FR Current Events Project: Keeping Tabs on the Media's Attacks on Bush and the Republican Party
All Media Sources | July 10, 2002

Posted on 07/10/2002 6:35:37 PM PDT by Howlin

I have honestly lost count of all the lies and distortions being thrown about in the press these last few weeks concerning Bush and his agenda, and the things going on in and around this country, especially concerning the government, the DOJ, and the Congress.

I would like to use this thread -- and you other Freepers -- to compile a COMPLETE THREAD of all the various errors we find in and among the articles we read on here and the news shows that we see daily on TV.

My thoughts are that if we get them all on one thread, maybe we can figure out what the heck is going on in this country and, more importantly in my opinion, WHO is doing it.

Please include the URL for the article or news report you will add to the list; if it is not from a thread on FR, please copy and paste the article, along with date, time, and source to this thread in order to preserve the information.

As always, be careful which newspapers/magazines you post full articles from.

I believe we are in a full frontal fight for the life of this country, the Supreme Court, and the things we believe in. We need to prepare ourselves to refute all the distortions being continually spewed over the airwaves and in the papers of this country.

Now, get to work!

By the way, your thoughts and speculation are WELCOME on this thread. Maybe together we can figure this out!

Here's this local story...they do mention Sen. Evan Bayh, too, though...although this story would be most damaging to Rep. Anne Northup (R-KY) who represents Kentucky's most liberal district.

I was just talking to Miss Marple last night about a battle plan. This is a great start. We have to do more than just list things, though. We need to fight back by going after the advertisers of the lying shows, making phone calls, sending emails, sending letters - in other words, give no peace. We also have to go after people like larry klayman and help show everyone just what scum he is. We are the Presient's warriors - and as he always says, "We have been called to action."

Good idea. Count me in. Could Jim Robinson give us a button for our continuing thread? This source will give us a launch pad for contacting Congress, media, et al.

My thoughts on who is doing this? I think it's a confluence of interests. The Arab world is pissed that we're still going after Iraq, the UN is pissed that we won't play their ICC game, the european countries are pissed that Dubya doesn't lick their boots like Billy used to, the democrats are pissed that they have NO ideas. That's some pretty powerful interests.

We can at least START here, before we lose some of these posts and articles; after we start, then we can decide as a group where to go and what to do with it.

I just do not want to lose the facts as they are printed or said.

Somebody will come along smarter than I am who can figure out where to take this........LOL.

We need to LIST all the things like the ICC attacks, IMO. Sometimes some of them get lost in all the "noise."

OK, we'll also need to organize the list as we go, and pull together the links.

I don't think its really any different to anytime during the Clinton Years. It became so completely exposed. The media are a de facto arm of the Democratic Party. They do its bidding, and all they concentrate upon is political maunevering.Complex matters like business and War leave them cold, but hot juicy things like politics are their catnip.

To them, 9/11 was an abberation. It was only a speed bump to slow down their water carrying for the Dems. Why do they lie? Because its what they do.And its all in the name of politics.

You want me to use the Take Back the Senate ping list which has evolved from the Bush/Cheney list?

This is a great idea. While we are at it -- we need any information that links Klayman/Perot/Clinton together or anyone else that might be involved with that trio. If anyone has any of that information, please Freep Mail me and I will give you my email address!

This is just another way to try and take the issue of the children away from the President and his Wife. What in the world would Chelsea know about raising children! Unbelievable

Cheney praises Arthur Andersen in 1996 video
July 10, 2002 Posted: 9:12 PM EDT (0112 GMT)

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A 1996 promotional videotape has surfaced that features Dick Cheney praising now-disgraced Arthur Andersen LLP for going above and beyond routine audits for the company he ran for five years.

The oil services firm the vice president once headed, Halliburton Co., is being investigated by the Securities and Exchange Commission for the way it accounted for cost overruns on construction jobs during Cheney's tenure. Cheney and the company were sued on Wednesday by a watchdog group alleging fraudulent accounting practices, a suit the White House dismissed as lacking merit.

The Wall Street Journal obtained a copy of the video, which can be viewed on the Internet. On the tape, Cheney and six other executives applaud the accounting firm.

"One of the things I like that they do for us is that, in effect, I get good advice, if you will, from their people based upon how we're doing business and how we're operating, over and above the, just sort of the normal by-the-books audit arrangement," said Cheney, who headed Halliburton from 1995 to 2000.

The four-minute video was produced by Andersen in 1996, well before the company was damaged by revelations about its role in such corporate scandals as the collapse of Enron Corp. and WorldCom Inc.

In May, Andersen was convicted of obstruction of justice by shredding documents that had to do with Enron, which admitted it exaggerated profit to appeal to investors.

The video became available as President Bush demanded new penalties for corporate wrongdoing to restore public confidence in the stock market.

A spokeswoman for the vice president said Halliburton had no reason to question Andersen at the time.

"Arthur Andersen was Halliburton's accountant for 50 years," said Jennifer Millerwise. "Obviously, they had never had a problem, so of course under those circumstances the vice president, along with many other CEOs, did a piece."

Millerwise said Cheney was unhappy that Andersen identified him as "vice president" in a recent copy of the video.

"It's inappropriate, and they did not ask our permission," she said.

The video features another executive whose company is now under an SEC investigation: Peregrine Systems' former chief executive, Steve Gardner, who left soon after the company fired Andersen as its auditor. Peregrine Systems said it may have overstated revenue.

David Rubenstein appeared on the video praising Andersen for not collecting its fees right away when he first started his company, The Carlyle Group. "They carried us for quite a while," Rubenstein said.
