Republicans in Congress Shift to Backing Ukraine, Matching Trump
New york times ^ | July 15th 2025 | Robert Jimison

Less than two years ago, House Republicans were so livid about the idea of continuing to aid Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression that they deposed their own speaker, Kevin McCarthy, in part to protest what they said was a “secret side deal” he had made to do so.

Months later, Speaker Mike Johnson risked his own job to push through a funding package for Ukraine, with the majority of his members voting “no.”

But now, more than three years into the war, many Republicans in Congress who have railed consistently against sending more money and weapons to Ukraine and clamored to end American involvement in the war are rushing to shift their stance, following the lead of President Trump.

... Representative Derrick Van Orden, Republican of Wisconsin, last spring savaged the Biden administration for failing to have a plan for further aid to Ukraine, proclaiming, “We must stop entering into endless wars.” On Monday, he endorsed Mr. Trump’s announcement of more help.

“I explicitly trust Donald Trump,” he said in an interview. “I call him the peacemaker in chief. He knows what he’s doing, and I trust him.”

..Representative Troy Nehls, Republican of Texas, is part of the hard-right faction in the House that argued for withholding support for Ukraine over concerns about funding for security at the U.S.-Mexico border. Now, he supports helping Ukraine,

..Senator Rick Scott, a Florida Republican who once vehemently opposed U.S. aid to Ukraine, also spoke favorably about Mr. Trump’s plan. “He’s going to do everything he can to get peace, and I hope Putin takes him seriously,” Mr. Scott said of the plan, adding: “I think President Trump clearly doesn’t want to be in wars. He hates war.”

For an economic argument against war, I refer y’all to go to YouTube slice of a Star Trek Deep Space Nine episode where a character named Quark is discussing the economics of peace.

This is some real bizarro world BS.
I can’t stand lindsey graham and think he’s crazy and corrupt, rejection of his kind was a big reason for supporting Trump.

But now Trump appears to have completely embraced his idiotic approach and mentality.

God save us from Lindsey Graham

You calling President Trump as idiotic because he is pushing for peace?

The road to peace is for Ukraine to have safety from further Muscowite attempts to grab territory .

Congratulations. When a pooper’s only response to your counterpoint is to call you an idiot, post a mocking meme, or change the subject, you have won that argument. It doesn’t stop them from continuing to do it, but it helps us all understand them better.

At some point on all of these key issues President Trump is going to have to step up and demonstrate that his course of action is markedly different than what we saw with his retarded predecessor.

FTA——Senator Rick Scott, a Florida Republican who once vehemently opposed U.S. aid to Ukraine, also spoke favorably about Mr. Trump’s plan. “He’s going to do everything he can to get peace, and I hope Putin takes him seriously,” Mr. Scott said of the plan, adding: “I think President Trump clearly doesn’t want to be in wars. Scott seems to be saying US arms to Ukraine are intended to pressure Putin?

“. . . shift to backing Ukraine. . .” is the sloppy characterization that we should expect from media. So many of those “opposed” in the past actually opposed the shoveling of money without conditions.

President Trump is not backing Ukraine.

President Trump is ending US support for the war, the war in Ukraine while at the same time transferring responsibility for keeping the war rolling to the Europeans .

The US is effectively Europeanizing the war in Ukraine and the US will no longer be giving the Ukraine anything for free and we are cutting back on selling them anything directly .

Weapons will be supplied to Ukraine by the EU from their stocks. These weapons stocks will be purchased from the US because the EU can't produce the necessary weapons themselves

More importantly, the NATO countries and China have been encouraging Ukraine to sabotage President Trumps peace initiatives to keep the war rolling.

All of President Trumps new Ukraine policies are targeted as much ( if not more) to put pressure on the EU and China to force Zelensky to make concessions as much as they are to put pressure on Putin to do the same .

The US will now sell weapons to NATO countries at our premium foreign sales weapons price structure and they can pay for the weapons supply to Ukraine.

The Euro leaders are wonderful at bold talk and media “messaging war campaigns” but they are terrible at action and follow through.

If EU is footing the war financing bills the Ukraine is in big trouble because the big talking EU pols are cheap when it comes to aid and their countries are broke and can't afford to pay.

And President Trumps much maligned “ minerals deal” ( which is more of a deal to prevent European carpet bagger countries from looting Ukraine) put serious constraints on Zelensky’s ability to mortgage Ukraine's future by pledging Ukraines assets to fund his war.

And Trump has totally flipped the script on Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthals Russian sanctions scheme. The secondary sanctions target China and the EU with the hardest pains so as to stop them from encouraging Zelensky to “ stand strong” and refuse to make needed concessions to get a peace deal to stop the fighting

Forget the media hype.

Trumps new policy on Ukraine is his old policy on steroids and he has crushed his opposition - foreign and domestic
