Which State is the Armpit of America?
Arthur Wildfire! March

Ok fellow freepers. The aristocracy had fun deciding which 'hick town' was the armpit of America. Naturally it had to be rural and conservative. A tad redneck.

They were way off the mark. I would have picked New York prior to 9-11. I mean, good grief. Hellery's husband pardoned bomb terrorists to get her elected, the scandal is exposed to every New Yorker and they elected her anyway? She was silent on the issue for at least a week. But well, perhaps NY had been reborn in blood. So, I'm tempted to give them a pass.

Arkansas? Could that be the armpit of America? The home of NationsBank, Tyson Chicken, Walmart, Web Hubbell, and the Big Creep himself?

Then there is the delightful state of New Jersy, which is batting a thousand at elected scandal-swamped senators. Not only the Torch, but also Corzine.

Some might choose South Dakota. Not only do they keep re-electing Timber Tom [also called Rushmore Daschle], but they also go three days without brushing their teeth. So many choices....

West Virginia is a beautiful state. I'd say that it is the most beautiful state east of the Mississippi in terms of whole-state beauty. A natural treasure.

Okay Hollywood guy. Time to go back to your illegal alien infested, morally degenerate, overly socialist state known as California.

If there were a conservative arm pit it would likely be Mississippi. Don't get me wrong, I love the people there, but much of the state borders on 3rd world status. Especially the side along the river. It's hot, flat, and depressing.

New Jersey is the nastiest state I've ever been to. The urban centers are atrocious, the countryside isn't that pretty (aside from the hills in the northwest), and the pols are either liberal dems or worthless RINOs. The people are rude, arrogant, and foul-mouthed...and what's worse - they move here.

CA gets 2nd place because of its impact on the rest of the country. If you subtract the counties connected to the bay, along with Santa Clara and Los Angeles counties, you still have a state which only cast 51% of its votes for Bush, 48% for Gore or Nader. Beautiful scenery, high-paying jobs, but I would be miserable out there.

If Chicago were placed according to your criteria, it would most likely rest in Western Tennessee, perhaps Mississippi.

The Alcatraz self guided tour is good. If you're interested, try getting out that way some time.

Joe, Alabama is a fairly conservative state. As far as physical beauty goes, I'll agree, California has Alabama beat, but the sugar white beaches of the Alabama gulf coast are beautiful.

I'll give you that the Pacific Coast Highway is one of the most beautiful drives, if not the most beautiful, in the country.

The eastern end of Baton Rouge is fairly nice. The area headed towards New Orleans along I-10.

In the winter time, you'd be saying the exact opposite, as Florida would be enjoying mild, comfortable weather and Michigan frigid conditions.

Southern California, Santiago, Chile, Perth, Australia, Capetown, South Africa and the Mediterranean. Which is the sixth area with a Mediterranean climate?

Paul, I think that most of the public schools are indoctrination camps. Though the teachers may not be pushing their garbage, the textbooks are doing it for them. I live in Georgia, and at many of the schools that I have subbed at, you're presented with a left-wing education via a textbook.

I've driven with 45 of the 50 states, and I think that most states are great, though there are parts of many of them that I don't like.

What I don't understand is why these Latin Americans come to our country, only to wave their motherland's flag whenever they win a sporting event. They're often supporting the other team against the United States, and if their team wins, they have to go flying their flag on their vehicles.

Tampa to Orland is a boring drive? It's no more than a little over an hour. Furthermore, they're building up between the two cities. The Lakeland-Winter Haven area has grown up immensely. A drive void of anything is I-10 in West Texas, from just west of the Texas Hill Country to El Paso, though the Hill Country to Fort Stockton drive is one of the lonliest stretches of highway in America. The only thing to come close is I-94 in western North Dakota and Eastern Montana.

I also forgot to add the I-70 eastern Utah trek as being another lonely section of highway.

Did you see my original post? I actually was referring to the drive from Fort Lauderale to Tampa, which is kind of boring, no matter your route, via Alligator Alley or the Turnpike, around Orlando. But it is FAR from the most boring drive I've ever taken. (again, Ohio gets my vote there). I was responding to another poster re: Florida.

And I think parts of Kentucky are much more beautiful than West Virginia. (But then I lived in W.V. for a while, which may have colored my perception.)

Actually, southern culture is the most unique cultural aspect that America has. What other region of the country has as rich a history of culture, food, life, etc.? Alabama is a beautiful state, too, though California probably beats it. However, Alabama's slogan is, "Please Help Keep Alabama the Beautiful".

San Luis Obispo County seems like an island on the coastline, sitting in between very liberal counties. (Okay, I'll give you Ventura County. It is not that bad.)
