NORFOLK -- A small explosive device was found this morning inside a ventilation building near the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel.

Details about the device were not immediately available, but police said it was not large enough to have caused damage to the tunnel.

An employee of the Virginia Department of Transportation discovered the device between 8 and 8:30 a.m. today. A State Police bomb squad "rendered the device safe," a police spokesman said.

The bomb has been disarmed and does not pose any danger, police said.

More details will be reported as they become available.

No one was injured by the device and traffic through the tunnel was never stopped.

The investigation of the incident is continuing. Police said they have no suspects.

No suspects?

I could suggest some, but I will keep quiet and let the authorities do their job!

Not large enough to cause damage to the tunnel, but how about to the tunnel's ventilation system!? Couldn't that be a problem?

Someone tried to bring traffic to a screeching halt and kill hundreds. All in a day's work <sarcasm. Thank heaven the explosive device was discovered before we had horrendous loss of life.

My question. Did it contain any chemicals that would prove disasterous if distributed in the ventilation system? e.g. yesterday's news release that a bomb explosion twarted in Israel had been filled with cyanide?

One of the TV channels had a special on the building of the tunnel.
It would be a real economic loss .

Just the sort of thing that the group I have in mind would go after!

Someone who works in security at a major airport told me that they are watching "fuel farms" at major airports. Imagine what would happen if a bomb were allowed to go off in one of those fuel farms! Thank God for John Ashcroft for the sweep of airports ridding us of undocumented employees. I think we owe Ashcroft a debt of gratitude we can never repay. For victory & freedom!!!

"A State Police bomb squad "rendered the device safe," a police spokesman said."

What a ludicrious statement. How does one render a bomb, whether big or little, as safe? Because it didn't go off? Because they found it in time? Because.....

Oh never mind.

The Bay-Bridge tunnel has been worrying me a lot since 9-11. This news item suddenly reminds me of all those pre (AND post) 9-11 practice runs by the terrorists.

You know what really gets me? When the talking heads go on TV and tell us what the terrorists might do. Like say for instance, blow up a gas station. Gee, thanks. Do they think that we are the only ones watching TV?? ARGHHHHHH.

UPDATE

Pipe bomb found at bridge-tunnel

The Virginian-Pilot © June 6, 2002

NORFOLK -- A small explosive device described as a pipe bomb was found this morning inside a ventilation tunnel of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel.

Police said it was not large enough to have caused serious damage to the tunnel.

An employee of the Virginia Department of Transportation discovered the device between 8 and 8:30 a.m. today. A State Police bomb squad "rendered the device safe," a police spokesman said.

No one was injured by the device and traffic through the tunnel was never stopped.

Virginia Gov. Mark R. Warner issued a statement this afternoon, saying, "All indications are that the tunnels are safe."

The device was removed from the tunnel and detonated off site, the governor said. He said police are inspecting all other tunnels in Hampton Roads to ensure their safety.

"Virginia State Police and other agencies of state government will continue to be vigilant in protecting the safety of the people of the Commonwealth," Warner said.

The investigation of the incident is continuing. Police said they have no suspects.

The Bay-Bridge tunnel has been worrying me a lot since 9-11.

Man, you said it.

Remember back in June '93 when some of Osama's gang was stopped while plotting to blow up the Lincoln Tunnel in NYC during high traffic? It's certainly not a new thought to them.

Naw, it was Anne Coulter. She is "da bomb," after all. They rendered her safe by draping a burkha over her...
