NORFOLK -- A small explosive device was found this morning inside a ventilation building near the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel.

Details about the device were not immediately available, but police said it was not large enough to have caused damage to the tunnel.

An employee of the Virginia Department of Transportation discovered the device between 8 and 8:30 a.m. today. A State Police bomb squad "rendered the device safe," a police spokesman said.

The bomb has been disarmed and does not pose any danger, police said.

More details will be reported as they become available.

No one was injured by the device and traffic through the tunnel was never stopped.

The investigation of the incident is continuing. Police said they have no suspects.

"How does one render a bomb, whether big or little, as safe?"

By disarming it. By making it so certain parts of the works must be reconstructed in a certain way before it can go off.

I got really pissed when they suggested that some random unaffiliated Islamic terrorist wannabe rent an apartment, pack it with explosives, set the timer and leave.

Oh that's right - it wasn't a "suggestion" it was a "warning".

Riiiiiigggggggggt. Just like they suggested that a suicide bomber could go into a mall and and...oh, wait. That was a warning, too.

They locked up a LEO w/ a bomb sniffing dog named Master Blaster down there a few years ago who was planting bombs himself and then finding them to make himself look like a hero. I don't think the dog was charged. The ex-cop could be on parole by now.

Yes, they both worship the same God. Tim called his God self, and Islam calls their God Allah but the mail goes to the same place.

"Remember back in June '93 when some of Osama's gang was stopped while plotting to blow up the Lincoln Tunnel in NYC during high traffic? It's certainly not a new thought to them."

Was it THAT long ago?...I thought it was '96 for some reason, but yes I remember it. That SEEMS like an obvious target, but it wouldn't cut off transportation to the max number of people possible.

After September 11th, we were trying to figure out where the terrorists could get the most (PLEASE PARDON THIS) bang for their initial investment...the best choices are obviously those which could cause the biggest pain in the neck for the largest number of people. There's the horror factor, of course, but what they hate most about us is our conveniences....if I were a terrorist, going for the absolute max damage and inconveniece, combined with horror, the Bay-Bridge tunnel would be a rather obvious target. Youve got location, you've got transportation, and you've got the ocean....do it at high tide, when the moon is full, and especially if there is a storm surge coming....of course, you would ALSO be going after one of the best protected pieces of real estate in the country. But if you were crazy and wanted to show you weren't afraid of the giant - naturally you'd have to outdo the Pentagon strike - the Bay-Bridge tunnel would be one of those golden-ring articles ; very tempting.

We have one advantage over the terrorists that our government isn't paying enough attention to : they DID miscalculate on 9-11. They miscalculated BAD. They are now forced to factor CONSEQUENCES into their target choice, as well as result - WITH less brain power than they had to count on BEFORE 9-11. They hadn't figured on all that.

"Fasten your seatbelts"?

I wonder if they plan on massive highway destruction.

20 goons with cars and exposives could cause a lot of trouble on freeways.

even while we know that muslims declared war on freedom and on us who fight for freedom
as i read all remarks i am prowed to be american
every one knowes we are in war and we have to battle death just for our freedom and freedom of our religion despite that kbowledge i am the first one mentioning that

reason no one else did mention that is not becuase its not hurting that thay or thier loved ones could be killed in a tragig death!!
its just that we all invest our pain and peace for our muslim brothers who are the real victims of those following thier religion

we have to show love to our muslim brothers who choose to come here to the free world since its very couragous

let me insert a copey of thier quoran

Abu Afak, a man of great age (reputedly 120 years) was killed because he lampooned Mohammad. The deed was done by Salem b. 'Omayr at the behest of the Prophet, who had asked, "Who will deal with this rascal for me?" The killing of such an old man moved a poetess, Asma b. Marwan, to compose disrespectful verses about the Prophet, and she too was assassina

What alarms me the most about Islam is its disposition to violence and use of violence as a standard of God's will.

`Umayr is a perfect example of this. Here is a Muslim man, a friend of Muhammad's, acting upon Muhammad's request and going into a woman's home under the cover of night. He comes upon the women, sleeping in her bed with her child, and murders her by plunging a sword through her body.

thay were not thought love thay studied sura :9 in quoran saying all infidels should be killed and still thay are here in the free world and runing away from islam nations teaching children to kill at age 10

ted.

June 24th, 1993.

I pulled that straight from personal memory, believe it or not (my memory being... spooky, at times :-)

There's only one God

If there was only one God there wouldn't be more than one religion. Unfortunately, man worships everything but God.

a bomb explosion twarted in Israel had been filled with cyanide

No, couldn't be that. After all, they found most of that 96 containers of cyanide that got stolen in Mexico...all that is, except for some 1300 pounds still missing. No problem, right? And they sure couldn't get that across our southern border, right? Little bomb here, little bomb there...no problem, right?

(end sarcasm)

That's one funky looking bridge / tunnel. Do people drive out into the middle of the water and then go into the tunnel? Any reason for this?
For the poster asking about the ventilation system and what problems could arise: think tunnel, no air, lots of carbon monoxide. Hopefully they have backup units or some mechanism to get people out of there w/o relying on their cars.
