A day in the life of President Bush (photos); 6/6/02

In what can be called a massive restructuring and combining of government agencies, President Bush addressed the country this evening and outlined his proposal for elevating the Department of Homeland Security to a cabinet position. In this new cabinet position, the following agencies will be consolidated into one mission, homeland security: the Coast Guard, the Border Patrol, the Customs Service, Immigration officials, the Transportation Security Administration, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. In addition to sharing information among all of these different agencies, the Department of Homeland Defense will be charged with four tasks:

1. To control our borders and prevent terrorists and explosives from entering our country.

2. To work with state and local authorities to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies.

3. To bring together our best scientists to develop technologies that detect biological, chemical, and nuclear weapons, and to discover the drugs and treatments to best protect our citizens.

4. To review intelligence and law enforcement information from all agencies of government, and produce a single daily picture of threats against our homeland. Analysts will be responsible for imagining the worst, and planning to counter it.

The President urged Americans to call their representatives and encourage them to support the plan. Enjoy your daily dose of Dubya!

San Diego is ALWAYS wonderful! ("America's Finest City") :-)

Okay okay, you know I am jealous already! One of our most beautiful cities and you are darn lucky to live there!
The bad thing is, I am so used to the Central Valley heat, I would freeze in SD in the summer! :)

I missed the President's speech and it's taken me all night long to catch up on the Live Thread and the Dose ...... *pant!pant*

On the Live Thread several people said that it came out in the *post-game* show that neither Karen Hughes nor Karl Rove knew about the plans until last week. We know that the President hasn't had time to work on this himself with all that he's been doing. So who could have formulated this plan and kept it from even the closest advisors to the President.

My guess ..... Dick Cheney!

Even before he started hanging out in undisclosed locations he was off the radar screen to a great extent. He has the organizational skills to come up with something like this. He is one smart cookie. Hmmmmmmmmm?

Thanks for nice photo of Ridge and Bush. Bush looks great, as usual, but Ridge looks stooped and thick. Reminds me of an old Russian politician. I really don't get it about him. Never have. I would think he's positioned to run for presidency in '08, hope he straightens up by then.

Nope, It was Tom Ridge and Dubya together, They studied all the problems Ridge had trying to organize these departments and they came to the conclusion that they had to be re-organized. They took all the arm chair quaterbacks opinions along with the proposals from Congress and worked them out together with working with FBI and CIA Directors and devised this plan. Just a month ago President Bush made a remark about the problems with the Coast Guard being under the control of the Dept. of Transportation.

I believe this plan was put together a few months ago, GWB just fed the press and congress some leaks about what they were planning and the problems they were having organizing these bloated agencies and waited until the PERFECT time to play his hand.

That's my opinion, based on the way they have done things since day one. CHESS not CHECKERS

I may have mis-read it and I don't recall the source but I thought I read on the Live Thread that actually this has been in the works since before 9/11 .... which would mean before Ridge entered the national scene. He was still Governor of PA until after 9/11. I'll see if I can go back and find what I read and see if I just took it wrong.

Actually there was a plan for an office of Homeland Defense, it was proposed by the Hart,(forgot the other name) commission on National Security, The report was finished in june of 2001 I believe. But it was for Congressional consumption and was asked for when Bubba was still in office by Republicans. Dubya just picked up the ball and ran with it.

But that report did not have any restructuring plans like what the President is proposing tonight. I personally believe this will be a hard deal to pull off. There is gonna be so many careerist screaming about having their legs cut out from under them that it will become a food fight.

I also think there is another plan in the works. Since they have been doing things in incremental steps, I believe this is just one of many re-organizing plans to come. Next I believe we will here about a major cut in the departments, just like when corperation merge, they always cut the pork out of the two companies when they merge.

This waill happen, When you think of all the staffers and the other jobs that overlap in these agencies there has to be dead weight. Dubya just didn't want to announce all the news tonight. wait a few weeks while the RATS and our Pure Idealogs try to claim he is "Growing the size of Government so much that it's fiscally irresponsible" and he will defend his plans for a few days and announce the next plan of cutting 3 or 4 thousand government jobs w/ a generous severance package. WATCH! ...:-)

Agree with you on that! In fact, Bush essentially said that tonight ...

"The staff of this new department will be largely drawn from the agencies we are combining. By ending duplication and overlap, we will spend less on overhead, and more on protecting America."

And when he phrases it that way, it's going to be hard for people to scream too loud about it ..... well, we know there are some who will scream but they won't get a lot of sympathy .... hehe!

Good night all, 6:00 Am has been coming way too early this week with all the late night hours beating back the arm chair Bush Bashing Reform Party Orphans who have been relentlessly trashing our President. Some of the ones who have been respectfully disagreeing with his policies have been jumped on a little bit too hard. But when I see words like "Socialist, Commie, and personal attacks on we who don't have their same pure ideology, I feel it's neccessary to fight back. So tonight it's time to get some sleep.

Cheers

MJY

**I'm a little behind in all the goings on at the Dose. So tell me what happened to you? why is everyone asking if you are feeling better. Or is it that accident you and your daughter had awhile back ago? I don't want to seem ignorant. **

It's just the 'residue' from the April 2 accident. Still have some head things going on (shut up grammie), and am going to PT for my back. I'm driving though...as long as I don't have a migraine. lol ...now that's scary.

**San Diego is the most beautiful city you could ever live in. When daughter and son-in-law were stationed at Camp Pendleton, we used to go down there all the time. The climate is perfect, and the scenery is gorgeous. Only problem is the (gulp!) cost of real estate. **

Most of our relatives are in Oceanside and further inland. San Diego *is* beautiful. Love it. Talked to my hubby this evening about the possibilities of relocating through his work. Always a possibility. But you're right about the real estate prices. While our home price in the Sac area has zoomed upwards I'm sure it's not enough to buy a decent little cottage in the surrounding area. Never know though.

**hsm, I'll never forget a few years ago, we were heading up the I-5 to Oregon to visit Mr. Inspectorette's family. Just north of Stockton, a double trailer tomato truck had overturned. Talk about your ultimate spaghetti sauce!!! Hubby was brushing crushed tomato out of the wheel wells for a week! **

See? What'd I tell you? Sac-a-tomatoes!

What's way cool is when the nut trucks tip a bit...then you can pretend to do squirrel things and pack up for the winter. And grapes...can't forget the valley grapes...from Lodi to Bakersfield I think.
