petersburg Times, said "If you need nursing home care, Bob Dole wants your spouse to have to sell the house before you can qualify for Medicaid." In this case, it was his own party who had to reel him in. Amy Weiss Tobe, spokeswoman for the Democratic National Committee, said Falmlen's mailing "may be a slight overstatement of the facts." (Julie Hauserman, "Flier Brings Up Democrat Scandal," St. Petersburg Times, October 26, 1996)

In November 1998, The Orlando Sentinel reported that the "Florida Democratic Party jettisoned [Falmlen] ... in an attempt to reverse its fortunes after a disastrous election season." The Sentinel went on to say " Florida Democrats have witnessed a steep drop in their stature under Falmlen's watch." (David Nitkin and Linda Kleindienst, "Florida Democrats' Top Campaigner Is Out," The Orlando Sentinel, November 21, 1998)

Former Florida DNC mischief-maker's working for the Democratic party in NC...surprise.

Jeb's a survivor.

Don't get mad, get even.

Yes, and it is sad that "old people" fall for all kinds of scams, whether from dishonest roofers or dishonest Democrat politicians.

Yes, and it's sad that with 65+ years of experience, some don't seem to learn a thing. "There's no fool, like an old fool."

Then, some do. We call them real stateman, mentors, ...

I was basing my observation on "and The Observer never characterized Dole's proposal as a "gamble." Jennie Buckner, editor of The Charlotte Observer called the ad "misleading."

I don't think I've ever heard of a newspaper characterizing a political ad as "misleading".

All the ususal suspects are crawling out from under their rocks. Scott Falmlen is a despicable liar- any candidate who hires him, and pretends not to know his reputation, is just as big a liar.
NC voters- beware!

One thing I have not heard yet from candidate Dole is her position on privatizing social security. Anyone know?

Probably not since she has stated very few of her positions. In fact, the only firm position i have heard her take on anything is she wants people drug tested before they can get a drivers license!

I had not heard of this man until I read about him in a Washington Newspaper Monday.

I live in North Carolina and I hope the news gets out about this character. I do hope he IS NOT in our state.

If this news report is true, then it tells us how desperate Erskine Bowles is.

I have read a news article that reported Scott Falmlen is now in North Carolina running the Democrat Party and
doing his best to help Erskine Bowles. The article went on to read, I wanted to make sure you know a bit
about his background so you can be prepared for some of the most
underhanded
and intentionally misleading campaigning you've ever seen.
"Falmlen is responsible for setting up ? and then lying about ?
thousands of phone calls to senior citizens during the 1994 gubernatorial
election here in Florida. The callers told seniors that Jeb Bush opposed
Medicare and wanted to abolish Social Security ? assertions that were
intentionally and blatantly false. Another set of calls, made by callers
from
an organization which didn't exist, attacked Jeb for being a tax cheat, of
all things ?
He persisted in his denials until he was made to appear before the Senate
Executive Business, Ethics and Election Committee's hearings into the
calls.
He finally admitted that his denial had been a 'purposeful misstatement.'

You might be right, however it doesn't do much good to raise a stink against the RAT lies. The media won't report your response, or if they do they will slant it toward the RAT with a he says she says spin.

From LN's #20:

Martin spoke on a panel entitled “Scaring Seniors and Stealing Elections.”

He said the Chiles campaign paid $360,000 to purchase 684,000 names and phone numbers of seniors in 7 key Republican counties, targeting Jeb Bush supporters, telling them Bush will “take away Medicare” and that the calls were from the Florida Association of Senior Citizens.

And the Florida press claims that Jeb's using attack ads when Jeb simply tells the truth? GRRR. It wouldn't hurt to remind the Florida press what the Dems. have done to us in the past.

Unfortunately, the NC race appears to be one of those Tweedledee/Tweedledum situations where the Constitution will get hammered regardless of who wins.

I believe what I see. Just because someone writes something/says something pleasing to the current voter doesn't mean there won't be many "oh, I changed my mind" votes when elected. We've really been handed two diamonds haven't we?

Note from FReeper yoe to me on a thread I posted:

Democrats are a strange bunch especially their leaders. They complain about politics of personnel destruction when that is how they try to divide the country. They have little pride in America, it seems that the American people serve for their pleasure only. If you don't cotton to the democratic line, you aren't American. They used the surplus for other countries and other people when there was much to do here at home. They take our best technologies and sell them to nations that will use the knowledge against us. They lack an enormous amount of integrity and don't seem to care as they flaunt sleazy ethics and morality in our faces.

We didn't have a government for the people under the Clinton administration, what we had was a Democrats Only need apply type of government and now they are attempting to replace a People's Government with their tired old arguments about an education system they didn't fix in 8 years, a health care program they messed up and couldn't fix in 8 years, a social security system they say needs fixing and did nothing about it in 8 years when in reality that system is fine as long as lawmakers don't spend the money that social security is meant for; they spent 8 years hiring federal workers with no qualifications as long as it meant a democratic vote leaving behind a dumbed down, bloated army of sleazy federal laborers who have plundered their departments of millions in dollars and equipment.

Democrats seem to have no respect, no real base from which true justice can spring, only justice that bends for them. They have no enthusiasm for country/nation, no pride, just the spoils from a rich nation for the DNC. They continue to huddle with shady and corrupt people both here in America and abroad for reasons that only benefit them. They are elitists and exclude the real Americans as they race for the Marxist Utopia they have dreamed about...where individual successes are discouraged in favor of a commune like population. They have learned nothing from failed socialism or failed communism; they still want to live like kings all the while painting a glowing picture of togetherness for the masses who work for them. It is called Slavery, servitude to a few at the top, domination over the people through higher taxes and rules and regulations. Democrats want a Unionized nation/world of bondage and they can surely have it by dividing the country with the deceptive lies they and the press propagandize with daily.

Stand tall Americans and stand firmly for the principals of our Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, both of which are like the fabled Vampires silver cross or spike to the leading democrats, they don't want you to have either; it is these people who would return this country to the quagmire of corruption of the Clinton/Gore/Reno years.
