You folks read to much into this election. I live in Missouri and have been viewing this Virginia election from afar. It appears that Early was a lackluster candidate who started in the hole to begin with. The Republicans have been in power for about 12 years and it is only natural for the voters to want a change. You folks in VA still hold the House of Delegates and you have a good chance to take back the govenor's office in four years. Cheer up and fight for what you believe in.

In what kind of forum should he have endorsed Earley? Attend rallies? Bush has better things to do right now! Where do you think those approval ratings would go if he was seen on the stump instead of spending all his time on the terrorist mess? By the way, do think his life being in danger might have been a little reason for him not to stump for Earley?

I sadly believe that the fall of our nation is a foregone conclusion. Please don't start composing the obituary -- we aren't dead yet.

Come on now...there are some logical (although incorrect) reasons for Bush to not have stumped for Earley and Schundler, but for you to suggest that he did so for personal safety reasons when HE THREW OUT THE FIRST PITCH AND EXPOSED HIMSELF TO OVER FIFTY THOUSAND PEOPLE is somewhat implausible (I would say laughable, but we are in a spirit of unity)

Well, Gilmore and company offered to help Earley with his campaign, but Earley declined their help. Bad move on his part. Doubtful. Gilmore's negatives are what helped to put Earley behind in the first place. Yes, we know the blame goes with the RINOs in the Senate, but the perception is that the budget impasse was all Gilmore's fault...

One positive about this...if we in Maryland somehow elect a Republican governor (and it could happen...Ehrlich will be strong if he runs and Kennedy-Townsend is an airhead with shaky support even on the Dem side)...then we'll know THE END IS NEAR!!
Think about it...VA with a Dem and MD with a Pubbie...OH THE HUMANITY!!!...

I wish Bush would have made just one support statement for Early. He did. He endorsed him back in the summer and sent a letter of support in the final days. But he didn't campaign for him.
I was one of the loudest calling for Bush to show up for Earley. Three weeks ago he could've turned it around.
No, it is not the President's fault that Earley lost, even though we'll hear McAuliffe and company spreading that swill tomorrow. But a vist by the President could've made a difference.
Yes, he has a war to run. And thanks to tonite's losses, he'll be running it with an approval rating well below his current 90%. It'll happen.

This Texan is not directly affected by this election. I was merely using the opportunity to take a jab at the Criminal Enterprise known as the Democratic Party.

Agree with you 100%, going to take about 4-6 more years before a majority see the light, then,
unfortunately, it will be way to late...
This Constitutional Republic is dead...

You folks read too much into this election. . . . Absolutely right. We expect too much of politics if we think that the election of this or that politician will save (or destroy) us.
Cheer up and fight for what you believe in.
Excellent advice.

I was raised and educated in Virginia too! (Of course - I was heavily "liberalized" by my educational institutions - so that's a major minus for VA too).Hey! Me too! But we're both here at free republic now, so that must say something!
ie. we have common sense...

You're right. Earley didn't set anybody's heart on fire. I've been all over VA in the last 2 months and from the mountains to the Tidewater everybody was talking about Warner.
To: Bombard
Thanks,Bombard, for the kind words (from an unhappy Virginian upon learning about Warner's victory). Hope to God the GOPs in the VA GenAss'y make it a hollow victory indeed.I hope they slam every crummy proposal he puts forward, including tax hikes,of course, and just make him WISH he'd never bought the governorship.Hope we can survive his tenure and emerge intact.

Glad to know I'm not alone in seeing a less than cheery long-term outlook. Thanks for speaking up. :)

I sadly believe that the fall of our nation is a foregone conclusion.I wouldn't be so pessimistic.
It's hard to reconcile the majority of the populations of Virginia and New Jersey voting to elect Governors from the pervert party, but the fact is that these losses represent a failure by the national GOP to aggressively pursue these offices.
The GOP is concentrating on the survival of the USA, politics can wait until next year. The jackass party is concentrating on the survival of the jackass party
The northeast has been lost for a long time, anybody who still lives there deserves what they get.
In Virginia, perhaps Earley didn't appeal to women like Warner did.
Policy is seldom the determining factor when women vote.
We will get them next time.

In Virginia, perhaps Earley didn't appeal to women like Warner did. You wouldn't say that if you saw them up close. Warner appealed to women because of traditional "women's issues" - he got the sucker moms, just like Bill Clinton did.
This race will not be a determining factor in the long run in 2002, but it will be pointed to over and over as a rejection of the GOP (as well as the President's) domestic agenda. McAuliffe has already started saying that.
We know better, but the sheeple don't.

I love how everyone assumes Bush will expose himself in public to the nut jobs that are out there in the country, who would love to take a shot at him. The point is Bush didn't even try. He was "brave" enough to go to Yankee Stadium, he can't sit in the oval office and do ONE freaking tv commercial for the two candidates?
He didn't do it because, once again, he wanted to be bipartisan. He wanted to show how nice and fair and "Christian" he is. In reality he's acting like a naive wimp and a big fat LOSER in the literal and figurative senses of the word.
You will never win by ass kissing and laying down and pretending to be a gentleman with liberals! How is it that the (almost) entire Free Republic membership realizes this and he doesn't?
He's doing this with Russia too... and BTW, if I EVER hear him call islam a "peaceful religion" again I am going to vomit blood!
COMPASSIONATE CONSERVATISM IS FOR LOSERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"The biggest problem with this Warner character is that he is a corporatist - historically a problem that cost this nation $350,000,000,000 in an earlier time as well as hundreds of thousands of lives."Oh. Gee. Wowie. A "lesson". Can't wait.
OK, please............for the cheap seats: Define "corporatist". The ol' Webster's Seventh Collegiate fails.
While you're at it, let's all learn together about the origin of those Really Really Big Numbers you mention, k?
To: Dane
Check out Newark-Patterson very heavy Democratic concentration -- let the welfare roll continue -- it's these areas that cost the Republican Party in NJ.
