DODGEVILLE, Wis. โ The Southwestern Wisconsin Community Action Program will close its nine preschool Head Start classrooms on Monday as the federal government shutdown stretches into its fourth week.
The closure affects 145 preschool-aged children in Iowa, Lafayette, Grant, Green and Richland counties. The Head Start program serves low-income families by providing access to childcare and food services.
SWCAP will lose $3 million in federal funding when the grant supporting the program is not renewed Nov. 1, due to the shutdown. Without a federal budget, the government cannot fund the grant.
"I was one of these kids, as a kid. And so, I want to make that difference. I want to be the person that I needed at that age," said Becky Logue, who has taught preschool for Head Start in Boscobel for the past five years.
Logue learned that the 19 children in her classroom would not return next week.
"They don't all have good living conditions at home, so who knows what's can happen," she said.
Head Start Director Tawny Hardyman expressed concern about the broader impact on families already struggling financially.
"Many of those families also qualify for SNAP benefits, which are now also cut. We really, really worry about children having food at home." Hardyman said.
The program closure will furlough 34 staff members, including Logue, who supports six children at home.
"I personally have six kids at home. My husband does work, but it's not enough to feed six kids and pay the bills. So I mean, we will be able to get unemployment, but that doesn't feed a family, you know?" Logue said.
Even if the government shutdown ends soon, staff say it could take weeks to get the assistance approved and programs running again.
SWCAP is one of 134 Head Start programs nationwide and one of two in Wisconsin directly affected by the shutdown.

Ink State level support.
Oh no....You mean I’ll have to watch my own kids everyday. I like to sleep till noon.
All I can say is that I've never seen such a coven of greedy self interested Karens in my lifetime.
Tens of millions of Americans never attended headstart until freeloaders demanded that the government babysit their kids while they go shopping. Didn’t hurt me any that I am not a “headstart” graduate and I’ve never been confused with a severe case of sexual identity due to being groomed at “headstart” to be a sexual pervert.
Nine southwestern Wisconsin Head Start classrooms to close due to government shutdown prolonged by the DEMOCRATS refusing to vote to pass the relief.
Fixed urinalist headline.
That’s not true, they love them. They use them as emotional human shields to push their socialist agendas.
Head Start doesn’t work-proven. Sounds like a baby sitting op for po’ folk.
Does Head Start actually work? If public school is a bad design, Head Start seems like a wart attached to the problem.
“Politicians have traditionally hidden behind three things, The Flag, the bible and children. No child left behind!, no child left behind. Oh really? It wasn’t long ago you were talking about giving children a head start. Head Start-Left Behind. Someone’s losing ground here.” - George Carlin
I heard reports yesterday that some Scottsdale residents are loosing their jobs due to them working for non-profits.
Sounds like they might be owners of the non-profit who lost their USAID funding as most NP workers couldn’t afford to live in these communities.
Anyone who qualifies for SNAP and Headstart assuredly is on the dole for a handful of other government handouts too. They arenโt starving.

Don’t just about all school aged kids get free breakfast and lunch at school anyhow?
$3,000,000 grant for 145 pre-school children? What a great deal, we are only spending $20,690 per student. No reason this program shouldn’t be expanded to cover ALL the children. What a great return on our investment for the future / SARC
Another useless taxpayer-funded program.
Children, and everyone, should glory in their suffering as it is a necessary step towards the new world order.
Becky, call (202) 224-6542 and complain to Chucky!
That’s the Driftless area. Keep the little basttards away from the trout streams while they are playing hooky!๐

$690 per student and $20,000 for administration/indirect costs.
