Was it THAT long ago?...I thought it was '96 for some reason, but yes I remember it. That SEEMS like an obvious target, but it wouldn't cut off transportation to the max number of people possible.
After September 11th, we were trying to figure out where the terrorists could get the most (PLEASE PARDON THIS) bang for their initial investment...the best choices are obviously those which could cause the biggest pain in the neck for the largest number of people. There's the horror factor, of course, but what they hate most about us is our conveniences....if I were a terrorist, going for the absolute max damage and inconveniece, combined with horror, the Bay-Bridge tunnel would be a rather obvious target. Youve got location, you've got transportation, and you've got the ocean....do it at high tide, when the moon is full, and especially if there is a storm surge coming....of course, you would ALSO be going after one of the best protected pieces of real estate in the country. But if you were crazy and wanted to show you weren't afraid of the giant - naturally you'd have to outdo the Pentagon strike - the Bay-Bridge tunnel would be one of those golden-ring articles ; very tempting.
We have one advantage over the terrorists that our government isn't paying enough attention to : they DID miscalculate on 9-11. They miscalculated BAD. They are now forced to factor CONSEQUENCES into their target choice, as well as result - WITH less brain power than they had to count on BEFORE 9-11. They hadn't figured on all that.
June 24th, 1993.
I pulled that straight from personal memory, believe it or not (my memory being... spooky, at times :-)
